“Knock it off, Elio! Can you let me go?”

When she heard that Emmett was looking for her, her heart seemed to suddenly come alive again. She didn’t want to wait any longer; she wanted to see Emmett right now.

But then, Elio burst out laughing, “You don’t actually think Emmett’s looking for you to give you a happy life, do you? Check this out.”

He handed her his phone.

On it was the rumor about Clara and Elio.

Clara was shocked, “What is this? You and I… how could…”

“This is Leah’s doing. If I didn’t do it, she would kill my parents. This news caused quite a stir, so Emmett must’ve seen it! Do you think he, a man who’s lived a comfortable life since he was born, would accept being betrayed?”

Clara clenched her fists in anger and said, “Elio, how could you do this to me? I trusted you, and this is what I get!”

“I’m sorry. You can blame me all you want. I accept it. But I really had no other choice! If you were in my shoes, what would you do? I couldn’t just sit back and watch my parents die, could I?”

Clara was stunned. She found herself unable to speak.

After a long while, her shoulders slumped in despair as she asked, “Is this photo real?”

“What?”

“Did you and I… did we really…?”

Elio opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Elio sensed her distress and quickly tried to calm her down, “Cool it!”

With that, she reached for the car door.

Fortunately, Elio was quick to react and stopped her.

“Are you out of your mind? We’re on a highway; if you jump out now, it’s game over!”

“Do you think I want to live anymore?”

“…But what about your two kids?”

Clara froze.

“Aren’t you worried that Leah will take your place and abuse your two sons?” Elio was genuinely afraid she would do something reckless, so he hurriedly added.

Mentioning Aiden and Alex, Clara started to worry.

“Knowing Leah, she would definitely harm the two kids! If she ends up having Emmett’s baby, then Aiden and Alex are screwed. And she’s so good at pretending, Leah won’t be exposed easily,”

Seeing her starting to calm down a bit, Elio immediately clung to her clothes. “I know I messed up. You can yell at me; you can even hit me. If you feel bad, you can cry, but please don’t do anything reckless, okay? You can punish me however you want; just don’t hurt yourself!”

After a while, Clara suddenly laughed, but it was a sorrowful laugh.

“Everything you say is for my benefit! Elio, I should be thanking you!”

Elio had never seen Clára like this before; her gaze frightened him. “Don’t say that, I beg you! I’m not a human, and I’m heartless and ungrateful; I deserve to be punished. Hit me!” With that, Elio grabbed her hand and smacked it against his face.
