Chapter 21
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
The kindergarten was just in sight, the rain outside had lightened up, and the road conditions had improved a lot Emmett gradually slowed down his car Emmett asked, âWhereâs the kidâs father?â
âHuh?â
The question caught Clara by surprise she was at a loss for words.
âI mean, why is the kid with you? Why cant his father pick him up?â
Emmett glanced at her noticing her rigid expression, and decided to rephrase his question in a gentler way.
âHeClara was a bit evasive her voice slightly heavy âHe hes passed away Clara made up an excuse. She couldnât tell Emmett that she had no idea who the childâs father was She didnât want to arouse suspicion about herself or Alex. She could bear everything, but the child was innocent Emmett responded, âDid he really pass away or are you hiding something?â
Clara sand Really really heâs gone!â
âapologize for bringing up your painâ
Emmett apologized softly, and Clara answered awkwardly. âItâs okay It was okay After all, she was making it up! The childâs father to her, was as good as dead anyway!
The car stopped at the kindergarten gate Emmett got out of the car with her Clara panicked and quickly stepped in front of Emmett, âMr Melendez, itâs getting late. You should go back I can go in myselfâ
She saw that Emmett seemed to want to go in with her, which made her a bit nervous Apart from her two closest friends, she didnât want anyone to see Alex She worried that Emmett might know the relatives of that man. If so, she could lose everything âitâs still rainingâ
Emmett furrowed his brows with sympathy in his eyes. He felt that after he had asked about her and her childâs situation, he should give them a nde home.
âOh! Itâs okay, my son loves rainy days. After I pick him up, we can take a walk around. He especially loves splashing in puddles Clara came up with another excuse with a smile âYou donât have an umbrellaââ
âI do, seeing the cloudy weather this morning, I brought an umbrella for my son. Itâs enough for both of us. Mr. Melendez, you should go back to your familyâ
Seeing that Emmett had moved forward a few steps, Clara quickly stepped in front of him with a smile.
Emmett stared at her, didnât say anything but felt suspicious about what she had just said and did.
Ding dingâ
He was about to say something else but his phone suddenly rang in his pocket. He checked the message and put the phone back in his pocket, saying, âI have some things to deal with, you go ahead.
Take this umbrella Emmett handed his umbrella to Clara, then turned around and got back in the car. Clearly, he didnât completely believe Claraâs claim that she had an umbrellaâ.
Clara watched Emmettâs retreating figure, her facial expression still a bit stiff So, was her lie just found out? Was her lie really that awful?
