In the cafe, Leah walked in and immediately pulled out a chair for Sophia, showing extreme respect.

“Sweetie, you don’t have to do all this! We’re just here for a chat; you’re making me blush!”

Leah chuckled, “I feel a deep connection with you and I greatly value our relationship!”

“Wow! How come you’re so different from that other guy with the same last name?”

“What did you say?”

“Nothing!” Sophia waved her hand, “I heard this coffee shop has great coffee; I’ve been wanting to check it out. I didn’t expect you to read my mind!”

A spark of light flashed in Leah’s eyes, yet she maintained her respectful smile and said, “You casually mentioned that you like coffee during our brief chat last time, so I picked this well-reviewed place.”

“You’re so thoughtful! I just said it in passing, yet you took it to heart.” Sophia looked at Leaḥ, nodding in satisfaction, “If my son could find a wife like you, I’d ask for nothing more. I worry about him every day.”

She let out a deep sigh after saying that.

Leah asked purposefully, “The last time we talked, you mentioned that your daughter-in-law wasn’t treating your grandson well?”

“She’s not terrible, but I always feel like she’s pretending!” The very thought of Clara made Sophia frown, “How could a stepmother be sø loving, so affectionate? It’s completely illogical! I always feel like she’s just putting on a show for my son or trying to trick me! I’m getting old, and I have to think about my grandchildren. They’re young! If I’m not around one day, and nobody’s got their back, and my son is still head over heels for that woman, what will happen to my grandkids? Have you seen those news stories? Stepmothers were abusing children, and even the biological fathers did nothing! I’m terrified.”

“Exactly! I see those news stories all the time! And your concerns are totally justified! A stepmother can’t be as loving as a real one.”

Sophia sipped her coffee, “Now when I talk to my son about these things, he defends that woman like a madman. Can I trust him? He’s willing to fall out with me, his own mother, for her. When I’m gone, can he suddenly change for the sake of his children? I think that woman is just waiting for the day to come!

She pretends to be a good mother now, creating an illusion that she has no ulterior motives and treats the kids well. But once I’m gone, she’ll seize power!”

“Ah, people can be unpredictable!”

“Indeed!”

“Do you…want to bring back the children’s biological mother?”

Sophia hesitated momentarily, then nodded, “Yes, Thave such a thought! But I know my son will definitely object! That woman completely bewitches him.”

“Don’t worry too much! There’s always a solution for this.” Leah knew she shouldn’t push too hard to avoid arousing suspicion, so she changed the subject, “Here, try this! I bought some pastries, and you can take some home for your grandkids later.”
