Chapter 40
Into the Veil: The Dragon King's Fae
âHey, donât sweat it about the sudden call. Itâs been a while, and we didnât think weâd get another chance soon,â Rin said, his voice apologetic.
We strolled into the courtyard, Rayne at our side.
âNo biggie. I wanted to hang out with you guys, and I knew Navine wouldnât mind,â I reassured him.
Rayne snorted. âAfter everything heâs put you through, he better not.â
I wasnât surprised by his comment, even though Iâd expected Rin to be the first to bring it up. But then again, Rayne had a knack for beating Rin to the punch.
I halted, turning to face him. I knew it was better to address this now rather than later.
âI get it, but Iâve decided to move on. Like I said at our meeting, dwelling on the past doesnât do us any good, especially now that the main problem is gone,â I reminded him.
Rayne seemed to soften a bit. âYeah, youâre right. All this mess started with that other Dragon, didnât it?â he conceded.
âSeems like it,â Rin chimed in.
He glanced toward the palace before continuing, âWe were really worried about you, so knowing youâre okay is a huge relief. You know weâre not the type to believe everything we hear.â
I couldnât help but chide him. âThatâs not the best habit to have. You know Lord Jekia wouldnât keep things from you now. He only did it before to protect you.â
Rin nodded. âWeâre starting to understand that more now. Even Selenia is, though she still gets upset about being left out sometimes.â
I glanced around. âWhere are Selenia and your mom? I thought Iâd see them too.â
Rayne filled me in. âDad asked them to take Luna and Aurora to Bergan. Theyâre visiting the Matchmaking House there. Lunaâs good friends with one of the new matrons and wanted to see how theyâre doing after all the recent chaos.â
I could read between the lines. Even though I knew about Lunaâs issues with her dad and how they were tied to this House, I suspected there was another reason for their visit today.
âDid your dad not want Luna and Aurora involved in this conversation?â I asked.
Rayne nodded. âHe thought it would be better if it was just us. It was kind of convenient that they got that invitation the other day.â
I couldnât help but smile. âThatâs Lord Jekia for you. He has a knack for turning things to his advantage. But Iâm glad you guys are here. Itâs been too long, and itâs comforting after everything thatâs happened.â
Rin looked at me, concern in his eyes. âAre you sure youâre okay? You seem fine physically, but youâve been a bit on edge since we got here.â
I hadnât even noticed how tense Iâd become or how often Iâd been glancing around until he pointed it out.
âI guess I have been,â I admitted.
Rayne chimed in. âThat Dragon really got to you, huh? You keep looking around like you did when we were kids.â
I sighed. âI think itâs more the circumstances this time. Dominick managed to get me out of the palace by making me sleepwalk and using the Golems and Trolls on the mountain. Itâs made me super cautious about sleeping or straying too far from Navineâs palace,â I confessed.
Rayne studied my face, holding my chin gently. âThatâs why you look so worn out. Have you let Navine help you? Or maybe Anika could give you something to help you sleep better.â
I shook my head. âSheâs offered a few times, but I donât think I need it. I can handle things on my own. I just need a little more time to let it all go.â
Rayne sighed. âAs stubborn as ever.â
Rin changed the subject. âSpeaking of Anika, I heard from Felicity that sheâs going to be staying at the palace with you and Navine.â
I nodded. âShe is. She went back to Forge yesterday to sort out things with her home and shop, and she should be back with us in a few days.â
Rayne grinned. âLooks like Navineâs not getting rid of her that easily. Maybe we should drop by more often.â
I giggled. âI think Navine might have his hands full after all this. Lorelei and Niles said the same thing, though I think Niles always came and went as he pleased anyway.â
âIsnât it fascinating?â Rin mused as we huddled under a tree. âI didnât see it coming, him bringing that Elf along. She was one of the females that Prism Dragon had, right?â
âYep, she was. There were three of them, all different. Two were Faeries and Umira is an Elf. Iâm relieved theyâre all safe now. I was worried,â I confessed.
âYouâve always been more concerned about others than yourself, Raelina. Maybe itâs time you started thinking about yourself. Youâre in a position to do that now,â Rayne pointed out.
âI donât think I can. Itâs just who I am,â I replied.
âMaybe itâs not such a bad thing, Rayne,â Rin proposed. âRaelinaâs influence seems to be making Navine a better person. Weâve managed to keep the most powerful alpha in these lands balanced. Hopefully, with his and othersâ help, things will be more stable now.â
âWeâve tackled some big problems in the past, so I suppose thatâs possible,â Rayne conceded.
