FAIZAN
âI think that nurse has a crush on you,â Jack says as soon as the nurse exits the room.
âWhat?â Ryan asks, frowning at his brother.
âShe does. She was blushing while checking up on him.â
âDude, heâs married.â Finn points it.
âI know that.â
âI think you need sleep.â I tell him.
âMaybe.â
Mama left a few minutes ago to help ammi for the funeral of Shoaibâs mother. Arzo left the hospital thirty minutes ago to go change at Hafsahâs and talk to her. And Iâve been listening to whatever nonsense Jack has been saying.
Where Farhan, Finn and Ryan are quiet when they are tired. Jack rambles.
âYou guys can head home.â I tell them. Theyâve been here for hours, making sure that everything is alright. I am very grateful to them.
âWeâll go in a while.â Farhan says.
âHenry took care of the police,â Ryan tells me, âwhatever happened is buried.â
âGood.â I donât want the press to be all over this and I am sure Shoaib doesnât want to read what his mother did in headlines.
âBy the way,â I start, âthank you for all of your help,â
Finn nods, âno problem. What are friends for?â
âDriving your bleeding friend to the hospital apparently,â Jack says.
We let out a chuckle, the tension fading.
âSeriously, I am really grateful.â I say.
They nod, falling quiet.
The silence breaks as the door to the room opens and Arzo walks in.
âA nurse has a crush on Faizan,â Jack blurts.
She halts in her steps, frowning, âwhat?â
âShe was blushing while checking up on him,â
âOkay?â
âIgnore him,â Ryan and I say.
She chuckles and walks towards the bed.
âEverything okay?â I ask, sensing her tensed body.
âYeah,â she says
âWhat happened with Shoaib?â
âNothing, um, baba, Zahid bhai and Abbu are with him right now. The Janaza will be held in Zuhr.â
âDo you want me to come with you?â
âNo, itâs okay. You need rest.â
âAnd donât worry, we'll be present at the Janaza. We'll help them.â Farhan says.
âOkay.â
âYou guys should head home. Youâve been here all night.â Arzo tells them.
âYeah, okay.â Finn says.
âCall us if you need anything.â Ryan says.
âThank you,â Arzo says.
âNo problem.â
As soon as the guys leave, I ask, âAre you okay?â
She nods, âIâm fine.â she says, âI am going to visit you after the funeral. I might be a little late.â
âItâs okay. Take your time.â
She nods. I kiss her knuckles, earning a small smile.
âAre you okay? Does the wound hurt?â she asks.
âNo.â
âPromise?â
I smile, âpromise.â
As long as sheâs in the same room, safe and sound, nothing else matters, all the pain and worry fades away.
I meant what I said to her. Sheâs the moon I stare at whenever I need comfort during my chaotic times.
My amar.
ARZO
After Hira Chachi janaza leaves, I stay at my parentsâ house for a while, making sure everything is alright. After the men return from the graveyard, I inform ammi that Iâm leaving to visit Faizan.
When I enter his room, I find him reading a book.
âAssalamu Alaikum,â I say, putting my purse aside.
âWale Kum Assalam,â he greets back and puts away the book.
I kiss his cheeks and sit by his bed.
âHow did it go?â Faizan asks.
âFine.â
âHow is Shoaib?â
âShaken. Heâs been distant the whole time. Refusing to talk to anyone.â
âHe needs time.â
âYeah,â I release a heavy breath, âhow are you?â
âGood. A little tired of being in this room.â
I give him a small smile, âyou have to stay here for a few more days.â
He sighs, âI know.â
He lifts his hand and places it on my face, caressing my cheekbones. I lean into his touch.
After a beat, he says, âLay with me.â
I blink, âwhat?â
âI canât spend the whole day without holding you.â
I sit back, âyouâre hurt.â
âIâm fine.â he says then scoots to make space, âthere.â
âWh-â
âPlease.â
I stare at him for a moment then sigh, âfine,â
Taking off my shoes, I get on the bed and carefully lay down, my head resting on his shoulder. I tuck my hands between us while his thumb caresses my arm. Even through the cloth, his touch sends a shiver through my body.
âFaizan?â
âYes, amar?â
âThank you,â
âFor what?â
I look up at him, âfor everything. Youâre always there for me, you put me first before everything, you believe in me even when I donât believe in myself. There arenât enough words to describe how grateful I am that you brought the marriage proposal to my parents' house.â
He smiles and kisses my forehead, âI would do anything to make you happy, amar. You are my world. My comfort. My happiness. I am so grateful to have you as my wife. Youâre the best thing Iâve prayed for.â
I smile, my heart filling up with love, âand youâre mine.â
