Clara Calloway was startled and immediately looked up. “When did you get here? Why didn’t you make a sound?”

“It’s just that you were so engrossed in your work, you didn’t notice me Clara waved the blueprint in her hand, “I’m just interested’ Suddenly not having to draw designs, it feels a bit off”

Emmett raised an eyebrow, “Do you need me to get you more tasks then?”

“No need for now! I want to see the result after the review.” Clara gave a bitter smile, “Although finishing the design made me feel accomplished, realized I’ve been neglecting the kids! I’ve been busy at work in the company. Even when I get home, I get straight back to work. I’ve had no time for Aiden and Alex! I feel guilty”

Emmett smiled, “They’re lucky to have a mother like you.” After all, a stepmother doing this much, that was pretty impressive.

Clara gave an awkward smile, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes.

“I’m the lucky one to have those two smart kids! They’ve given me so much inspiration and enriched my life.”

“What about me?” Emmett moved close to her face, pulling her into his arms.

Clara instinctively struggled a bit, fearing he’d do something inappropriate in the office.

The box of birth control pills suddenly fell out of her bag!

Emmett’s gaze followed, his brows furrowing immediately.

“You’re in such a hurry: you even went to get these.”

Clara quickly picked them up, giving an awkward chuckle, “I saw a drugstore on the way, so I bought them…”

Emmett immediately let go of her, fixing his tie, he muttered, “I have a meeting, I gotta go.”

With that, he walked away without any hesitation.

Clara looked at the box of pills in her hand, letting out a helpless sigh. She saw Emmett s disappointment. But what could she do about it!

Sometimes, Clara really wanted to just blurt out the truth to Emmett! But then, she’d involve Elio Milburn, even the whole Milburn family!

Elio had lied to help her, and Leah was Elio’s relative. If Emmett did a little investigation, everything would be exposed. By then, even if Emmett didn’t lash out at her, it would put Elio in a tight spot.

Sometimes she regretted getting Elio involved. Now he was living on edge like her, afraid that any little mistake could bring disaster to the whole family.

Clara sighed, taking a sip of water, then turned back to her chair. Although she knew it would upset Emmett, now was really not the time to have kids.

Just as she swallowed the pill, her phone rang. Clara glanced at it, it was Leah calling. Hesitating for a moment, she answered. “What’s up?”

“Clara, Elio’s back in the country, did you know?”

“Elio’s back?” Clara was taken aback, “He didn’t tell me! Is something wrong?”

Leah smiled, “Nothing’s wrong I just missed you and wanted to see you! Are you free tonight? We can have dinner together.”

“I need to go home to be with the kids tonight.” Clara frowned, checking the time, “But, I’ll give him a call”

“Great! You two get in touch then! If you two want to meet alone, I won’t disturb you guys