âBack to our earlier conversationâwhen will you guys introduce me to Aurora and Luna? I feel like Iâm being left out,â I grumbled.
Rin chuckled. âWe have been doing that, havenât we? You didnât even get to attend Auroraâs celebration here.â
âI wanted to, but I was so sick I think I slept for three days straight. I was so bummed when I couldnât make it!â I sulked.
âWe could always throw another party, or maybe Navine would let us have one there. Iâd like to meet this Snake weâve heard about. I never thought Iâd hear of one of them caring about someone else,â Rayne suggested.
âI donât think Nanash is like most Snakes, but I think thatâs a good thing. Heâs been a great friend from the start, and itâs nice to know I can count on him,â I shared.
âWe all know not to judge a book by its cover, Rayne. Weâve spent our lives around Spiders whoâve cared for us,â Rin reminded.
âTrue, and both Ms. Edifel and Ms. Vishu have always been wonderful. I miss Ms. Edifel,â I agreed, gazing at the webs that crisscrossed the tree branches.
âWe miss her too, but Vishu is a lot like her,â Rayne added.
âI take that as a compliment.â Vishu descended from her webs, landing softly in the grass near us. She was as beautiful as ever, with her long, shiny white hair and big blue eyes. Her upper body was clad in a pretty blue top, and her skirt draped over her Spider abdomen and legs.
She gave me a sweet smile as she settled next to me, pulling me into a gentle side hug. âIâve missed you too, Raelina. Youâve grown into such a beautiful woman, and itâs wonderful to see youâve found some happiness. I know Mother wouldâve felt the same way.â
I believed that too. Edifel had been such a wonderful Spider from what I remembered, and I hadnât known her long before she was killed in the siege on Lord Jekiaâs previous palace. Sheâd taken care of me after Lord Jekia saved me, alternating with Lady Lana to treat my wounds and look after me.
She was always so kind and loving. It still hurt to know she was gone.
My thoughts were interrupted when Umira approached us. âMay I join you?â she asked, bowing her head politely.
âYou donât need to be so formal. Weâre not as high-ranking as our father, so speak freely,â Rin told her.
âThatâs very kind of you,â Umira said as she sat near me and Vishu. âI admit, Iâm still adjusting to such kindness. Lord Dominick used to show it, but itâs been so long I feel like Iâve almost forgotten it.â
âItâs a shame to hear that. Youâre a beautiful Elf, and your manners show youâve been raised well. Thereâs no reason you shouldnât be treated properly,â Vishu stated.
âNone of us deserved the path our lives took these past few years,â Umira confessed. âI think Sky got the worst of it. I hope she finds happiness in the Eastern Lands, just like Ginger has found at home.â
Rin and Rayne were watching her intently as she spoke. From the get-go, I could tell they were intrigued by her, probably as much as they were about Dominick and his story. Dominick had likely kept a lot of things hidden, even from Lord Jekia and Emelio.
âIâm sure they will,â I reassured her. âAnd I bet Lyric will make sure Sky is okay. Navine told me sheâs working for a Faerie who helped raise Lyric, so thereâs nothing to worry about.â
âSo sheâs working for Grizelda?â Rin mused. âInteresting. She always struck me as the type to take people in when they needed help.â
âYouâve met her?â Umira asked, surprised.
âWe both have, in recent years,â Rayne replied. âOur father wanted us to travel to other lands periodically to build relationships with their rulers. Plus, itâs a good learning experience for us.â
âYou met Luna in the Western Lands, didnât you?â I chimed in. âWas that your first time there?â
Rayne nodded. âYes, I was there on some business for Father. Meeting Luna was pure chance, but Merrick didnât mind me bringing her back as my beta.â
âGood thing, too,â Rin teased. âYou probably wouldnât have come back without her.â
âI could make a comment about you sneaking off with Aurora and not telling us, but that wouldnât be polite in front of Raelina and her friend,â Rayne shot back.
âHuh? What do you mean?â Umira asked, her head tilted in confusion.
âItâs a long story,â I quickly interjected, eager to change the subject. There was no point in letting them get into a drawn-out debate about who handled their beta situation better. I knew both stories, and frankly, neither Rin nor Rayne had initially treated their Betas well. But whatâs done is done.
