Chapter 326
Fall For My Ex's Mafia Father
Which, really, is all Janeen wants for her little sister right now.
Fay sighs and looks askance at the three beers sitting mostly-empty on the table. âIâd kill for one of those right now,â she murmurs, rubbing a hand absently across her belly.
Smirking, Jerome pushes his beer bottle towards her, and she glares at him. âWhat?â he says, grinning. âItâs not like you didnât pickle the baby in tequila for the first month of your pregnancy.â
With a little growl, Fay leans forward and smacks him on the arm, glaring. âI didnât know, Jerome!â
âEh, a little more wonât hurt,â he replies, laughing and nudging the bottle closer, but Fay just closes her eyes and tilts her head back, resting it against the cushion on the back of her chair, relaxing and catching up on her thoughts.
They all sit quietly for a long moment, doing the same as Fay and sorting through their thoughts, their priorities, their suddenly-changed lives.
Because as much as they all know theyâre dedicated to the same cause, theyâre also aware that they have very different roles within it.
After a long moment of staring out at the dark night settling over the sea, searching for the place where the sky meets the waves, Daniel turns his attention back to Fay.
âSo, Donna Lippert,â he says with a sigh. âWhatâs next?â
Fay sits silently for a moment longer before lifting her head back up and opening her eyes, looking straight at him. âWell,â she says slowly, and then she sighs. âI think itâs time you called your uncle,â
Daniel blinks rapidly in surprise while Jeromeâs eyes go wide. âWhat?â
âAnd Natalia too,â she says, sighing again, harder this time, âmuch as I am loathe to bring her back.â
âThat fucking vocab again,â Janeen mutters, shaking her head. Fay ignores her.
âWha â why on earth do you want them back?â Daniel asks, shocked. âPlus, I donât even know if they will â dadâs been all tied up in the justice system now, they will not want to get their hands dirty trying to get him out.â
âI donât want them to try to help your dad,â Fay says, frowning at him. She waves a dismissive hand. âThatâs â I mean, donât we think thatâs a lost cause? Isnât that what the lawyers say â that Kentâs probably going away for life, with all theyâve got him on now?â
Daniel nods slowly. âYeah,â he says, his eyebrows going up. âSo...why are you looking to get Natalia and Alessi back?â
âFor the wedding,â she says simply, her eyes wide as if she doesnât understand why he doesnât get it. Her hand â still wearing its engagement ring â
still continues to rub back and forth across her lower stomach. âAfter all, Alessi will want to be one of the first to know about his great-nephew. And Iâm sure Don Bianci will be interested to hear about what I assume is his first great-grandchild?â
Danielâs jaw drops open â and so does Jeromeâs â as they figure out what sheâs saying.
âPlus,â Fay says with a little sigh, looking down at the table. âMy father will be interested to discuss the new family ties and their implications for future business.â
âWhat?â Janeen asks, her face twisted with confusion. âDad wants to ââ
âNot dad,â Fay snaps, flicking her eyes to Janeen and holding her gaze. âMy father.â
âOh,â Janeen says, understanding, her own eyes going wide now to match the boys.
âFay,â Daniel breathes, his shoulders suddenly tense. âAre you...are you serious? Weâre...going forward with this?â
âWould you like to back out of the engagement, Daniel?â Fay asks, her voice cold. âAbandon me when Iâm pregnant?â
âI mean...no,â he says, hesitating. âIf thatâs...if thatâs what you want, Iâll marry you, Fay. Iâll marry you tomorrow, if you want.â
âProbably next week is better,â she murmurs, looking out over the sea, making Janeenâs mouth drop open and Jerome laugh a dry little laugh.
Daniel turns to stare at his boyfriend, wondering what the hell is so funny about this. âNothing,â Jerome replies to the unasked question, just shrugging. âDonna Lippert just doesnât take long to act, does she?â
âThereâs no time to waste,â Fay murmurs, still not looking at them. âThereâs...way too much to do. Weâve got to get started right now.â
âFay,â Daniel whispers, staring at his beautiful redhaired fiancé, who in turn is staring into the night as if she could take on the darkness itself. âWhat the hell do you have planned?
But Fay doesnât answer.
She, like Kent, has learned to keep her secrets to herself.
Sheâll tell them what they need to know when they need to know it.
