Lorenzo: Chapter 68
Lorenzo: A Grumpy/ Sunshine, Dark mafia Romance (Chicago Ruthless Book 3)
Lorenzo pops his head into the den where Iâm playing with Kat and the kids. âNathan and Drake want to see us at their office, sunshine.â
âOh.â I bite my lip and cast an anxious glance at Kat.
âDrake says its good news,â he assures me.
Kat squeezes my arm. âAnd Lorenzo wonât let anything bad happen.â
Less than an hour later, Iâm seated next to Lorenzo in Drake Jamesâs office. Anxiety and trepidation shudder up my spine, but Lorenzo squeezes my hand, and Iâm reminded that he and the James brothers are on my side.
âSorry to keep you waiting,â Nathan says as he and Drake walk in.
âYou said you have some good news?â Lorenzo asks.
âSome very good news. We found the sister,â Nathan answers with a smirk.
âThe sister? The one you told me about? The one who disappeared?â I ask Lorenzo. âWhat does she have to do with anything?â
Lorenzo nods but keeps his focus on Nathan. âYou found her? How?â
âOne of my new clients back in New York happens to be the best hacker in the country. She found her for me. Michaela Mulcahy is now Callie Stretton, and she lives in Nevada.â
âAnd did you manage to speak to her? Did she tell you what happened? Has Jake been covering for his big brother all these years?â Lorenzo asks.
Drake clears his throat. âHow about we let her answer that herself?â
âHerself?â I gasp. âYou mean sheâs here?â I grip Lorenzoâs hand tighter. Iâm not sure
I want to meet Brad and Jakeâs sister. What if sheâs as awful as they are?
Lorenzo squeezes my hand in return. âIâm right here, sunshine,â he assures me, then turns his attention back to Drake. âShe was willing to come here after hiding for so long? Why?â
âSheâs an advocate for womenâs rights. She runs some charity in Nevada. I gave her an overview of the situation and she was keen to help. Sheâs on the level, I swear.â
âYou want to meet her?â Lorenzo asks me.
âDo you think she can help us?â
âI think she might have some information that we could use to keep Jake off your back until I find a more permanent solution,â he replies. I donât ask what his permanent solution isâI already know. I make a mental note to remind him that he canât go around killing cops.
âThen yes, Iâd like to meet her.â
âBrad and Jake abused her too, Mia,â Nathan says. âHer motives align with ours, I promise you that.â
They abused her? Their own sister? I swallow down a bubble of anxiety as Drake leaves the room. A few seconds later, he comes back with a woman who looks to be in her early thirties and is wearing the coolest pair of purple boots I have ever seen in my life.
She chews on her lip, and I feel her nervous energy from across the room. I guess she has even more reason to be anxious about this meeting than I do.
âCallie?â I say with as wide a smile as I can muster.
âMia, right?â She gives me a faint smile in return.
âYes.â I instinctively jump up from my seat and pull her into a hug. Thankfully, sheâs a hugger too, and she hugs me right back. âThank you so much for coming.â
She laughs nervously, tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear. âAnything I can do to save any woman from those toxic pieces of shit is my pleasure.â
The sadness in her eyes makes me want to cry. I didnât have any siblings, but Kat was like a sister to me growing up. She has a brother, Leo, and he was always kind of an asshole, but I canât comprehend how anyone could hurt their own sister.
When introductions have been made and Drakeâs secretary has provided everyone with a hot drink, the four of us wait for Callie to speak.
âI guess Iâm the one with all of the answers then?â she says with a wry laugh.
âWe have some for you too,â Nathan tells her.
âYou said Brad is dead, right?â she asks.
He gives her a curt nod.
âGood riddance to that piece of shit,â she mutters.
Lorenzo leans forward in his chair. âCan you tell us what happened to you, Callie?â
She takes a sip of her coffee and rests the mug on her thigh. âThat sick fuck beat me and raped me,â she says matter-of-factly, as though sheâs told this story many times.
âBrad?â Lorenzo asks.
âNo.â She shakes her head. âJake.â
âJake?â Lorenzo frowns.
âYeah, I told my parents, and they both just let it happen,â she says with a shrug. âHe was like our dadâs golden boy, and he got away with murderâprobably literally in the case of our mom.â
âYou think it was Jake who killed your mom?â Nathan asks, while I listen in shock.
âI wouldnât put it past him. He was a sick, twisted fuck.â
I squeeze Lorenzoâs hand and try to stop my entire body from shaking.
âJake? Not Brad?â Lorenzo asks again.
âThe semen found on Janice Mulcahyâs body belonged to Jake,â Nathan cuts in. âWe got access to all the sealed files.â
Holy crapballs. What the hell kind of family did I marry into?
âHow old was Jake then, like fifteen?â Lorenzo asks.
Nathan nods. âThatâs why his files were sealed too.â
I fight the urge to be sick. âSemen? You mean Janice? Brad and Jakeâs mom?â Lorenzo squeezes my hand tighter. âSo she was abusing Jake? Having sex with him?â
Callie snorts. âHe was raping her too. I told you, heâs a twisted fuck.â How is she so calm about all this?
