Two Times The Charm Novel (Clara and Emmett)
With a charming smile, Leah nodded. âThanks for setting this up, Sophia. I wonât let you down.â
When Clara returned to the maidâs quarters, she barely stepped in before Rose shrieked, âOh my gosh!
What happened to your face? Itâs so swollen!â
Hearing the voices, Clara finally came back to her senses, touching her swollen cheek.
âOuchâ¦â
âGood heavens! Did the butler hit you? He has no right to raise his hand! Come, Iâll confront him for you,â Rose declared, heading towards the door.
Clara quickly pulled her back!
âNo need, it wasnât the butler. I⦠accidentally ran into a wall.â
Rose frowned, puzzled, âHow could you hit your face on a wall?â
Clara was silent.
Faced with such a persistent questioner, Clara was embarrassed.
âI⦠I just ran into the wall, thatâs all⦠Donât you have anything else to do?â she quickly changed the subject, fearing Rose would obsess over her injury.
âNothing else to do.â Rose seemed to realize something. She sighed softly before saying, I have some anti-swelling cream. It should help ease the pain.â
Clara smiled gratefully, âThank you.â
She carefully applied the cream on Claraâs face, then went to the kitchen and got a bag of ice for her to use as a cold compress.
âYou really donât have to be so nice to me. Iâm not Mrs. Melendez anymore.â
âEven if youâre not Mrs. Melendez, youâre still my roommate! We have to live together,â Rose smiled, squinting her eyes, âI know, rich young masters pamper their women when theyâre interested and discard them when they lose interest. Thatâs how they always portray it in the movies!â
Clara was taken aback, then laughed at Roseâs comment. She then said seriously, âBut Emmett is not like that. We just have some misunderstandingsâ¦â
Rose tilted her head, puzzled, âIf you know itâs a misunderstanding, why canât you clear it up?â
Thatâs the problem.â Seeing that Rose couldnât understand, Clara smiled, âHave you ever been in love?â
Rose shook her head, âNo, Iâve been working for the Melendez family for two years now. I want to earn some money for my brotherâs wedding, then think about myself. My mom says Iâm a girl, and I donât need to rush to find a boyfriend. I can get married anytime.â
Clara felt a pang of sympathy for the naive young girl in front of her. âDo you have any paper and pen?â
âPaper and pen?â Rose was stunned, âYes, I do!â
âCan I have them?â
âOf course.â Rose quickly got up and rummaged under the bed for a notebook and some ballpoint pens, âWhat do you need them for?â
âI like to draw designs,â Clara smiled.
âYou can draw designs?â Rose looked at her admiringly, âI dropped out after middle school. Do you look down on me?â
âNot at all! Education only represents a personâs qualifications. Nothing more! Youâre so kind. How could I think ess of you?â
Rose smiled sweetly, âThatâs good to hear was so nervous when I found out that weâd be sharing a room. Earlier, when we were cleaning the backyard, someone warned me to be careful of you. They said if I wasnât careful, I might offend you. Then, if you and the young master got back together, I might be driven out of the Melendez family.â
