Chapter 309
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
But now that Elioâs life was on the line, Clara couldnât give a damn about Emmettâs potential wrath.
Clara grabbed her bag and bolted. She didnât even make it to the front door before running into Ricardo. âWhere are you off to in such a rush, Ms. Calloway?â
âIâve got stuff to deal with. A friend of mine is sick; Iâve gotta go see him.â
Ricardo eyed her panicked expression, âWant me to tell Mr. Melendez? He knows a bunch of top-notch doctors, so he might be able to help.â
Clara knew what he was getting at. She hesitated for a moment, then blurted out to Ricardo, âItâs a guy friend Iâm going to see. If you donât want Mr. Melendez to blow a fuse, you better keep it to yourself!â
âA guy friend?â
âDonât worry, Iâm not gonna betray Mr. Melendez! But the guy once did me a favor, so Iâve gotta return his kindness!â
Ricardo was taken aback, obviously not anticipating such bluntness from Clara, leaving him stuck between a rock and a hard place.
But if Mr. Melendez finds out, Iâm toast!â
âRelax. If you donât tell him anything, he wonât know. Letâs keep this under wraps. Iâll be back as soon as I finish lending my friend a hand.â
âAlright then.â
Ricardo nodded; after all, Clara had made things pretty clear.
âIf Mr. Melendez comes looking for me, youâve gotta get a hold of me right away. Iâll be back ASAP!
Can you smooth things over and buy me some time?â
âAlrightâ¦â
Clara hightailed it to Elioâs place in her car. But when she got there, she found the door locked.
She knocked, but no one answered, so she quickly dialed Elioâs number.
The phone just kept ringing, but no one picked up.
She could faintly hear a ringtone from inside.
So was Elio really home?
Clara pounded on the door, âElio! Elio! Open up! Wake up, Elio!â
Just as she was about to call the police, the door opened.
Clara stood there, surprised, looking at Elio, who had just opened the door. He didnât look like he had passed out.
âYou called me⦠you said you were on your last legs.â
âThatâs right! Iâm at the end of my rope.â Elio grabbed her arm, âClara, youâve got to come with me today!â
âWhat are you talking about?â Clara instinctively backed away, feeling that something was off.
âIâm leaving, and you have to come with me!â
âWhy? Iâm married to Emmett; I canât go with you. Elio, I know I owe you big time, but I canât repay you like this.â
Elio held her hand tightly, âYou donât have a choice! Youâre here now, and I canât let you go.â
Clara struggled, trying to pull her hand free, âElio, have you lost your marbles? Let go of me! Iâm not going with you! I wonât!â
âWhether you like it or not, Iâve gotta do this!â Elio squinted, âIâm sorry, Clara. Whether you hate me or curse me, I donât have a choice!â
Clara saw him pull out a cloth, covering her mouth and nose.
She wanted to say something, but suddenly everything went black, and she lost consciousness.
After several rounds of meetings, Emmett was wiped. Even though he had been sitting, his back and legs were killing him.
