Chapter 3

Saving Abba

The smile fell off my lips as she continued to stare at me.

Great, I'm standing here like a fool.

"I brought take-outs, Woks and Koi, your favourite." I tried again. She kept quiet, her eyes on me. I shifted from one foot to the other,  a sigh escaping my lips.

"Najma I'm..."

"Woks and Koi hasn't been my favourite in ages but I appreciate the effort." she said, cutting me off, a small smile creeping onto her lips.

It wasn't no mega watt smile but at this point I was willing to take whatever I got.

"Come in" she said standing aside, I walked in and she closed the door before leading me to the living room.

"Babe, what took you so long?" Khalifa asked his eyes on the TV.

"Abba's here." She informed, gesturing towards me, eyes widened as I stood awkwardly.

"You're alive?!!!" he exclaimed, making me chuckle.

"It's good to see you too."

I set the bags on the coffee table before plopping down on a couch.

"The only reason I let you in is because you brought food and Khalifa and I are too lazy to cook." Najma said, riffling through the bags and taking out a plastic bowl of chicken noodle soup.

Khalifa leaned forward, taking a bowl out, I followed suit and we ate in silence, watching the game. Once the meal was over, I reached over to tidy up the table.

"So why are you really here?" He asked, Najma gasped, slapping his thigh and scowling at him.

"What? It's the truth, we were both thinking of it. I just decided to voice it out"

"Can't I come see how my two favourite people are doing?" I asked leaning back against the couch. Khalifa snorted at my reply making me shake my head.

"You can't expect me to believe that you just remembered us after not answering our calls and messages for months."

"Khalifa just let it go" Najma whispered.

"Come on Naj, he doesn't visit or call us for months, then he comes waltzing in and you expect me not to ask him why?!!!"

"Khalifa" she warned.

"He behaves like a freaking leech not to mention he is out of control"

His words enraged me and I got to my feet, glaring at him.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Najma threw her hands up in frustration, getting up and storming out the room.

"Exactly what I said. You are out of control and you need to get your shit together."

"I didn't come here for a lecture. If I wanted someone to tell me crap I would have gone to the asshole keeping my company from me!!!" I snapped, glaring at him.

"You mean the person stopping you from bankrupting your parents' company because if it were left to you, there won't be any penny left since all you do is chase skirts and party. You are so fucking irresponsible" he sneered.

"Fuck you. I'm not going to stand here and listen to your lectures." I grabbed my keys and turned to leave.

"That's it, leave and go crash a party since that's all you are good at" he goaded. I resisted the urge to turn around and sock him in the jaw but I knew Najma would never forgive me if I did that, so I left instead, slamming the front door behind me and marching to my car.

I got in, taking a deep breath to calm myself, not that it helped.

"Shit!" I shouted, punching the steering wheel before turning on the ignition and driving off.

Going to the house had turned out to be a huge mistake, I was more restless than before. I badly needed a distraction. I dialed Stacey's friend's number but it went straight to voice note.

Hissing, I tried calling Stacey but her phone was switched off. I let out another curse, scrolling through my contacts as I took a left at the junction.

Majority of the girls in my contacts where either too clingy or had migraine inducing voices, tossing my phone aside, I decided to head to the club.

*************

By the time I got to the club, it was already packed. I frowned, spotting a child by the store next to the club.

What's a child doing here?

Shrugging the feeling off, I tossed my keys to the valet and walked to the front of the line.

"Chairman!!!" the bouncer hailed, I ignored him and made my way into the club, the smell of sweaty bodies, loud music and flashing lights assaulted me. I wrinkled my nose, making my way to the VIP section which wasn't as packed.

"The usual, sir?" The bartender asked. I nodded and within a few minutes he came back with a glass of Club Soda and Lime. I took a sip relishing the burn, glancing at the dancefloor, my foot tapping against the floor to the beat of Burna Boy's Ye.

I was so lost in thoughts, I didn't notice the person next to me until a hand appeared in my line of sight.

"I've been trying to get your attention for the last 3 minutes"

I raised a brow, looking her over.

Black tight dress

Fuck me heels

Red lipstick

Killer body.

My lips curled into a smirk, she definitely was what I needed to get my mind off my asshole cousin. The thought of Khalifa soured my mood immediately. He probably had a smug look right now, yapping to Najma about how he is hundred percent sure I am probably at a club sucking off some girl's face.

"Hey!!!" She said again, her voice taking an impatient tone, hands on her waist. "Do you always space out or what?"

Okay, I definitely don't need this energy.

"Are you always this bitchy or what?" I asked, watching as she went pale. She blinked at me several times and I was pretty sure if I looked closely, I would see the smoke coming out of her ears as her brain tried to come to the terms that I didn't fall to her feet.

I knew her type, the quintessential daddy's girl, used to having men follow her every step. Normally, I indulged her type once in a while because they were so easy, give them attention and they fall to your feet but right now she was not what I needed.

I sighed, already annoyed at her continuous gaping.

"Yes, I said what I said. Don't hurt your itty bitty brain trying to think too much about it."

I smiled as her face turned red in anger, she hissed, stomping away.

Good riddance.

I paid for the drink, deciding to head home. The club was not it anymore, this is what happens when they let every Tom, Dick and Harry access to the VIP Section.

