Lucky's (Mis)Fortune: CHAPTER THREE

Lucky's (Mis)Fortune (MXMXMXM)

As expected, '304 Maple Street' led me to a mansion. It was huge and beautiful, in a few words. There was a fountain and flowers in the front which was surrounded by gates. All the outside lights were on including some inside the fountain and wow. The things I would do to live in a place like this...

I shook my head when the guard returned, nodding for me to go inside. I mumbled a thank you since the man seemed like he wasn't really listening but I wanted to be polite. I stepped into the beautiful front yard through the gates and I couldn't help but note how fake the grass, trees, and flowers looked. Out of curiosity, I decided to touch one of the planted lilies only to find out that they were actually real. I continued to walk after I was satisfied.

It was a dream of mine to own a house and have a garden up front which I would personally take care of. A safe and pretty front yard where my children would be able to play.

I get the thoughts out of my head when I arrive at the front door where someone was already waiting for me. I swear it took five minutes from the gates to the front door... "Um, Leo-"

"You're Lucky Anderson for an interview for the butler position, right?" A woman who looked around twenty years older than me cut me off, smiling.

I refrain from correcting my name. "Yes," I replied, instead.

"Follow me," she motioned, opening the door, letting me in before she entered and took lead. "I'm Angela. I'm the head of the personnel after Mr. Lewis who will be the one interviewing you. I hope we can work together soon," she said as she stops her tracks in front of her door. I couldn't help but think that there was some trace of pity in her eyes. Why was she pitying me?

I didn't have much time to think before I was pushed inside the room (not literally). "You must be Jordan Anderson?" A man said, standing up from where he was sitting behind a desk, extending his hand at me with a smile. I discarded the thought of telling him a thank you for saying my name before walking over.

I smiled politely back at him. "That's me."

"I'm Luke Lewis but you can call me Mr. Lewis. I will be the one to interview you for the job position."

Mr. Lewis seemed to be around forty-five years old with a few white hairs standing out in the rest of the black, he had stubble, pink lips, light brown eyes, and was only a few inches taller than me. He looked nice enough as well. I was starting to wonder if Leo was just trying to scare me or what he actually meant.

"First off, how old are you, Jordan?"

"I'm 20," I answered with confidence.

"Would you be willing to move here if you were to get contracted?"

I was surprised by the question. Moving into this mansion. "Yes."

"Is there anything that would get in the way of your duties such as family, other business engagements, responsibilities such as kids, and such?"

"No. The only responsibility I have is school and most of my classes are done by three PM."

The interview continued with basic questions I had gone through before. There were a couple of new ones though which I guess are because of the job position. I had never applied to be a butler.

"Would you be willing to risk your life?"

The question got me at the edge of the chair. "What does that mean?" Maybe Leo wasn't playing around with me...

Mr. Lewis smiled. "There have been a lot of robberies in this place. The whole neighborhood, actually. We know how bad those can be."

I didn't relax even after that. I could see that Mr. Lewis was lying to some degree. Then again, I don't have a lot to live for so the answer came easily, "Yes. I'd be willing." I said the answer seriously, I meant it. Mr. Lewis seemed to be satisfied with my answer.

"You can come tomorrow at five PM to sign the contract before bringing your things and settling in." He stood up and I followed. "You're hired, Jordan." He extended his hand toward me.

I hesitantly put my hand on his and shook it. There was something unsettling about this.

-----

Mr. Lewis had offered to drive me home once he found out that I had walked here but I refused until he gave up. I needed the time to think.

The pay that I would get was unbelievable when I took into consideration that I would also get food and a bed. With just two pays, I would be able to pay off the three months of rent I have due and with another, I would have enough for my school fees. God, this was surreal.

Which was the problem.

Things like this don't just happen to me. I'm used to falling and scraping from when I was a little kid and used to getting cheated on from when I was in high school. I'm used to the unfortunate events of my life and it's hard to believe that all of a sudden that will be different. I had a bad feeling.

-----

"I got the job," I told Liam as we ate. He had invited me out again.

"Then why do you look so sullen?" He questioned with his mouth full of food, his eyebrows knitted together.

I grimaced. "Don't talk with your mouth full, Liam." I rolled my eyes at his shrug. "I don't know," I said, answering his question. "It's a job as a butler 45 minutes away. I'm just dreading the walk every day," I easily make up.

"Will I be able to visit you? I've always wanted to see a mansion," he was basically bouncing in his seat.

It was one of those rare moments where I actually wanted to smile. "I would have to ask my boss about that," I tell him with a grin.

"Leo is a hottie isn't he?" He asked in a dreamy tone after a couple of minutes.

"What's with the sudden question?" I decided to not answer his inquiry.

"Oh, because he's over there," he pointed at the counter where he was with two other boys who seemed a couple of years older than him. "And he's accompanied by two other hotties, damn god really has his favorites."

Again, I didn't answer but I let my eyes roam back to the three. I'll admit, they were hot. One of them looked exceptionally tall and I wondered if he would be able to touch the ceiling. Huh, interesting thinking, who knows. I couldn't get a detailed look at their faces but for some reason, they looked familiar. I didn't dwell on it though and went back to talking to Liam.

-----

When I got to the mansion, the guard in front gave me instant access. I still didn't know his name and I still thought that everything he did was robotic. I had seen bodyguards in movies multiple times but I thought that it was an exaggeration when they didn't do anything but stand still with their hands placed one on top of the other and in front of them. I had the curiosity to see him in action but I shook out of my thoughts when I was greeted by Ms. Angelica (she told me to call her that).

On the way to the same room as yesterday, I saw Leo in the living room. My eyes glanced at him but he was too focused on what was going on on the TV for him to notice I was even in the house. I wondered momentarily who was the owner of the property but I didn't have much time before I was in front of the same room as yesterday. I thanked Ms. Angelica for guiding me before knocking on the door to be told to come inside. I turned the knob and pushed it open.

Mr. Lewis was in his seat just like yesterday but I was surprised to see someone occupying one of the chairs in front of his desk. Just by the back of his head, I could tell that it was one of the boys Leo was with earlier today. "Jordan, come in, come in," Mr. Lewis ushered with a smile.

"Nice to see you again, Mr. Lewis," I greeted, grinning back at him.

That must've caught the attention of the other person in the room because he turned around. He had a scowl on his face as if he was being scolded before I came in. I just nodded at him in acknowledgment. He just stared at me.

The longer I looked at his face, the more familiar it became before I put my finger around it. It was the guy that had spilled coffee the other day. I scowled at the memory.

"Jordan, this is the son of the owner of this home, Khael Sawyer."

I sighed, turning to him, trying to be as polite and professional as possible. "Nice to meet you," I said with a tight-lipped smile.

He smirked in return and it's fascinating to say it was even cockier than Leo's. Now that I look at them, I see a resemblance. They both had green eyes and brown hair though the ones of the male in front of me were lighter. They had the same nose, the only huge difference I saw was their lips. Leo's were thinner. "Likewise," he responded.
