Just as Lysander was about to drift into a cozy slumber, Josiahâs voice snapped her awake. She immediately. pulled the blanket over her head, trying to block him out..
Certain that she was still awake, Josiah pressed on, âThe temperatureâs dropped tonight. Check the weather if you donât believe me.â
This was no exaggeration. He was so cold that his head was spinning-
The door wasnât soundproof enough to mulle his discontented voice. Realizing she couldnât sleep through it. Lysander got up and trudged to the door, grumbling. âMr. Guerra, this isnât a fiveâstar hotel with room
service.â
âThe temperatureâs in the single digits. A blanket wonât cut it.â
Too tired to respond with âserves you right,â Lysander mumbled, âI only have one quilt. No extras.â
Thinking he wasnât asking for much, Josiah pleaded, âAnything warm will do. give me whatever you have.
Realizing she wouldnât get any peace otherwise, Lysander gave in.
Just
âOkay, remember what you said.â She threw her quilt out the door and quickly locked it again.
Accompanied by a soft âclickâ, the bedroom door was locked once again.
She did not bother checking if Josiah caught the quilt. Instead, she pulled out a thick winter blanket from her closet, wrapped herself in it, and fell asleep.
The next morning. Lysander was roused by persistent knocking, seemingly from next door.
Presumably, Josiah had gone back to figure out a way to open the door.
She had no intention of getting involved, but the heavy winter blanket soon became too hot, forcing her
out of bed.
Resignedly, Lysander rubbed her face to wake herself up and went to tell Josiah to quiet down. Entering the living room, she met his gaze.
Just like her. Josiah had just woken up on the couch.
Their eyes met, and she noticed how he had moved the single armchair to the end of the long couch, covering himself with the quilt. He did not look as miserable as he had claimed last night. âYou look quite comfortable,â she remarked.
The knocking from next door was still echoing.
Smoothing his tousled hair, Josiah said, âYour couch is a bit small. Iâll replace it for you someday.â
Knock, knock, knockâ¦
The commotion from next door grew louder. Josiah heard it too and frowned.

âNo, I gave her the weekend off,â he replied.
Lysander furrowed her brows. âIâll check it out.â

Seeing her in a thin nightgown, still groggy, Josiah stood up. âIâll go. Theyâre knocking on my door after. all.
Before Lysander could respond, he opened the door to find two people standing in the hallway.
Aiden and Zane?
Aiden was knocking so hard it was almost like he was pounding on the door. âIt does not make sense. I called the resort. They said Josiah did not return last night,â he muttered in confusion.
âMaybe he went home,â Zane suggested.
âEven if he did go home, why did he not take his phone? Iâm calling him. Listen. Itâs ringing inside.â
Zane paled. âJosiah never goes anywhere without his phone. Didnât he have gastritis recently? Could he have passed out?â
âImpossible!â Aiden said in shock, his knocking intensifying. âJosiah! Josiah, are you okay? Answer me if you can hear-
He was abruptly cut off midâsentence..
Striding over icily, Josiah interrupted them, âCan you be more considerate? Itâs the weekend. Some people are trying to sleep.
âSorry, Josiah, we forgot. Itâs notâ¦â Aiden began, then trailed off, looking Josiah up and down, stunned into silence.
Zane, equally surprised, was speechless.
Josiah frowned. âWhatâs with you two?â
Deciding there was no point in delaying, Aiden asked, âJosiah, did you spend the night at Lysanderâs?â
Josiah nodded. âSo?â
Aidenâs eyes widened in shock. âYou two are progressing fast. Last time at the resort, she was stillâ¦
Unable to find the right words, he trailed off, and Zane covered his mouth just in time.
Zane was aware of some of the past events between Josiah and Lysander. She lived just next door.
Josiah had emerged from Lysanderâs home in his house clothes and clearly had just woken up. It was obvious he hadnât spent the night alone.
No further questions were needed.
Zane cheerfully greeted Josiah, âMorning. Josiah. Please pass our regards to Lysander.â
Stopped by Zane, Aiden quickly gathered his thoughts. Removing Zaneâs hand, he explained his presence. Edid not mean to entice such a commotion. I think I donned my phone in your house last time I visitedâ

He was the one who helped Josiah find this place. He often came over for drinks and chats, sometimes misplacing things.
Josiahâs mood soured, his peaceful morning ruined.
Rubbing his temples, Josiah took a deep breath and tamped down his irritation at being rudely woken up before asking. âWhat is that in your hand?â
Realizing he might have disrupted more than Josiahâs sleep, Aiden said awkwardly, âIt is a spare phone. I thought I would call and explain instead of coming over, but you did not answer.â
Raising an eyebrow, Josiah asked, âCanât you afford a new phone?â
Aiden sheepishly explained, âYou know I keep my personal and work lives separate. This phone has important numbers. I wouldnât have come so early otherwise.â
Exasperated, Josiah asked, âWhat is so important that you had to come?â
Feeling cornered, Aiden confessed, âWell, it is the contacts from the women I met. If I donât get it back, they might have trouble reaching me.â
This was the reason why he absolutely had to come.
Zane rolled his eyes. âWomen, Aiden? I thought it was something important.â
Aiden nudged him. âAdrian is dedicated to one woman. The family counts on me to keep the line going. I have to make an effort.â
