Chapter 299
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
âI havenât made up my mind yet; Iâm just saying. Donât get your panties in a twist over it. Iâm just letting them meet. I didnât say sheâs gonna tie the knot with our family or anything.â
âMmmâ¦â
Sophia pursed her lips, âLook, I may not be your biggest fan, but for the sake of my son, Iâll accept you as his wife. As long as you donât stick your nose in our business too much or fill my sonâs head with unnecessary nonsense, you can keep playing house with him.â
Clara just kept her head down and continued her breakfast, not giving her the satisfaction of a response.
Sophia took Claraâs silence as acceptance of her words, which pleased her. After all, it could push her plans forward.
After breakfast, she headed to the office.
Clara had been in the office for a while before Emmett finally showed up.
There was an urgent meeting first thing in the moming at the company, so Emmett barely had a break before he had to get back to the grind.
Seeing Emmett looking beat, Clara stood up and led him to sit down on the couch, âYou look beat. Why donât you take a breather? Mattâs coming to see you in a bit.
Iâll let him know.â
Emmett waved her off, âItâs cool. I gotta be at the quarterly meeting today. The company found some discrepancies in the books. If I donât take it seriously now, it might set a bad precedent.â
Clara began massaging his shoulders casually, âSo, did you figure out who screwed up the accounts yet?â
âIâve got Matt on it. Heâs been digging into a few people for me lately. Iâm sure heâll get to the bottom of it soon.â
Clara chuckled, then said, âOh, speaking of which, I have a friend I need to meet today. Sheâs a girl, and sheâs feeling down and wants to chat. Can I go see her for a bit?â
Emmett eyed her, âYou sure itâs a âsheâ friend?â
âAbsolutely! If you donât believe me, I can have her talk to you.â
Emmett pulled her into his arms, âWell, if you say so, I trust you. You wouldnât cheat on me. I mean, come on, with a catch like me, who else would you even look at?â
Clara laughed at his comment, âI wonder who was the one getting all jealous back then, couldnât even stand me looking at other guys.â
âThatâs different! Even now, Iâd get mad if you look at other guys. You should only have eyes for me!â
Clara said helplessly, âOnly you! Look at me. If Iâm not working, Iâm helping you schedule stuff. When do I have time to look at other guys? Besides, theyâre nowhere near as good-looking as you.â
Emmett nodded in satisfaction, âKeep saying stuff like that. I love to hear it.â
âSo, can I go see my friend or what?â
âCan I even say no at this point? I was hoping to have lunch with you, but if youâve got plans, thatâs fine. Just try to come back early. Want me to have Matt drop you off?â
âNo need; I drove myself today.â
âOh.â Emmett looked at her, then suddenly asked, âBy the way, did my mother give you a hard time this morning? Or say anything to you?â
Clara shook her head, âNope, she was just chatting with her two grandsons. I grabbed something to eat and came to work.â â
Emmett knew she might be lying because he knew his mother too well. If he wasnât home, she might give Clara a hard time.
Suddenly, Emmett gripped her hand tightly, and while looking at her with a serious look, he said, âWhatever my mother says, it doesnât represent what I think. We share different opinions.â
