Clara approached Emmett’s office door and took a deep breath.

Before she even got the chance to knock, the office door swung open.

Emmett glanced at her, his lips parting slightly. “Come in.”

Clara nodded and followed him in.

Emmett closed the door and settled back into his chair.

“Where did you go?”

“I went to buy skin toner.” Clara felt a sense of guilt as soon as she lied, especially after Emmett’s query. She was even more unsettled.

“Skin toner? Why did you go shopping without telling me? Also, when did you leave, where did you go, and which mall did you buy from?”

Clara felt flustered by his questions and kept her head down. “At the specialty counter in the mall across the street… Emmett, did I upset you? I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have gone out during work hours!”

“You should know that’s not what I’m asking.”

“I will definitely not go out suddenly like this again; I’ll definitely call you the next time I leave the office.”

“So who did you meet this time?” Emmett’s face darkened.

Clara knew she couldn’t hide it anymore; she had to tell the truth, “Elio.”

“Elio?” Emmett frowned and stood up straight from his chair. “Isn’t he abroad? How come he’s back all of a sudden?”

“I’m not sure why he came back! He just called me, said he wanted to see me, said he was sick in the hospital with no one to care for him, so I…”

“So you went to take care of him?”

“No, I just went to take a look! I was gone for less than two hours in total; it takes an hour to go back and forth to Belevolence Hospital.” Emmett was clearly still unsatisfied, but looking at her demeanor, she probably wasn’t lying.

“I know!” Clara said helplessly, “But Elio really helped me a lot in the past; without him, I might not have made it till today! In my eyes, he’s my lifesaver; there’s nothing going on between us!”

“But you said before you wouldn’t see him again!”

“What would you do if it was you?”

Emmett looked at her and said, “Even if I had to go, I would tell you!”

“But you would still get angry, right?” Clara whispered, “If I didn’t tell you, if you didn’t find out, then I wouldn’t have made you angry, and you wouldn’t know about this. Today we could all stay in a good mood.”

Emmett was almost infuriated by her logic.

“You really have your own way of thinking!”

“I’m sorry…” Clara immediately apologized.

Emmett rubbed his forehead. “Forget it, you went to see Elio; what’s wrong with him? Elio is a doctor himself; why would he need you to when he’s sick?”