âAnyway, I hope to visit the Eastern Lands soon. Maybe Iâll see her.â
âOh, yes. Lord Navine and Lord Lyric are related, arenât they?â Umira remembered. âI recall Lord Dominick mentioning it.â
âYes, they are,â I confirmed. âNavine told me he wants to visit Lyric more often. Heâs always been upset about his brother leaving and then dying. He wants to keep that family connection with Lyric. I think itâs a good idea. Itâs important to stay in touch with the family you have left.â
My words hung heavy in the air. I could tell Rin was struggling with what to say next. âI donât mean to pry, Raelina, but are you sure youâve truly forgiven Navine for what happened to your family?â he asked. âWe canât ignore the fact that he knew about the planned attack before our father did.â
I knew this question would come up often and for a long time, so I decided to be honest.
âI understand why youâre asking,â I said. âAnd Iâll admit, it wasnât easy for me to accept. I was furious when I found out, and I considered leaving Navine because I didnât know if I could forgive him.â
âWhat made you change your mind?â Umira asked.
It wasnât easy to explain, but I tried my best. âI gave myself time to calm down and think things through,â I said. âI went through a whirlwind of emotions and considered a lot of things. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Navine had little to do with what happened. Yes, he received letters warning him, but there was never any evidence to back up those claims, nor did he know who sent them. And even if he had been there, whoâs to say the lycans wouldnât have distracted him somehow? They often did that to Lord Jekia, and with Dominick on their side, it wouldâve been easy for them.â
âFather often found himself chasing after them, trying to prevent their attacks,â Rayne confessed. âI remember countless days when heâd be gone, trying to track them down.â
âMother was always worried about it too,â Rin chimed in.
âI know, and thatâs why I decided we needed to talk things out before I made my decision. It wasnât easy, and I was angry at him, but I also realized how much I loved him,â I confessed. âEven though it hurt, I could forgive him, not just for his sake, but for mine too.â
âIsnât that part of loving someone?â Vishu asked. âEveryone makes mistakes, and I canât imagine Lord Navine being too proud to regret his.â
âYouâre right, he isnât,â I agreed. âBut I did tell him that I wanted something in return for my forgiveness. I wanted him to be the Dragon King I know heâs capable of being, and to never ignore a call for help again, no matter how strange it might seem. I told him I would leave if he didnât do those things.â
âHeâd be a fool to doubt you. I think we all know youâd follow through,â Rin said with a chuckle.
âI wouldnât have a choice. I could never trust him again. But I donât think it will come to that. Things are falling into place, and weâll be okay,â I assured them.
Iâm not entirely convinced of my own words yet, I thought. Only time will tell if Navine keeps his promise.
Suddenly, Vishu glanced toward the gate.
âTheyâre back earlier than expected,â she noted, standing up. She reached for a strand of web on a nearby tree to open the courtyard entrance.
A wave of anxiety washed over me as Lady Lana entered with Selenia and two other women I didnât recognize. I had been eager to meet Luna and Aurora, but now that the moment was here, I wasnât sure I was ready.
Maybe it was because of everything that had happened with Dominick. I wasnât feeling my best mentally, but I didnât have a choice now.
Selenia approached us, a bright smile on her face. She seemed more mature than the last time I saw her, which was almost a year ago.
She was a beautiful Luna dog, bearing many of her motherâs features, including the same white ears and tail. Her hair was a mix of white and dark streaks that highlighted her curls, and her golden eyes were as vibrant as ever.
âRaelina! I was hoping weâd see you when we got back!â she exclaimed.
âLet me guess. Thatâs why you all returned earlier than expected,â Rin teased.
âWe thought things would be mostly settled by now, and thereâs no harm done,â Lady Lana said, standing next to Vishu. She gave me a relieved smile.
âIâm glad to see you here, Raelina. Iâve been worried since I heard about what happened.â
âI know, and I promise Iâm okay now,â I reassured her.
The other girls sat next to Rin and Rayne, and I studied them. It was easy to tell them apart. Aurora looked more human, like Lady Lana.
It was strange how similar we looked. Her golden-blonde hair fell to her waist, and her sky-blue eyes were as vibrant as mine. I wondered if I wouldâve looked like her if I were human.
Luna, on the other hand, looked more like a Fae, like me. But she had short ivory horns protruding from her long white hair.
Her pale blue eyes were framed by dark lashes, and she had one of the most beautiful faces Iâd ever seen.
I thought I shouldâve felt jealous looking at her, but I didnât. Was it because I was happy with Navine?
