Chapter 368
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
In that moment, Clara realized that somehow Emmett had become the man she deeply loved. He was part of her, woven into her very being. Leaving him then would have been like losing half her life!
The phone rang twice before Emmettâs deep voice answered.
âWhoâs this?â
Clara opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
How long had it been since she had heard his voice?
Sheâd been dying to hear his voice, to connect with him every single day. But then she had to break things off with him.
Emmett mustâve sensed something. He asked, âClara? Is that you?â
âYesâ¦â Clara bit her lip, âItâs me.â
âClara, where are you? Tell me, Iâll come find you right now!â
âNo need! I just heard youâre looking for Elio.â Clara clutched her chest, trying to sound firmer and hide her feelings from him.
âOf course I am! He took you away; how else am I going to find you?â
Clara closed her eyes, âCan you stop looking? Weâve eloped!â
âWhat? Eloped?â Emmettâs voice rose, âClara, did Elio force you to do this? Tell me!â
âNo, he didnât force me! You know, I always wanted to be with him. Being with you recently made me more certain that weâre not meant to be. I miss the days with Elio abroad, so Iâve decided to give up on you and choose him. â¦â
âStop! I donât believe a word youâre saying!â Emmett yelled over the phone, âTell me where you are! I want to see you!â
âWhy would you want to see me? I donât want to see you. Iâve made it clear. Why are you still clinging on?â Clara couldnât hold back anymore. Her hands clenched the phone tightly, âDonât you get it? I was in agony being with you. I was forced to marry you. You never asked if I wanted to!â
Emmett roared through the phone, âI donât care. Tell me where you are!â
âDonât command me around! Emmett, can you act like a real man for once? We agreed on a sham marriage/but you forced me into a real one! I even fled abroad, and you still dragged me back! You have zero respect for me. How could I ever love you?â
There was silence on Emmettâs end.
After a few seconds, he spoke in a low voice, âIs everything you said true? You never loved me? Not even a little bit?â
âThatâs right! I hate your selfishness, your authoritarianism, and your habit of making decisions for me.
And more than anything, I hate playing stepmom to your two kids!â
The air seemed to freeze. Even Elio didnât say a word.
Clara glanced at Elio, lifted her chin, and forced back the tears welling in her eyes.
In that moment, she felt her heart shattering.
She knew it was over between her and Emmett. They could never be together again! Maybe Leah was right. She never shouldâve held unrealistic expectations in the first place.
