The people who had previously crowded and pressured her finally quieted down for a moment.
At that moment, a voice chimed in, âMs. Thorne does have a point. The profits we can secure are the most tangible. Letâs focus on preparing for the competitive tendering first.â
Lysander glanced at the speaker and recognized him immediately.
They were one of the four individuals Josiah had previously invited for a private meeting.
Another person chimed in, âIndeed; the competive tendering process is the main priority right now. Letâs focus on the proposal first. Ms. Thorne, Iâll send the information for the competitive tendering to your email shortly. Please take a look at it first.â
âAll right; thank you. Letâs call it a day then. Iâve taken into account all the suggestions everyone made today. Iâll strive to keep up with you all in the future. Meeting adjourned,â Lysander said.
Rowan quickly called out to her and said, âWait! You havenât specified when you will give us an answer, Ms. Thorne. Telling us you will give us one as soon as possible simply wonât cut it. You need to provide us with a specific deadline.â
After giving it some thought, Lysander said, âThe day after tomorrow, then.â
âDo you realize how many companies are vying for this contract, Ms. Thorne? If the response you provide the day after tomorrow turns out to be a useless suggestion, weâll all have to start from scratch again.â
âWhen do you think would be a suitable time, then, Mr. Cobb?â
âFirst thing tomorrow morning. Weâll meet here in this conference room. I hope that you will provide us with an explanation, Ms. Thorne. Otherwise, it wonât just be Mr. Castillo, but most of the executives might have to consider finding another job!â Rowan said.
That evening, she hurried home, quickly ate her dinner, and then immediately retreated into the study.
The sudden ring of the doorbell shattered the silence within the house.
Lysander opened the door and upon lifting her head, she saw Josiah standing there, his face devoid of any expression.
The corridor was eerily quiet, devoid of any noise whatsoever.
Lysander rubbed her forehead and asked, âWhat is it?â
It seemed that Josiah had cooled down, he retorted, âWhy arenât you asleep yet, given how late it is?â
Only then did Lysander realize that time had unknowingly slipped to eleven oâclock.
âWe have a meeting tomorrow morning, and I still have some work to handle,â she said, exhaustion seeping into her words. Too weary to engage in a drawnâout conversation with him, she asked again, âDid you need something from me?â
Josiah lifted the thermal jar he was holding, âAfter I returned, I noticed your lights were still on, so I thought Iâd get you some lateânight snacks.â

Lysanderâs dark lashes fluttered as she said, âThank you, but Iâm not hungry. Please stop bothering me.â
As she spoke, she was about to close the door.
Josiahâs voice was somewhat muffled as he asked, âWhat could be so important?â
âItâs about work. Iâm lagging behind significantly and I need to catch up with everyone elseâs progress as soon as possible. If thereâs nothing else. Iâll get back to it now,â Lysander responded as patiently as possible.
The door was held open by Josiahâs unoccupied hand.
âHow did you find your day at Thorne Constructions and Energies? I heard the meeting didnât go too well,â he said casually.
Lysanderâs action of shutting the door came to a halt. âYou really do have quite the knack for gathering information.â
Josiah moved forward into the foyer, glancing briefly at the lit study room before heading straight for the laptop that displayed intricate spreadsheets. Beside it, a pile of files and Lysanderâs halfâfinished notes were scattered.
Lysander trailed half a step behind, entering quietly. Seeing him intently focused on the numbers on the report with a serious expression, she didnât interrupt.
A moment later, Josiah lowered his gaze and asked, âWho made this table?â
Lysander gave it some thought and said, âI requested it from the marketing department.â
Josiah asked again, âDidnât any of them offer it to you on their own?â
Feeling no need to withhold this minor detail from him, Lysander replied with a sigh, âYeah⦠Without your around, they donât really acknowledge me. The marketing departmentâs focus isnât on their work. When I called them at four in the afternoon, they were already contemplating to clock out. I couldnât get the hard copy of the documents, so I had to make do with the digital version.â
The look in Josiahâs eyes turned gloomy when he heard that. âI suspect they never printed a hard copy at
all.â
Lysander looked at the report with confusion written all over her face. âWhy?â she asked.
Josiah glanced at the side index and said, âThereâs no page dedicated to qualification certifications in the appendix. I remember the auditor required that competitive tendering companies must meet certain qualification standards. Any report printed like this would only be screened out once submitted.â
He set down the thermal jar, lightly moved the mouse to add a note, then said, âIf this isnât the work of a newcomer, then the person in charge of this must certainly have an issue with you.â
This was no longer a secret, and lysander had already experienced it today.
She lowered her gaze to the report and said, âIâve already crossâchecked the specific figures within, and there are no major issues. Are there any other problems apart from the omission?â
Josiah pulled up a chair and sat down, taking a pen and jotting down a series of numbers on a piece of paper. He circled them and said, âThis is the job of the finance department. Even the boldest accountant wouldnât dare to tamper with the books. However, any oversight in data verification would have nothing to

do with them.â
During the day, Lysander had already repeatedly verified and confirmed the information in her office. Now, as she looked at the key issue that had been pointed out, she could only admit, âEvery profession. has its specialists, I truly didnât notice this.â
the
âReviewing data isnât exactly the job of most authoritative figure in a company. What do you think the audit department is there for?â Josiah reminded her.
Lysander sighed more heavily than before. âFrom top to bottom, everyone in the company is now your fan, Mr. Guerra. They are very hostile to a new leader like me. However, I said I would personally handle. the competitive tendering matters, so itâs only right that I personally check the reports now. Thereâs no better way to get started with work than this.â
Josiah scoffed lightly. âSo your solution is to burn the midnight oil and work overtime?â
Lysander settled back into her chair, continuing her search through the report for sections she could incorporate into her plan.
âI donât have any other options.â
âOf course you do.â
Lysander furrowed her brow in confusion.
Josiah tapped his chest lightly with his finger and said, âAsk me for help.â
Lysander fell speechless when she heard that.
A moment later, she plucked up the courage and said, âYouâre no longer with Thorne Constructions and Energies, yet you seem to be quite informed about the happenings within the company.â
Josiah nodded. âSince you just left, I had to keep a closer eye. Inviting those few people for a meal wasnât for nothing.
Lysander gave him a sidelong glance, not believing a word of what he said. âThere were only so many people in the conference room, and you even understood the situation at that time. You must have been particularly sharpâeyed and keenâeared when you were in charge of the company before.â
ww
Josiah refrained from making any judgments, simply stating, âWhat you need isnât sharp eyes and keen ears, but informers that truly belong to you.â
Lysanderâs eyes were clear as day as she asked, âHow should I make arrangements for the informers?â
With a relaxed pace, Josiah asked, âDo you want to learn how?â
âSure. State your conditions; we can even negotiate a new couch,â Lysander said, agreeing readily.
