Chapter 301
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
Leah blinked, suddenly understanding, âOh, you mean the lady whoâs always decked out in designer gear?â
âYes! Sheâs Emmettâs mother.â
Leah nearly jumped out of her seat, âHoly cow! What a coincidence! I swear, I had no clue, and I only had a bit of small talk with her.â
While she was speaking, Clara was watching her, feeling that she didnât seem to be lying.
âOnce, I bought all the pastries, and she couldnât get any, so I gave her some. Thatâs all we talked about.â
âMm-hmmâ¦â Clara nodded.
âI can still go buy pastries after work, right? Bumping into her was totally unexpected. If it bothers you, I wonât go there anymore, okay?â
âItâs not that serious!â
Leahâs face showed a hint of annoyance. âI find this whole thing baffling. Even if you suspect me, I need a motive! What do I gain from getting close to Emmettâs mother? I told you before, I have someone I like. Besides, you and Emmett already have a kid. I couldnât be clearer about that.â
Clara bit her lip, opened her mouth, but didnât say anything.
âAnd why would I, an unmarried woman, have any thoughts about him? Despite his wealth and power, we have nothing in common!â
Clara frowned. She had to admit that Leah had a point.
âIâm sorry, I might have been too impulsive. My apologies.â
=
1 Leah acted innocent. âClara, I canât accept your apology. I feel insulted. Iâve always treated you like my best friend!â
âIâm sorryâ¦â
-4 2 âAfter I came back home, youâre the only one I could talk to about my feelings. But you think Iâm scheming against you, that Iâm trying to steal your husband. Thatâs just absurd!â
With that, she stood up to leave. Clara hurried after her, âI apologize. I misunderstood you in a moment of impulsivenessâ¦â
Leah pretended to be very upset, opened her mouth, but swallowed her wordsâ¦
âNevermind, I know Emmett is great, and your concerns are normal. I should be more understanding.
Life in high society is tough. Just stop suspecting me, thatâs all!â
Clara clenched her fingers. âMm-hmmâ¦â
âDonât worry; Iâll never go to that pastry shop again. If Emmettâs mom contacts me, I wonât reply. Can you trust me now?â
Clara was a bit embarrassed by her wordsâ¦.
She realized she might have jumped to conclusions without any solid evidence, which wasnât fair to Leah.
Leah patted her hand. âClara, is that all there is? If thereâs nothing else, Iâll head back to the office.â
Clara nodded slightly, âAll right. Iâm really sorry about today. Also, could you not tell your cousin about this? I worry he might get upset, considering heâs always been so good to me, and now Iâm suspecting his cousinâ¦â
âDonât worry! I get it, and itâs not a big deal.â
Leah even smiled at her, comforting her, âIâm not the kind to make a big fuss over small things. Whatâs past is past. Your trust is more important than anything else. Back home, youâre my only good friend.
We still have plenty of time to hang out together!â
Clara said, âAll right.â
Leah took a deep breath and started heading for the door.
Suddenly, she turned back to Clara, âBy the way, since Emmettâs mom has said so much, does she know who I really am? If she continues investigating⦠will she discover my fake identity?â
