Chapter 96
Her Dad’s Best Friend
âYou know how you proposed to me downstairs? Youâd become Dannyâs stepmother and my wife?â
âYeah.â My heart starts beating a little faster. âBut you didnât seem like you were into it.â
He rubs his eyes. âThings change. I just called your dad.â
âAnd?â
âHeâs letting us do it.â
My little heart feels like a hummingbirdâs right now.
âNo shit?â I ask.
âYeah,â he says. âIâm going to ask you to marry me.â
My heart soars. I feel like Iâm jumping over a rainbow right now.
Right there, in my little bedroom and with his son asleep upstairs, Jeff sinks to one knee.
âElia, I promise to take care of you for as long as weâre married. Iâll make sure that youâre in a good position when you leave. Iâll pay for your years of college, as many as you want. Will you marry me?â He fishes a ring box out of his pocket and opens it. Itâs a small diamond in a fabulous setting.
I always thought that I would get married when I was madly in love. Maybe Iâm young, but I always believed in the forever kind of love, the sort when the prince goes hunting for you and heals you with true loveâs kiss.
What heâs offering is temporary. Itâs only to save his son. Oh, I know that sleeping with him has something to do with it, even if my dad doesnât. This proposal isnât because heâs overwhelmed by love for me. Heâs just doing it for the sake of expediency.
I donât care. I will take what heâs offering before itâs gone.
âYes.â
He takes the ring out of the box and slides it on my finger. The band fits me perfectly.
âHow did you even get this? Did you just run to the jewelry store?â I look at the clock. Thereâs no way he couldâve called my dad and driven to the nearest jewelry store. Theyâre probably closed right now anyway.
Her Dadâs Best Friend âItâs my grandmotherâs ring.â
I swallow hard. âIâve never seen it before.â
He sighs and rises. He sits on the bed. âWith my first wife, she dragged me to a diamond dealer and had a custom design so that it suited her personality. My mother was kind of devastated, actually.â
I swallow even harder. âSo youâre giving me something that youâve never given anyone else?â My stupid little heart is flying like an eagle, soaring where the air is thin, even though I know that this engagement is not real. The marriage will end. I canât get my hopes up.
âYup.â He looks down at the ring on my hand. âI remember the smell of lemon,â he tells me. âShe loved lemon bars and would bake them all the time.
Sheâd serve them with tea, but I always got 90% milk and 10% tea. Sheâd like you. Sheâd be happy to have you as Dannyâs stepmother.â
Iâm trying not to cry. It shouldnât feel this real, but it does. Heâs just given me his grandmotherâs ring.
âI promise to take care of it for as long as I wear it.â
âI know you will,â he says. âI know.â
When he leans in for a kiss, itâs so gentle and tender that my entire body melts as quickly as a popsicle on a hot July day. Warmth is spreading through my whole body. He kisses my neck and bites me hard enough to make my back arch.
Not long ago, I was messing around on my computer. Now my clothes are coming off and heâs yanking open his pants, the buckle clinking as it slides to the floor.
âI have to make you mine.â
His big hand is sitting between my thighs and pets my clit.
âYouâre wet,â he observes.
