Chapter 52
Her Dad’s Best Friend
Then I hear a scream.
Kellyâs inside. That window is the second-floor sitting room where sheâs been working.
Iâm running inside of a burning house. Thereâs no way that we can keep this away from the fire service. I have to get Kelly out.
Iâm running up the stairs. Kellyâs stumbling around in a smoky hallway.
âKelly!â
I pull her away from the fire. Sheâs coughing really hard. If Iâd thought about it, I wouldâve brought in some kind of mask. I take off my shirt, tear it into two pieces, and put one piece over her face. She gets the idea and holds it over her nose and mouth. I cover my nose and mouth, too. Itâs hard to see in here.
Thereâs a lot of smoke. I think that thereâs only fire in one room. Iâm yanking her down the stairs right now. When she stumbles, I throw her over my shoulder in a firemanâs carry. Sheâs coughing really hard, despite the makeshift mask.
Then weâre coming outside into the fresh, clean air. I can hear the wail of sirens.
I put her down on the grass outside.
âKelly.â
Sheâs coughing uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face. I canât believe that I put in her in danger. Sheâs far too young to die. Ariana doesnât care about the death toll as she takes over our operations.
I realize in this moment that Kelly is Arianaâs opposite. Kelly would never try to take over my organization.
âIâm sorry,â I whisper so quietly that I donât think she can hear it. A little louder, I say, âWeâll get you to the hospital as soon as we can.â
Then the sirens are louder than ever. A fire truck and ambulance are rolling up. The firemen are running like crazy.
âIs there anybody in there?â
âNobody.â
The firemen are pulling the firehose out. Iâm sitting on the ground next to Kelly as I watch them put out the fire.

âWhat the fuck are the pigs doing here?â
âThey come out for every fire call. Could be arson.â Kellyâs voice is very thin and weak. I think that the smoke damaged her voice.
I donât recognize the men coming out of the police cruiser. A chill runs down my spine. These men donât look like policemen. Theyâre feds.
âIacopo Genovese?â
They have on FBI windbreakers.
âHow can I help you?â I say as if my house isnât literally burning beside me.
âWeâre worried about the fire in your house. Might be arson. Mind if we take a look around?â
âYou guys donât look like arson investigators.â
âWe have a diverse skill set.â
I realize what Ar iana did. She doesnât mind taking down the Genovese family by putting me in jail. Now that they can get into my house, she thinks that they can access my records.
Iâm not an idiot. Theyâre not at home.