I walked out of the club, instructing the valet to bring up my car, when I saw her again, the little girl, seated on the ground, watching the cars driving by.

What the hell?

Unable to hold my curiosity back any longer, I walked over to the building next to the club where she was seated and squatted in front of her.

Her fair skin had been smudged with dirt and the smell coming from her told me she hadn't had a bath in days, possibly weeks, her hair was clumped up and dirty, cheeks smeared with dirt. The gown she was wearing looked like a breeding ground for germs. I frowned, massaging my chest at the unshed tears in her eyes and her bare bruised feet.

"Hello. What's your name?"

I didn't get an answer instead, she stared at me before turning her attention back to the cars.  .

"Where are your parents?" I tried again.

No answer.

Maybe she's deaf or something.

I stood up, it was clear as day I wasn't going to get any answers from her.

Whatever.

I glanced at her once more, before walking back to the club, just as the Valet pulled up with my car, he got out and handed me my keys.

"Here you go, sir."

I got into my car and pressed the ignition button, I glanced at the little girl once more, she was still seated, scratching her arm, her eyes on the road.

Not my problem.

I drove off towards my house, thinking of calling Stacey again. The traffic light turned red and I slowed to a stop, leaning forward to fiddle with the radio.

Burna Boy's Gbona filled the car, I hummed along to the song, gently tapping my fingers against the steering wheel. My mind immediately went back to the little girl and I gritted my teeth annoyed as to why she was stuck in my mind.

The horn of a car jolted me out of my thoughts, I glanced up, noticing the lights had turned green. I stepped on the accelerator and continued driving. The car's wiper came on automatically and I noticed it was raining.

My thoughts snapped back to the girl, was she still there?

There was no way in hell her gown was going to offer her any protection from  the rain and it was already dark. I groaned, turning my car around and ignoring the blaring horns.

I sped down the road, praying she was still there. The rain was getting heavier making it impossible to see anything in the distance. Squinting my eyes, I searched for her. She wasn't where I left her.

Shit!!!

I parked my car by the club and got out, shielding my face from the harsh wind and rain.

Where is she?

I continued looking when I noticed a tiny shape huddled near the club.

Finally.

I approached her carefully, she raised her head to look at me. Her arms were around her as she shivered from the cold. I bit my lip wondering how I was going to get her to come with me.

Fuck it.

Scooping her into my arms, I made my way back to the car. Opening the front passenger seat, I placed her in, buckling her up before going over to the drivers side and getting in. I closed my door and turned on the heater, watching as her shivers subsided before finally coming to a stop.

I reached over to the back seat and got my jacket, laying it over her body. I watched as she cuddled into it before turning to me. I started the car and drove onto the main road.

What the hell did you just do Abba?!!

Fuck.

I slammed on the brakes, the car stopping, right there on the road and stared at the girl as realization dawned on me. I had just picked up a child from the streets. I did not know who she was, whether she was good or not.

All those stories of good Samaritans helping people and then paying the price for it came into my mind. She could be part of a criminal ring and I had just helped her.

Fuck... this cannot be happening.

I groaned, pressing my forehead to the steering wheel. I was officially screwed.

Sighing, I shook my head. The worse was already done. With that, I drove to my house, if I was stopped by the police, I was screwed.

****************

I honked the horn and the security man opened the gate. Sighing in relief, I drove in , parked and got out. I came over to her side and opened the door, picking her up and walking into the house.

I flicked the light on, laying her down on the sofa. She looked around the room with large curious eyes before they settled back on me.

"Are you hungry?" I asked.

As usual I got no reply.

"Are. You. Hungry? Food? Do. You. Want. To. Eat. Food?"

Still no reply.

"Come on, you have to help me here." I groaned, she stared up at me. Sighing. I headed to the kitchen and opened the fridge; it was practically empty.

Great, I have nothing to feed her.

I checked the cabinets and noticed I still had a box of instant oats left. I made her some and walked back to the living room. She was seated exactly how I left her, I placed the bowl in front of her. She stared at the bowl before looking back at me.

"Eat" I said, motioning to the bowl. She looked down at the bowl before she climbed down from the couch and stepped closer to the table, before looking at me again.

"Go ahead, it's all yours"

She reached for the spoon and slowly lifted it, her hand shaking, half of the oats in the spoon landed on the table.

Smart of you, Abba.

I rolled my eyes at me stupidity, she was probably too weak to feed herself and she was still very young to feed herself properly. I grabbed the bowl and gestured for her to come over.

She approached me cautiously, I lifted her up and sat her down next to me. I lifted the spoon and slowly fed her, spoon by spoon until she had eaten half of the oats in the bowl. I decided to stop so she won't get sick.

Carrying her to the kitchen, I sat her on the island, washing the bowl and using a wet towel to wipe her mouth clean. I leaned against the sink thinking about what next to do. Her eyes were drooping close, I could tell she was tired and needed to sleep.

Might as well get her to bed

I carried her in my arms trying to control myself from retching at the smell coming from her.

I set her down on the bed and walked into my closet to get an undershirt, I got a wet towel from the bathroom and did my best to clean her up before slipping the raggedy gown off her and putting the undershirt on her.

She was asleep by the time I was done, I covered her with the blanket and left the room.

I needed a Roy Rogers.
