Chapter 384
Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
Aiden abruptly turned to Alex. âHold that thought. Iâve got a question for you. Do you know who the lady was who rescued us last time?â
âNot really sure.â Alex said as he scratched his head in frustration. âAll I know is that she was hired by Mr. Milburn. Mom even asked me to tell Dad that sheâs actually my biological mother. I donât know much else. But I did notice she seemed to get along well with Grandma last time I saw them together, so Iâm wondering if sheâs trying to marry our dad.â
Aiden nodded. âI had the same inkling. But she did save us. If we guess wrong, we might hurt her.
Maybe we should just observe for a while longer.â
Alex suddenly stood up and took a few steps back as a look of bewilderment appeared on his face.
âWhat are you saying? What do you mean âobserve for a while longerâ? Are you ready to accept another woman to replace Mom?â
âThatâs not what I meant. Let me explain.â
âI donât want to hear it! Weâve gone through all of this so Mom could come back, not so some other woman could take her place. If you can accept that, then let another woman be your mom! I canât accept it; Iâm leaving!â
As Alex moved to leave, Aiden quickly grabbed him.
âCan you not be so impulsive? When did I ever say I didnât want Mom?â
âBut you just implied that youâre giving up!â
âI didnât say that; I just said we canât act recklessly. Running away from home to find Dad last time already caused a lot of trouble, donât you remember?â
Alex pouted and fell silent.
Aiden felt a headache coming on. âOur main focus right now should be finding out why Mom and Dad had a fight. Only then can we find a solution.â
âWhy did they fight? Werenât they fine before? Was it really because of Mr. Milburn?â Alex frowned.
âThen Iâll go find Mr. Milburn. He can clear things up with Dad.â
âIâm afraid itâs not as simple as you think.â
Aiden sighed, wishing he were an adult so he could do more.
Just as Alex was about to say something, there was a knock on the door, and Aiden quickly went to answer it.
It was Sophia. She had a box of pastries in her hands and smiled at Aiden. âWhat are you two up to?â
âWe were just reading.â
Aiden quickly invited her in and shot Alex a look, signaling for him to keep quiet about their earlier conversation.
Sophia set the pastries on the table. âAiden, I bought these especially for you two. You must be starving. Youâve both been through a lot and lost so much weight. My poor babies.â
Alex walked over but didnât show the same enthusiasm he had for his grandmother before. He silently sat down and picked up a pastry without saying a word.
Sophia noticed his displeasure and asked, âWhatâs wrong? Alex, are you not feeling well? You must tell me!â
âIâm fine.â Alex didnât look up and didnât even want to eat the pastry anymore, putting it back on the plate.
Seeing this, Aiden quickly stepped in to smooth things over. âAlex might have caught a cold when we were kidnapped. Heâs been a bit quiet these past few days.