Lorenzo takes a deep breath to compose himself before he speaks again. âWhat happened when you were thirteen?â
âI got pregnant. Best thing that ever happened to me,â she says with a derisive laugh. âThatâs when people started to believe me. Child services whipped me out of there and I never looked back. I found out about my momâs death when I was seven months along, and I havenât seen a single one of those fuckers since.â
âWhat happened to your baby?â I ask.
She smiles softly. âHe was adopted by a great family. Heâs doing really well. Just finished college. I donât see him, but I get updates.â
I return her smile, glad that she seems to take comfort in that.
âDid you know that Mike Mulcahy wasnât your father?â Nathan asks her.
âNot back then. I didnât find that out until a few years ago.â
âWho was your father?â Lorenzo asks. I canât believe I had no idea about any of Bradâs messed-up past. âHe have anything to do with how hard it was to access those records?â
âYep. Seems my dear old mom had an affair with a guy named Foster Carmichael,â Callie replies.
Lorenzo frowns. âWhy do I know that name?â
âHe was a big deal in New York in the nineties and early 2000s,â Nathan explains. âBefore he started pissing off the wrong people. But back then he was a big fish with a lot of government pull. Family values were a major foundation of his campaigns. He couldnât afford the scandal if word ever got out that heâd had an affair and a kid with a married woman, so he had the whole thing buried deep.â
âI figure good old Mike knew all along that I wasnât his kid, which was why he allowed Jake to do what he did,â Callie adds. âAnd my mom was bullied by him her whole life.â
âWhere does Brad fit into this though?â I ask, finally finding my voice. âJake always seemed a little afraid of him.â
âI guess he was.â Callie shrugs. âBrad was always a bully too. He was the one person Jake could never push around, and while Brad didnât actively participate in any of the shit Jake did to our mom and me â¦â She shakes her head.
âHe didnât stop it either. And he was the one person who could have exposed Jakeâs secrets.â Drake finishes for her.
Callie nods. âExactly.â
âBut what does all this mean?â I ask. âCallie, you can never let Jake know who you are now. Youâd be putting yourself at risk, and maybe even your son too.â
âMy son is very well protected, I assure you. And while I have no desire to see that piece of shit again, he has the entire Boston police force on his side. Oh yeah, Iâve kept tabs on him. If he wants to pin Bradâs murder on you, he wonât stop until thatâs what heâs done. I will happily do whatever I need to if it means preventing him from ruining your life the way he tried to ruin mine.â She pulls a brown envelope from her purse and hands it to Nathan. âBut I hope this is enough and that it never has to come to that.â
Nathan slides the envelope across his desk. âThis is Michaela Mulcahyâs written statement of everything that happened to her and her mom, and itâs sure as hell gonna be enough to get Jake to back down.â
I lean back in my chair, my entire body trembling as her words sink in. I thought I knew Brad and Jake. And I knew they werenât good men, but now that I know the true extent of the things theyâre capable of â¦
âI will never let him anywhere near you again, Mia,â Lorenzo says, his voice calm and reassuring.
I swallow the huge knot of anxiety balled in my throat. I know Iâm safe with Lorenzo. Heâd protect me from harm even if it meant hurting himself, but if Jake is determined to have me arrested for murderâone that I actually committedâI have no idea how he can stop that from happening. Not unless he can persuade Jake to drop it.
âSo we confront him with the information and warn him that if he doesnât stay the fuck away from Mia, weâll make sure Michaelaâs statement goes public?â Lorenzoâs question is met with nods of approval from Drake and Callie.
âIâll go to trial to see that sick fuck suffer if I have to,â Callie adds.
âDonât do anything stupid, buddy,â Nathan warns Lorenzo. âI can speak with him. Lay it all out on the line right here in my office.â
âThat sounds like a good plan.â I donât want Lorenzo getting himself into trouble.
Lorenzo turns to me. âNo, tesoro. I will look him in the eyes when I threaten his life if he ever comes anywhere near you again. Itâs not up for negotiation.â
Callie grins. âI wish I could be there to see it too.â
âSo, itâs settled then? Youâll speak to him yourself?â Nathan asks Lorenzo. âAnd I mean speak.â
âIâll be good. Iâll take Dante and Max,â he replies with a hint of a smirk.
Drake laughs. âHeâs gonna shit his pants.â
âGood.â Callie stands and sets her coffee mug down on the table beside her. âI have to catch that plane back if Iâm gonna make my meeting later.â
âOf course. Thank you so much for coming, Ms. Stretton,â Nathan says, standing to escort her out.
âThank you for flying me here on your fancy private jet,â she says with a chuckle. âNot every day a girl gets to see one of them.â
I jump up and give her another impromptu hug. âThank you so much, Callie. For everything.â
âMy pleasure, honey. I hope he leaves you in peace now.â I smile at her, trying to think of something appropriate to say back, but she winks at me. âI found my own peace a long time ago, donât you worry about me.â
Nathan returns to the office after escorting her out and grabs his coat. âIf you donât need me for anything else, I have a whole fuckload of shit to deal with in New York.â
âThanks for everything, compagno.â Lorenzo wraps the other man in a hug. âI owe you.â
Nathan hugs him back. âYou will never owe me, buddy, and you know it.â