âNow that youâre both here, letâs introduce you. This is our childhood friend Raelina, the last Sun Faerie,â Rin said, gesturing first to Aurora, then to Luna.
âThis is my beta, Aurora, and Rayneâs beta, Luna.â
âFinally getting to meet you is a pleasure,â I said, flashing my most charming smile. This was the encounter Iâd been anticipating, so I needed to just chill and enjoy it.
âWait, youâre Raelina? Youâre even more stunning than Rin described,â Aurora remarked.
âThank you, thatâs kind of you,â I replied, considering pointing out our similarities but deciding against it for the moment. âIâm glad to finally meet you both as well. I regret itâs taken me this long.â
âNo worries. We understand things have been a bit chaotic for you, just like for us. Are you doing okay now?â Luna asked, concern in her eyes.
âIâm doing better in many ways, though I wonât lie, itâs been a bit of a struggle to process everything,â I admitted.
âSo, how did the meeting go? Did everything get sorted out?â Lady Lana asked, curiosity piquing.
âIt went surprisingly well, even better than Father anticipated. Navine is keeping his position and the Silver Dragon Mordecai is stepping into Dominickâs role. Raelina played a big part in sorting things out,â Rayne filled her in.
âI see,â Lady Lana said, glancing toward the palace doors. âWhy donât you two show me where your father and the Dragons are? Iâd like to see them while theyâre still here.â
I had a hunch this was a scheme to give us girls some privacy, and that suspicion grew when Selenia chose to accompany them and Vishu also excused herself.
Luna and Aurora moved a bit closer to Umira and me.
âWe didnât mean to be rude earlier, Miss Elf. We didnât mean to ignore you,â Luna apologized.
âItâs fine. I know Raelina is close with your family, so I didnât mind waiting my turn. Iâm Umira, by the way,â she introduced herself.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you, Umira. If you donât mind me asking, are you also married to one of the Dragons?â Aurora asked her.
âWell, the Onyx Dragon recently proposed that to me, and Iâm considering it, but I havenât fully accepted yet,â Umira confessed.
I decided to fill them in. They were bound to find out sooner or later.
âUmira was originally one of Dominickâs concubines, but after his death, Niles made his offer to her. So, the decision is hers to make.â
âI see,â Luna said, seemingly connecting the dots. âAre you doing okay now? You look well, but youâve been through a lot.â
Umira nodded. âIâm much better now, thank you for your concern. Itâs very kind of you.â
Aurora was studying me as they spoke.
âIs everything okay?â I asked her.
âOh,â she caught herself and chuckled a bit. âIâm sorry. Itâs just a bit surreal meeting you like this. I didnât expect our resemblance to be so striking.â
âYou really do look alike. Itâs quite remarkable,â Luna chimed in.
âI guess life is full of strange coincidences,â I mused.
âOr maybe Lord Rin had a crush on you before,â Umira suggested.
That was a tough one to deny. I remembered Rin complimenting me often when we were kids. But I was sure it was just a fleeting crush. He wouldnât have let it linger otherwise.
âHe might have had a crush on me when we were kids, but weâve always been just good friends, like I am with Rayne and Selenia. We grew up together, and they see me as another sibling, which is how I see them too,â I clarified.
âThatâs really sweet. Rayne always sounds so happy when he talks about his childhood with you and his siblings,â Luna shared.
âRin does too. It seems like they have a lot of happy memories from their childhood, especially with you,â Aurora agreed.
âRin said that?â I asked, surprised.
âYes, he did,â Aurora confirmed. âHeâs told me countless times how he felt like an outsider everywhere except when he was with his siblings and you. Thatâs why Iâve been so eager to meet you. I hope I can get to know you like he has.â
âIâd like that too. I hope this doesnât sound wrong, but I think being unique gives us a lot in common,â Luna added.
âI donât see anything wrong with admitting it. Weâre both in the same boat, and Iâm thrilled to finally meet you both. Itâs been a long time coming,â I shared with them.
I shifted my gaze to Umira. âI hope youâll welcome Umira as well. Iâm sure sheâd love to make some new friends.â
âAbsolutely! Weâre excited to get to know you better too!â Auroraâs voice rang out cheerfully.
Umiraâs face transformed in a way Iâd never seen before, her eyes sparkling as if they were on the verge of spilling over with joy.
âIâm so grateful! Iâd love to be friends too!â she exclaimed.
