At night, Clara put Alex to bed, then went to the courtyard for a walk to clear her head.

“Why don’t you get some sleep too? Look at you, you’re as pale as a ghost!”

I can’t sleep. Clara couldn’t hide her pain, “When I close my eyes, all I see is the Melendez family taking Alex!”

“Clara…” Elio walked over, hesitated, then slowly said, “Have you thought about another way? You could be honest with the Melendez family Maybe they’ll let you keep them because you’re their mother? Or, you could possibly marry into the Melendez family.”

Clara interrupted immediately, “I don’t want to be part of the Melendez family! So that’s out of the question! You know how small the chance is that I get custody.”

“Why not give it a try? Maybe Mr. Melendez will take a liking to you? Then you could be with both Aiden and Alex!”

Although he really didn’t want Clara to go down that path, it didn’t seem like a bad idea right now.

At least it would keep the kids safe, and she and Alex wouldn’t have to keep hiding.
