Clara suddenly chuckled and said, “You wanna know why?”

“Why?” Elio raised an eyebrow.

“I tested the waters with Emmett before. He said he can’t stand being fooled. Plus, Emmett’s had a beef with you already. I was afraid that if I spilled the beans, you and your family would get dragged into it.”

Elio didn’t expect that to be the reason…

“Emmett’s always been steadfast. He won’t let you off easily. At the very least, the Milburn family has totally pissed off Emmett. I didn’t want to get you in trouble because of my issues.”

Elio took a step back, “So you kept quiet because of me? Because you were afraid that I’d get backlashed by Emmett?”

2 “I wouldn’t put it all that way… I believe you helped me out of pity at first, out of kindness. No matter what happened later, I remember you were ready to help me without hesitation.”

After hearing Clara’s words, Elio was deeply moved.

“Without you, Alex and I couldn’t have lived that peaceful life for so long. I would probably be moping around, missing my two kids, even considering ending my life… It was because of you, because of Alex, that I kept going.”
