Chapter 10
Fall For My Ex's Mafia Father
The car pulls around to the back of Kentâs mansion and enters a garage. When I get out of the car, Kent is standing at the entrance to the house, his arms crossed.
The guards move to the trunk to remove my dad.
âWhy did you do this,â I ask, glaring at the mafia boss.
He looks me in the eye. âBecause I knew that if I let you say goodbye, youâd tell the driver your address and lead us right there.ââ
I gape, realizing, of course, that I did precisely that.
âWhereas,â he continues, âif I told you that we wanted to take your dad for leverage, youâd have clammed up and given him a chance to run. Honestly, Fay,â he says. âYouâve got to become a little more canny if youâre going to survive in this world.â
I hang my head, suddenly ashamed and exhausted. Heâs right, Iâm too naïve.
The guard takes my arm and moves me into the house.
âTake him to the chamber,â Kent says to the guards who carry my dad. Dad wriggles in their arms, but itâs half-hearted.
I twist as the guards take him away, but Iâm held tight. âThe chamber?!â I call. âWhat is -â
âHe will be fine, Fay,â Kent says to me, holding my gaze. âYou have my word on it. And I donât give my word lightly.â
I bite my lip. âPlease,â I say, begging now. âTell me whatâs happening.â
âI am merely gathering all the players in one place, Fay,â Kent says. âWe have word that Dean still has control of your sister.â
I gasp, tears springing to my eyes. âIs she okay? Is she ââ
âSheâs fine,â he says, his face stone.
âPlease,â I breathe, âcan you get her away from him? She owes him money âheâll make her pay for it ââ
âWhy should I, Fay?â He snaps, interrupting me. âWhat can Fay Thompson give to me,â he says, âto make it worth my time?â
âNothing,â I whisper. âI have nothing. But...â My whole body starts to tremble. âIâll do anything you want.â
âFay Thompson has nothing I want,â he says, careful. âFay Alden, though...â
His words drift off and his plan snaps together in my mind. My dadâs freedom, my sisterâs, in exchange...
I stand up straight. âDo I have your word, on your sonâs life, that if I agree to this...youâll let them go? Make sure theyâre safe?â
He nods slowly, smiling now. âMy word, on my family. Your dad and sister will have my explicit protection.â
I close my eyes and look away, dread filling me as I make this devilâs deal. âFine.â I say. âIâll do it.â
Lippert snaps his fingers in front of my face, making my eyes fly open. âFay,â he says, âyour father and sister? They have to believe it. Do you understand?â
I hold his gaze and slowly nod, agreeing.
âTake her upstairs,â Lippert says. âTo the guestroom. Get some rest, Fay. I will have your sister brought here and tonight we will all have a chat.â
The guard takes me upstairs and leads me to a beautifully appointed bedroom. I hear the lock click behind me and sink onto the bed. I know I should be trying to come up with a plan...
But Lippert is right. Iâm an amateur. Heâs three steps ahead of me at every turn.
And Iâm so, so tired...
Quicker than I would have thought possible, I fall back into a troubled sleep.
A few hours later, Iâm awoken by the sound of the key in the lock. I blink away my sleep and see a woman peeking in my door. âHello?â she says.
âMay I come in?â
I huff a little laugh. âDo I have a choice?â
âNo, dearie,â the older woman says, not unkindly, closing the door behind her.
âA shower for you, quickly,â she says, gesturing towards the bathroom.
I obediently oblige, not seeing the point in arguing. When I come back, she seats me at a little vanity and quietly does my makeup, pins my hair up in elaborate curls, and dresses me in a far-too-gorgeous red gown that falls to my ankles.
I study myself in the mirror. The dress is not girly, but neither is it scandalous or provocative. Instead, when I study myself in the mirror I look...
Well. I look every inch the mafia princess. Rich, poised, a little dangerous.
