Chapter 300
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
Clara was a bit taken aback by his sudden seriousness, then she smiled.
âI get it. Iâve been with you for so long. If I still donât get your character, wouldnât I be a complete dunce?â
âAs long as you get it. I need to head back to the office. You should go and come back early. Iâll come home with you tonight. I want to show you our new house. Iâve had Ricardo prepare everything. Itâs not far from the beach.â
Clara was itching with anticipation at this. She absolutely adored beach houses.
Living in such a house, when she was feeling down or had something on her mind, she could just step outside, feel the sand under her feet, and gaze at the boundless sea. This was the kind of house she always dreamt of having.
âGreat!â
Emmett gave a slight nod, then left his office.
Once she was sure he was gone, Clara took out her phone and dialed a number. The other party picked up.
âHello, Clara.â
It was Leah Calloway!
âWhatâs up? I want to meet with you. Right now!â
âWhatâs the rush? Something happen?â
âIâd rather tell you in person.â
Clara walked over to the window and looked outside.
Leah seemed to sense something was wrong, paused for a few seconds, and then said, âAll right, letâs meet at our usual spot.â
âOkay!â
After hanging up, Clara grabbed her bag and left the office, driving to the agreed-upon meeting place.
As she pushed open the door, she saw Leah sitting by the window, marking up some documents.
Clara walked over, and Leah looked up, saying, âClara, you got here so fast? I thought you might be late because of the traffic. I didnât drive; I took the subway.â
Clara wasnât in the mood for small talk. She sat down and asked straight away, âDid you meet with Emmettâs mother?â
Leah was taken aback, âEmmettâs mother? How could I have met her? Iâve never been to the Melendez family.â
Clara frowned, âOh, are you going to play dumb? She already told me.â
âTold you what?â Leah shrugged innocently, âClara, I have no idea what youâre talking about. What about Emmettâs mother?â
âStop playing dumb!â
âI really donât know! Iâve been so busy lately, you see, I even brought my documents for our meeting! Is there a misunderstanding?â
âMisunderstanding? Do you think Iâm that easy to fool? Youâve been meeting with Emmettâs mother behind my back, havenât you? What are you up to?â
Leah threw up her hands in exasperation, âWait a minute, I donât understand why youâre suddenly accusing me?â
âQuit playing innocent!â
Leah took a deep breath, âYou guys had me pretend to be Alex and Aidenâs mother, and I helped. Now youâre saying I contacted Emmettâs mother on my own? I really didnât do anything.â
âAre you telling the truth?â
âOf course! Could it be that Emmettâs mother mistook me for the boysâ mom?â
Claraâs eyebrows knitted together. That might be possible.
âClara, believe me, I really didnât do anything. If I did, what would be my motive? How could I possibly want to replace you?â
Clara looked into her eyes; she didnât seem to be lying.
But all these coincidences made it hard for her to believe it was just a coincidence.
âDo you remember that bakery? Emmettâs mother likes to buy pastries from there.â
