With a somewhat awkward laugh, Clara said, “I’m just pretending to be his wife for now! Elio, I’ll explain everything later!”

She quickly winked at Elio, signaling him to get Alex out of there.

Elio instantly understood her meaning.

“Oh, I see! Well, you two must have some important stuff to talk about. I’ll leave you to it. The hospital needs me anyway.”

Just as Elio was about to leave, Emmett suddenly grabbed his arm.

“You haven’t explained what’s going on between you two.”

“Um… about that…” Elio immediately looked to Clara for help.

Clara quickly grabbed Emmett’s arm, “It’s nothing to do with him. If you have questions, ask me! Let him go, he really needs to get going! Isn’t my explanation enough?”

Emmett frowned but didn’t press Elio further.

In the next second, though, he ushered Clara into his car.

He hadn’t slept in a day, and then he arrived to this mess!

This woman owed him a decent explanation.

“Mr. Melendez, it would’ve been nice if you’d given me a heads up before showing up.” Clara laughed awkwardly, but she was truly unsettled.

Emmett scowled. “If I hadn’t come, would you have ended up with that guy? Is he the new Dad you’re considering for Aiden?”

New Dad?

Clara suddenly remembered the text she sent to Aiden.

Did Aiden rat her out?

No way, it must be… “Did you go through Aiden’s phone? Emmett, that’s a total invasion of his privacy!”

“We live together, so why would I need to snoop? Don’t change the subject, and tell me straight, were you planning to be with this guy?”

Clara immediately denied it, “No, I admit that I had considered being with him. Given my situation, it’s good enough just having someone like me. If someone wanted to marry me, that would be even better, I wouldn’t have any reason to refuse! But after some thought, I decided against it. I have a child, and no family would want to accept someone like me!”

“You’re married! And you’re considering marrying another man?!”

“I’m just planning for my future! After all, our marriage isn’t real. Once you don’t need me anymore, I’ll just have to return to my old life, right? Besides… I was just thinking about it!”

Clara eventually gave up on the ideal Why was Emmett still so pissed?
