: Chapter 20
The Stopover (The Miles High Club Book 1)
Jameson
I walk into the apartment right at seven to the delectable aroma of gourmet food cooking. I smile, drop my laptop bag, and make my way to the kitchen to find Emily dancing with her back to me as she cooks. I stand at the doorway and watch her for a moment. Sheâs wearing a black skirt and a white shirt, her long dark hair is in a ponytail, and her naturally beautiful face is glowing.
A warm feeling of comfort runs through me at her obvious happiness.
All is right in my world when sheâs here.
This is the weirdest thing Iâve ever experienced. I donât want to be anywhere but here with her. From three oâclock every afternoon I start to watch the clock, waiting for the time I get to come home.
I watch as she picks up her wineglass and sips it; her burgundy lipstick marks the glass in a perfect lip shape, and I smileâeven her lipstick on the glass does things to me.
I would never want to wash it again; Iâm like a starstruck schoolboy.
Her behind moves sexily to the beat, and I watch her, transfixed by the beautiful woman in my kitchen. She turns and catches sight of me and smiles sexily. âHello.â
She comes to me, and I wrap her in my arms.
âHowâs my man?â she asks as she kisses me softly.
âGood now that Iâm home.â
Our lips touch again and again, and I sit her up on the counter and stand between her legs as we kiss.
âAre we having an entrée before our meal, Mr. Miles?â she breathes against my lips.
I unzip my fly. âLooks like it.â
Itâs Thursday and crazy around here. We are preparing reports for our board meetings tomorrow. It feels good to be back at it without the added pressure of all the other shit thatâs been going on around here. Tristan and I are at my desk, discussing the new advertising budget we have set, when thereâs a knock on my door.
âCome in,â I call. The door opens, and a familiar face comes into view. My face falls, and I stand immediately. âClaudia.â
Tristanâs eyes widen, and he looks to me as he stands. âHi, Claud.â He rushes to her and kisses her on the cheek. âHow are you?â he asks.
She forces a smile. âGood, thank you . . . and you?â
âGreat.â Tristanâs eyes meet mine across the room. âI have some things to do. See you later, Claud.â
âGoodbye.â Her smile fades, and her nervous eyes come to me. âHello, Jameson.â
âHello.â I walk around and kiss her on the cheek; her familiar perfume permeates around me, and I frown at the memories it evokes. âHow are you?â I ask.
She clutches her purse. âIâve resigned from Vogue. Iâm coming home to New York.â
I stare at her, lost for words.
âIâve missed you too much, Jameson. I canât live without you,â she whispers.
My heart drops. âClaud, no . . .â
Her eyes fill with tears. âYou said it was distance.â
Empathy fills me. I canât stand seeing her upset, and I take her into my arms.
âItâs not the distance anymore,â I murmur into her hair. The door opens, and Emily bounces in. Her face falls, and she stops on the spot when she sees Claudia in my arms.
âOh . . . Iâmââ
âCome in, Emily,â I say.
Claudia pulls out of my arms, and her crazy eyes go to Emily.
âClaudia, this is Emily . . . my girlfriend,â I introduce them.
Emilyâs eyes flick between us, and then she holds out her hand. âHello, Claudia. Nice to meet you.â She smiles kindly.
Claudia shakes her hand. âHello.â She turns her attention back to me.
Emily looks between us again. âIâll give you some privacy.â
âThank you,â I whisper as my eyes stay fixed firmly on Claudia. I hate hurting her.
âGoodbye,â Emily says. âNice to meet you.â
Claudiaâs eyes fill with tears anew as the door quietly clicks closed. âDoes she even know who I am?â she whispers.
âYes.â
âAnd she found me in your arms and is happy to leave you here with me?â she mutters sarcastically.
My eyes hold hers, annoyed that she thinks Emily has reason to be insecure. âShe knows where my heart lies.â
Claudiaâs eyes fill with tears, and I internally kick myself for being an ass. âIâm coming home to New York, Jameson. We can get back together.â
âNo, we canât.â
Her eyes search mine.
âIâm marrying her, Claud.â
âDonât say that,â she whispers. âSheâs just easy for you because sheâs no challenge.â
âYouâre wrong; sheâs the love of my life.â
She clenches her jaw in anger. âYou bastard.â
âIâm sorry.â I step back from her. âBut thereâs no other way to put it.â
Her anger erupts. âSo . . . what happens when I see you out?â she snaps.
âYou say hello.â
âDo you think you can replace me so easily?â she stammers.
I stare at her, sad that sheâs hurting.
âI love you, Jameson. Come back to me,â she pleads as she takes my hand in hers.
âYou need to go, Claud.â
âYouâre kicking me out?â she shrieks.
âNo. Iâm asking you to leave.â
âThatâs the same thing.â
I exhale heavily; this isnât going to end well. I need to end it before an all-out war begins. I kiss her on the forehead and walk to the door and open it. âGoodbye, Claudia.â
She angrily swipes the tears from her eyes and storms past me. I close the door and stare at the carpet for a moment as I feel the tectonic plates move another notch closer to goal. I go back to my desk and dial Emilyâs number.
