“Like this, I might let your two kids off the hook. Maybe even help bring your whole family back together! Aside from Emmett, your two sons isn’t worth jack to me, don’t you think?”

Clara bit her lip and said, “You just want me to leave Emmett, right?”

“Bingo! I never really planned to put you guys in mortal danger. I’ve told you before that you should be with Elio and not try to take Emmett from me. That’s not your place! The mistress of the Melendez family shouldn’t be you. I’m just trying to set the record straight here, don’t you think?”

Clara furrowed her brows, trying to keep her voice steady and calm.

What she needed then was to figure out exactly what Leah wanted from her.

“If I make Emmett utterly disappointed in me, you’ll give him the antidote and let my kids go?”

“Sure thing! But you better not try to pull a fast one on me. If I catch wind of any trickery, you’re the one who’s going to pay!”

“Fine… I agree! I’ll call Emmett right away. I’ll keep the call on record so you can hear. How’s that?”

Leah chuckled coldly, “Recording? You think I’ll trust that? From now on, your phone can’t be hung up;

you use another phone to call Emmett. I want to hear him lose all hope in you myself!”

Clara glanced at Elio. Her fingers were digging deep into her palm.

“But you gotta let me think about how to talk to Emmett and how to make him utterly disappointed.”

“The news thing is ready-made, isn’t it? I’ve laid the path for you; you just have to say you and Elio are together now. Tell him that those photos are real and that you guys have been sneaking around. He won’t doubt you!”

After a few seconds of silence, Clara suddenly laughed, startling Leah across from her.

“What are you laughing at?”

“I’m laughing at how stupid I was. I totally fell for your tricks! I can’t believe I didn’t see your huge ambition. I didn’t realize you were using me from the start!”

“I can’t blame you! If you had seen through me, where would that leave me?”

“Fine, fine, I’ll call him now! Since I’ve lost to you, I have to admit it! But you have to keep your word;

you can’t harm Emmett!”

“Of course not. If he dies, what’s the point of all this?”

Clara put down her phone, looked up at Elio, and asked, “Are there any other phones around?”

Elio frowned, “Are you really going to do this? If you do, you and Emmett…”

“We’re out of options. If following Leah’s advice can save my two kids, I’ll do it! It’s the best choice.”

At that point, all Elio could do was agree, “There’s a landline in the living room.”

Clara picked up her phone and headed back to the living-room. She started dialing Emmett’s number.

Each digit pressed felt like a stab to her heart, the pain spreading throughout her body, almost making her pass out.
