Chapter 47
Her Dad’s Best Friend
My stomach threatens to revolt, but I put a foot on his back. Iacopo reaches for the guyâs throat.
âNo pulse.â Iacopo leans in and puts his ear next to the guyâs mouth. âNo breath. Heâs done.â
I really think Iâm going to throw up right now. Sure, I knew that my dad and Uncle Iacopo didnât have lily-white hands, but nobody had ever been killed in front of me before.
âIâm going to turn on the lights now.â Iacopo is walking over to the door.
And then the room is full of eye-searing light.
âUgh!â Itâs like dawn but worse.
âSorry.â Even though Iacopo doesnât seem particularly repentant, I let it slide.
Thereâs a guy with light brown skin under me. His head is twisted at an unnatural angle.
âI snapped his neck,â Iacopo says when he sees me staring. âIt was the best I could do on short notice. If Iâd had a few seconds, I would have grabbed my gun. Thank you for warning me.â
I donât know what to say. Iâve apparently just saved Iacopoâs life, even though all I wanted to do was talk. And Iâve just watched a man killed in front of me.
âHey,â Iacopo says very softly. His eyes are on my face. âWeâre going to walk down to the kitchen. Youâre going to drink something.â
He puts his arm around me, his hand resting on my waist. And then weâre going downstairs to the kitchen. Once weâre there, he pulls open the refrigerator door and brings out a big jug of orange juice.
âYou need some sugar for the shock,â he says. He pours us two glasses of juice. I drink mine even though it tastes too sour. The unpleasant tartness of the juice tells me that I really am awake. I pinch my wrist.
âYouâre awake,â Iacopo says.
I stare at the small mark on my skin thatâs rapidly fading. I really just watched Iacopo murder someone. Yes, that someone was an assassin, but holy shit.
Her Dadâs Best Friend ï¤Chapter 46 Chapter Eleven Late Night Iacopo âWho was that?â Kellyâs hands are still shaking, even after Iâve given her orange juice.
I sigh. âDid you know that Iâm going through a custody dispute?â
She nods. âMy dad hated your ex-wife. He said that even though she was a mafia princess, she only married you for the alliance and didnât love you.â
âSuccinct,â I say.
âI remember when your daughter was born,â Kelly says, her voice wistful. âShe was so small. How old is she now?â
âA year. Sheâs walking, not very steadily, and she babbles.â Talking about my daughter hurts. Sheâs a reminder of the failure of my first marriage, but I wouldnât trade Lucia for anything.
âWhat does your baby have to do with an assassin in your bedroom?â
âI have a lot of enemies,â I say.
âAnd?â
âAriana is still a part of my life.â
âYou think that your ex-wife sent someone to kill you? Thatâs crazy. No way.â