âHi,â she answers.
âHi.â
âI came up to see if you wanted to go out to lunch today.â
I smile softly. I love this womanânot an inch of insecurity.
âI do. Meet you in the foyer at one.â
Emily
Itâs just around three in the afternoon.
I turn to Aaron. âWish that damn cheesecake Uber would show up about now.â
âHa, right?â he mutters.
âIâll go make the coffees.â I stand and make my way to the kitchen. I make Aaronâs and then Mollyâs, and then as Iâm making mine, Jake walks into the kitchen.
âHi, Emily.â
âOh, hi.â I stir the coffee.
âHoly shit, get ready for a media storm tomorrow.â
âWhy?â
He looks around and leans in as if not wanting anyone to hear what he has to say. âYou should see what Ferrara is putting to print tomorrow.â
âWhat?â I frown.
âYou canât tell anyone,â he whispers.
âI wouldnât.â
âThey have new dirt on Jameson Miles. The shit is about to hit the fan.â
My eyes widen. âWhat? How do you know?â
âOur insider in their office has just called it through.â
âWhat is it?â
He looks around. âApparentlyââ
Someone else walks into the kitchen, and we both step back from each other guiltily. The guy begins to make idle chitchat with Jake, and if I wait around, it will be too obvious that I am waiting to talk to him alone. Shit, Iâll come back in a minute.
I make my way back to my desk with my heart in my throat. What dirt do they have on Jay?
Oh hell, I need to find out what it is.
I keep an eye on the kitchen, and as soon as I see Jake go back to his desk, I make my way over to him, and his eyes light up when he sees me. âHi.â
âMeet me in the photocopy room, please?â I whisper.
âSure.â
I walk in and wait, and moments later he follows me in.
âWhat the hell is going on?â I whisper.
âI canât tell you here; itâs too risky,â he says as he looks around.
âJust tell me,â I almost beg.
âMeet me after work, and Iâll tell you everything over a quick drink.â
I stare at him. âWhat time?â
âSix thirty?â
I think for a moment. That would still give me time to go to Tristan if I need to. âJust tell me now.â
âNo way. Iâll tell you it all tonight; itâs too in depth.â
Damn it, I donât want to meet this idiot, but if I donât, how would I know what Ferrara is up to? If I find out, then maybe we can get an injunction and stop the story from going to print.
âOkay, fine. Where?â
âHarryâs Bar, six thirty.â
âOkay, see you there.â
I go back to my desk and look around guiltily. My heart rate is going through the roof. What dirt do they have on Jameson?
Oh no, my poor man.
Molly and Aaron are both not at their desks, and I know I have to ring Jay and let him know Iâm going to be late when they canât hear me lie and use them as my alibi.
I nervously dial his number.
âHi,â his sexy voice purrs down the phone.
âHi.â I begin to break into a sweat as I prepare to lie. âIâm going to go out to dinner with Molly and Aaron tonight.â I screw up my face. âAaron is a bit down, and weâre going to try and cheer him up.â
âOh.â He seems surprised.
âIs that okay?â I reply nervously.
âOf course it is.â
âIâll come over as soon as I finish, and it wonât be late.â
âOkay, babe.â
âWhat will you eat?â I frown. I hate that I wonât be cooking for him. Looking after Jameson has become my favorite thing.
âIâll find something; donât worry about me.â
âOh, okay.â I fall silent, feeling guilty.
As if sensing my inner turmoil, he asks, âIs everything all right, Emily?â
âYes, of course. I love you. See you tonight.â I hang up in a rush before I confess my lie.
Six thirty on the dot I walk into Harryâs Bar. Iâve been here before with Aaron and Molly, so I know where it is.
Jake is in the back corner, and he waves happily when he sees me.
I smile awkwardly and make my way over to the table. A glass of wine sits there waiting for me.
âHi.â I sit down opposite him.
âHi. You look beautiful.â He smiles as he looks me up and down. I frown. I went home and showered and changed quickly. I hope he doesnât think it was for him. I changed for Jay for when I see him later.
âYou ordered me a drink?â I ask.
âYes.â He smiles warmly. âI hope you like itâcab sav.â
âThanks.â I sip it. âWhatâs the story about Jameson?â
He opens the menu. âShould we get something to eat?â
âIâm really not hungry,â I reply. I just want to get the information and get the hell out of here.
He keeps reading the menu. âI might get some wedges.â
âTell me what you know,â I ask again.
âWell, itâs a tangled web.â
I sip my wine as I watch him. Iâm so nervous about what heâs about to tell me that I feel sick.
âApparently there is a huge story coming out tomorrow.â
I sip my wine. âAbout?â
âWell . . .â He pauses. âI think Iâm going to get the wedges; do you want wedges?â
âFine, get the wedges,â I snap.
