Chapter 63
Her Dad’s Best Friend
I want Iacopo to save me. We still have to talk, but I need him more than ever.
Chapter Twenty-Four Car Window Kelly I hear shouting. Then someoneâs bursting in my door. Itâs the woman from before, but sheâs not pretending to be gentle this time.
âCome with me.â
She takes my wrist in her hand and drags me forward.
âWhere are we going?â
She doesnât answer me. I can hear gunshots. My heart starts to freak out.
âWhere are you taking me?â
She is running now. Iâm stumbling behind her. Weâre in a dark tunnel. Suddenly weâre next to a car.
âGet in.â
I donât.â
âGet in the car, or so help me, I will make you bleed.â
I donât want to get in the car. Itâs the first rule of being kidnapped. Once youâre in the car, itâs game over.
She pulls a gun out. She must have had it in a holster. I didnât see it.
âGet in the fucking car or Iâll kill you right now.â
âYou canât kill me,â I protest.
âI can maim you for life. How do you like having two kneecaps? Would you like only one of them to be intact? It wouldnât kill you.â

She drives like a crazy woman. Weâre flying like a bat out of hell as we go far away from wherever they were holding me.
I can see her sweating even though itâs not that hot. âYou can leave me here,â I offer as we pass a park. âI wonât tell them anything.â
âShut up,â she says. Sheâs all alone in the car with me.
âAnd donât get any bright ideas,â she warns. âI may not have taken the time to secure you, but Iâm not useless. Tie your wrists together. There are zip ties in the glove compartment. Do it.â
I donât want to tie my wrists together.
âNow.â
I open the glove compartment. There are zip ties in there. I put them around my wrists and pull them closed.
âGood.â
Sheâs driving more slowly now. I think that she has a destination in mind. I shut up and try to remember as much as I can about the surrounding area.
Maybe Iâll be able to describe it later.
Weâre at the edge of a desert now. She drives forward. Sheâs visibly relaxed now, but Iâm getting scared. Weâre not in the city anymore.
