Chapter 13
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
âThere are loads of jobs out there that can put grub on the table for your kids and pay off your debts, you know. Like AW! Even if you lose the gig at Melendez, youâve always got that. So donât go pinning your hopes on me.â
Emmettâs fingers tapped rhythmically on the desk with a meaningful look in his eyes âAW, huhâ¦â
Claraâs eyes flickered with panic for a moment, but she quickly regained her awkward smile. âBut I really wanna work here, at Melendezâ
âWhy?â
âUm⦠itâs pretty simple!â Clara lightly touched her forehead, her mind spinning. âYouâre my debtor right now. Seeing you every day would constantly remind me of the money I owe you, giving me more motivation to earn money!â
âYou wanna see me every day?â Emmett asked with a meaningful tone.
âYes, but donât get it twisted. I want to see you every day only to remind myself that I still owe you money. I need to work hard to pay off my debt.â Clara raised her finger earnestly in promise. Anyway, she would never work at AW, never face Taylor⦠and she actually thought the Melendez Group was better. Getting into the Melendez Group was her goal after much effort, she couldnât give up on this job.
Seeing Emmett still not agreeing, Clara started to get anxious. âMr. Melendez, trust me. I can bring unforeseen profits to Melendez, thereâs definitely room for me to shine⦠If you think I canât, you can fire me on the spot once Iâve paid off your debt! At that timeâ¦.â Anyway, she would stay as long as she could.
âDeal.â
She hadnât finished speaking when she heard Emmettâs low voice.
âYou mean⦠deal?â Clara couldnât believe her ears, wondering if she heard wrong.
âMy personal secretaryâ
âPersonal⦠secretary?â Clara looked puzzled, âBut⦠but I applied for the position of secretary to the branch managerâ¦
âThis is the only position you can hold at Melendez. You have ten seconds to consider.â
Emmett didnât plan to explain much to her. He kept this woman just to let the outside rumors fade away on their own. He raised his wrist to check the time for a moment, he spoke in a low voice, Timeâs up.
You can leave now.â
âNo!â Clara quickly explained, âI agree!â She lowered her eyes. It didnât matter who she worked for as a secretary anyway. She just didnât expect Emmett to directly propose that she work as his personal secretary. It was a shock, not a rejection.
âTomorrow morning at nine, report here.â Emmettâs deep gaze lifted to look at her, his tone still indifferent.
âNo problem.â Clara answered decisively. As long as she wasnât fired, she would definitely cherish this job opportunity. Ha, she was already feeling excited about her repayment plan. What a great idea, killing two birds with one stone.
âI donât like lateness, nor do I like my secretary being tied up with personal matters.â Emmett added expressionlessly.
âDonât worry, Mr. President. I always put my work first. Unless itâs about my son, nothing else is more important than my work. I promise.â
âYou can leave now!â Emmett just turned his chair around, leaving her with an unresponsive silhouette.
