Chapter 65
Her Dad’s Best Friend
âYes, but we took a picture of Kelly entering a room.â
I look at the grainy surveillance photo. âHer hands are tied.â
âYes, they are.â
âHow did you find her?â
âStroke of luck. The car was parked illegally, so a parking violation ticket was issued.â
âCould they really be that stupid? Or is it a trap?â
âOnly one way to find out, sir.â
Weâre getting into a car. I donât trust myself to drive right now. My men are driving me towards that small desert town as fast as we can go.
Hold on. Iâm coming for you.
Chapter Twenty-Six Motel Room Kelly The smell of the motel room is horrible. It smells like decaying trash. Rotting food has a sort of sweet smell. The motel room smells like itâs rotting, but without the sweetness.
âEat,â she barks at me. Thereâs an open bag of potato chips in front of me. I donât touch it. I donât even know her name. She just yanked me into the motel room closest to the car and closed the curtains. After cutting off my zip tie, she cuffed one of my hands to the headboard.
âIâm not hungry.â I canât eat in this place. Itâs filthy. I feel like vomiting. Iâm totally miserable and my stomach feels like itâs digesting itself.
âYou have to eat.â I can hear the desperation in her voice.
âWhy do you even care?â
âI donât.â But thereâs a little tremble in her voice. Sheâs scared of something. I just donât know what.

âIâm not holding you for myself,â she snarls at me. She takes a step towards me that makes me think sheâs going to claw at my face.
âWhy am I here? Is it Ariana?â
She just shakes her head. âThe less you know, the better.â
âYour boss isnât Ariana, is it? It has to be someone else.â
âShut up.â She runs her hands through her hair so that it sticks up a little bit. She paces around the room. She keeps looking at the phone, as if she really wants to make a call but knows that she shouldnât.
âWhy donât you call whoever it is youâre worried about?â
âNot secured.â
She sits down on the bed. Sheâs staring out the window, drumming her fingers on the mattress.
âYou left behind all your stuff when we ran, didnât you?â I smile for the first time in a long time.
Good news. Weâre in the middle of nowhere and she has no backup.
âStop smiling. I still have a gun, so donât even think about running.â