He keeps looking at the menu, and Iâm about to explode. Pick some food, you damn fool. âIâll get the wedges,â I say as I stand in a rush. âIs that it? Is that all you want?â
âUh-huh.â
I march to the counter. âCan I have a bowl of wedges and a trio of dipping sauces, please?â
I exhale heavily as I try to calm myself down. Just be calm.
âEmily.â I hear a voice behind me.
âIs that all?â the waiter asks me.
âYes, please.â I smile as I turn back toward the voice that just called me.
Jake grabs my hand and kisses me on the lips.
I step back, shocked. âWhat are you doing?â
âKissing you.â He smiles as he leans in to kiss me again.
I jump back and out of his reach. âWhat the hell, Jake? I donât like you like that,â I snap as I wipe my mouth.
âI thought that since we were on a date . . .â
âWhat?â I stammer, horrified. âI came here to find out about Jameson.â
He smiles a broad, cheeky smile and then winks.
I glare at him. âThereâs no breaking story, is there?â
He shrugs. âWe could make the story about the wild night we spend together.â
âYouâre a fucking idiot,â I snap. âI am not interested in you.â
âOh, but you should be.â He grabs my hand again, and I push him hard in the chest.
âStop it.â
âThat will be twenty-two dollars,â the poor waiter says as he looks between us.
âIâm not paying for this imbecileâs wedges,â I snap. âGoodbye, Jake,â I say as I storm toward the door.
âEmily . . . come on. We would be great together,â he calls.
I stumble out of the bar, furious, as steam shoots from my ears. Iâve been stressed out all day, and for what?
Stupid Jakeâs lie to get me on my own.
The guyâs a fucking sleazebag. And now I canât even go home because I lied to Jay about where I am.
I walk into a Thai restaurant, and the waiter approaches me.
âCan I have a table for one, please?â I ask sadly. Iâll just eat dinner alone and then go home to my man.
I canât believe I fell for that trick. What an asshole.
At least thereâs no story.
Jameson
I bend and kiss Emily on the forehead in the dark. Sheâs still sleeping. âIâm going, babe.â
âHmm.â She wraps her arms around me and pulls me down on top of her. âNo, donât go. Play hooky today.â
I smile in her arms. âI canât; I have a meeting this morning.â I sigh. I have so much damage control to do. Even though the immediate story-leak threat has come to an end, this battle with Ferrara is nowhere near over. If anything, I feel itâs about to come to a head. âTwo days until we go away,â I remind her.
She smiles with her eyes closed. âTwo days is too long, Mr. Miles. One of these days Iâm going to kidnap you.â
We kiss softly, again and again, and I can feel my arousal grow between my legs. I pull back from her. âIâve got to go,â I whisper into her hair. âIf I stay here, Iâm going to fuck you and be late.â
âGood.â She smirks. âFuck me and be late.â
I chuckle against her lips, and with one long, last, lingering kiss, I get up and stare at her lying in my bed, which is all messed up. She smiles up at me, and my heart constricts. Nothing has ever looked so perfect . . . or felt so right. Even with all this shit going on, Emily instills in me a sense of calm, as if the whole world is still all right because we have each other. âI love you.â
âI love you more.â She smiles as she sits up and makes a last-minute attempt to drag me back to bed.
Itâs so fucking hard to leave when sheâs like this.
I make my way downstairs and see my trusty friend Alan standing beside the car.
âMorning.â I smile.
He gives me a sad smile, and I frown. âEverything all right?â
He opens the door of the limo, and Tristan, Christopher, and Elliot are in the back, waiting for me.
I frown. âHi.â My eyes flick to Alan in question. âWhatâs going on?â
âGet in.â Elliot sighs.
I glance between them; their faces are solemn, and I know something has happened. âIs Dad all right?â I ask.
âDadâs fine.â
âMom?â
âSheâs great. Get in.â
I get in and close the door, and the limo pulls out into the traffic.
âI want you to know that we donât believe anything about this, and we are simply here for you,â Tristan says.
âWhatâs going on?â I snap as agitation washes over me.
Elliot hands me the paper. I stare at it for a moment, and it takes a few seconds for my brain to process what Iâm seeing.
The front page of the Gazette is a huge image of Emily kissing Jake the investigator.
Sheâs holding his hand and smiling as his lips press to hers. It looks as though itâs in a restaurant or something.
I frown as my chest tightens. âWhat the fuck is this?â I snap angrily as I flick the paper.
I scan the story.
Jameson MilesâMedia Guruâs Fall from Grace
In what appears to be the final nail in Jameson Milesâs media coffin, his fiancée, Emily Foster, has been having a secret affair. The two have been spotted in various locations and were snapped holidaying in Italy two months ago. Leaked bank statements released today prove that Jameson Miles has been embezzling money and transferring it to an offshore account. The board is expected to fire him as CEO of Miles Media today, and criminal charges will be laid. Looks like Emily Foster jumped ship just in time.
