Chapter 154 Disparity Is Huge

Lysander could have never imagined that upon her return home, the first words out of her mother’s mouth wouldn’t be a request to check on her younger sister. Instead, it was, “You’re divorced?”

Both of her parents were already over fifty years old. They mostly use their phones to scroll through Instagram and order groceries. The scene that day when Lysander caused a commotion at the hospital entrance could be considered a big deal, yet in another sense, it was somewhat trivial.

Aside from the clites in Harborbrook, which common folk even knew who Lysander was?

“Where’s Michelle? I’m going to check on her homework,” said Lysander.

With a stern face, Maverick Thorne’s expression was somewhat cold. “Come back here. I’m not done talking to you yet.”

“The college entrance examination is still more important.”

Lysander’s mother, Laura Olsen, said, “We’ve enrolled your sister in a tutoring class, so she’s not at home right

now.

Lysander came to understand.

Her parents intentionally sent her sister away, preparing to question her thoroughly.

Since she couldn’t avoid it anymore, she had no choice but to accept her fate. “Yes, I did have a divorce.”

Laura wore a look of confusion. “Why? Is it because you’ve been too busy with work to have children? Or is it because of something else…”

Maverick interrupted, “What else could it be? The Guerra family is from high society, while ours is just an ordinary one. I disagreed when she decided to get married. Lysander, we aren’t the type to rely on connections. We don’t expect you to marry into wealth and become a rich lady. The gap between our family and theirs is too vast. Even if a marriage were decided out of momentary affection, it would eventually end due to incompatible worldviews.”

Lysander listened, taking a deep breath.

Maverick was right in the first part of what he said. The gap between her and Josiah was too wide. They, indeed, weren’t a good match.

However, the latter part was ironically in reverse.

Lysander’s views actually aligned quite well with Josiah’s. What was missing, however, was that “fleeting affection.”

Seeing she remained silent, Laura eventually softened. She patted her daughter’s hand and said, “It’s okay. If you’ve decided to divorce, then that’s it. It might even be for the best. I was always worried about you being mistreated in the Guerra family. Now that you’ve left, I actually feel more at ease.”

Lysander gave a slight nod, uttering, “Mm–hmm.”

“How many days off did you request from the hospital for this trip home?”

“Half a month,” Lysander said, “Michelle’s college entrance exam is crucial. I’ve assisted the director before, and he told me not to rush. He suggested I could return after my sister’s exams are over.” Mother sighed. “All right. Take some time off these days to relax and refresh your mind.”

“I’m fine, Mom, don’t worry about me.”

Laura’s eyes welled up with tears. “Well, as long as you’re okay. Why don’t you chat with your father for a bit? I’ve bought a lot of your favorite foods today, so let’s have a good meal tonight.”

“All right, thanks Mom.”

Discussing matters of the heart with Laura could be considered a heart–to–heart between mother and daughter. However, Lysander’s father had always been a strict parent.

From the moment Lysander stepped through the front door, she noticed Maverick incessantly smoking.

Discussing such topics with her father, both Lysander and Maverick found it a bit awkward.

Lysander said, “Dad, you’ve lost weight.”

Maverick glanced at her, his frustration evident as he sighed. “You two sisters, not one of you gives me peace

of mind.”

“So what if I’m divorced? It’s not a crime. My work’s been going really well, and the director highly appreciates me. Who knows, I might even get promoted in the future. By the way, I’ve been saving up to make a down payment on a house in Harborbrook. Once I have my own place, I’ll bring both you and Mom over. Michelle can come back on weekends once she starts college. Wouldn’t it be nice for us to all b together?”

Maverick gazed at her leisurely for a while, ultimately giving in, “You… live alone in the city, so take good care of your health, and don’t push yourself too hard.”

Feeling touched, Lysander said, “I understand, Dad.”

“Could you just casually buy a house in Harborbrook? Could it be possible without a hefty down payment of hundreds of thousands? Then there’s the monthly mortgage payments, amounting to thousands, even tens of thousands. Committing to that for thirty years, the pressure is immense.”

Lysander said with a smile, “It’s no big deal. I work in Harborbrook after all, so I need to buy a place of my own to live in.”

Maverick seemed to sense something, asking her worriedly. “When did you and Josiah part ways?”

“It’s been about two or three months now.”

“Where have you been staying recently?”

“I used to live at Daphne’s place, but later I rented a house of my own, which is quite close to the hospital.”

Maverick scoffed, “So much for being an elite. He kicked you out as soon as the divorce was finalized. They sure are ruthless.”
