chapter 15
Locked in love
In the evening as I was preparing to leave for home, my phone started ringing. I prayed with all my heart that it would not be the bossâ summon for preparing yet another presentation which meant extra working hours on a lovely weekend. I looked at the phone half-heartedly but was relieved as it turned out to be Ajay who lived in Surat. We were classmates and best friends during our college days. But then life happened and our friendship was limited to occasional phone calls.âHi, Ajay!â I greeted him enthusiastically, âWhat a pleasant surprise?ââMeet me at Coffee nâ Cream within half an hour,â he fired it straight.âYou are here in Mumbai?â I was surprised. âBut, what are you doing here?ââHalf an hour,â he said before hanging up, âmake no delay, please.âBeing an old friend of Ajay, I was used to his mysterious telephone calls. Half an hour later, we were sitting opposite each other in the café.âNow tell me, what brings you here?â I asked.âI am here for a business deal.â An exultant Ajay banged his fist on the table. âAnd you know what, I have cracked a magnanimous deal!ââWow! That calls for a celebration.ââOf- course, Sam,â Ajay said as he got up. âBut before that, letâs have some coffee.âAs Ajay walked towards the counter to place the order, I checked some emails on my phone.âI was dying to meet you, Kavya.âI overheard someone saying from the table right behind me. I assumed him to be some lover-boy and turned back to my emails.âSo is it your place or my friendâs apartment tonight?âThe voice came again and I raised my head from the mails to listen attentively.âHey, whatâs it?â Ajay asked as he returned with the coffee and saw my utterly bewildered face.âCan you see the man sitting on the table behind us?ââYes,â Ajay said as he sneaked a glance at him.âIs he the same guy you see in this picture?â I held out a picture on my mobile phone for him to see.âYes,â Ajay said as he matched the face with that in the picture.âThen, letâs go,â the voice from the table behind us said, âwhat are we waiting for?âI signalled Ajay to remain silent and heard them walk out.âI donât believe this!â I said as I saw the face of the man from the window of the café as he walked hand-in-hand with a woman towards the parking lot.âWho is he?â Ajay asked.âKabir,â I said as I placed a hand below my chin, âmy colleague. He is cheating on his wife, Ajay.ââLet him have some fun, Sam.â Ajay chuckled. âWhy do you have to bother about it?ââI caught him red-handed with some other woman this morning and nowâ¦ââWhat!â Ajay coughed as he choked on the coffee. âAnyway, letâs have a sumptuous dinner and then go to our favourite discotheque, âHELL.â   *    * I closed my eyes and shook my head rhythmically to the music playing in the disco. Ajay looked around and then took a sip from his glass.âSam,â he finally said after pondering for a while, âThis place is my all-time favourite.â âAs it is mine,â I opened my eyes at once.âWe used to come here on most weekends in college, didnât we?ââI still miss those idyllic days of college life, very much!â I took a long sip from my drink.âDo you remember the night when we came here after our farewell?ââHow can I forget?â I sighed. âThat night we wereâ¦âThe music stopped abruptly and noise from the dance floor seized our attention. Both of us instantly turned to look that way. It seemed like some people were fighting over there. âOh my God!â I slapped my head as I recognized a familiar face.âWhat happened?â Ajay asked.âItâs Kabir again!â I said as I jumped to my feet and ran to rescue him.âHey, Kabir!â I said as I tried to pull him away from the dance floor. âWhat happened?ââHow dare he touch my girlfriend!â A drunk Kabir yelled, pointing a finger towards the woman standing by his side.âYou!â I was shocked as I recognized the girl. âWhat are you doing here? Just go home right now.ââWho is she?â Ajay asked. âDo you know her, Sam?ââShe is my neighbour, Tina!âAjay covered his mouth with his hands and chuckled hilariously.âIf you have had your laugh,â I told Ajay, âwould you please help me take him home?â  *    * It was already well past midnight when we reached Kabirâs place. Sonia came running to open the door. Her bloodshot, drowsy eyes told me that she had fallen asleep while waiting for her husband.âWhat happened to him?â Sonia was on the verge of breaking down.âOh, there is nothing to worry about, Sonia.â My courage helped me cook up some lies. âWe had a party at the office and he got drunk.âSonia helped me take Kabir in. On the way, I noticed that plates and dishes were arranged on the dining table and deduced that Sonia hadnât had her dinner.âHe will be fine by tomorrow.â I hadno  words to console her but still kept trying. âWhy donât you have some dinner, Sonia? We all have already, at the office party.ââI am fasting today, Sam.â She kept her eyes down and I understood that she was lying. We stepped out of her house feeling pity for that meek creature, Sonia.âA man like Kabir doesnât deserve a wife like Sonia,â Ajay snorted on our way back. âWhy is she still clinging to him?ââBecause she loves him, Ajay.â GOA, Present Day âWhat a disgusting man Kabir is!â Chetana scowled.âDisgusting?â Sam laughed at Chetanaâs contorted face till he was out of breath. âHe is a charmer. And we, his friends, call him Mr. Casanova!ââWhat a nice name!â Chetana stared derisively at him. âSuits him very much.ââIn a way,â Sam sighed thoughtfully, âI hold myself responsible for poor Soniaâs plight.ââHow come?â Chetanaâs surprised eyes turned his way.âKabir met those three women through me,â Sam disclosed.âHow mean of you, Sam!â Chetana rolled her eyes.âWhy do you always jump to conclusions, Chetana?â Sam chuckled. âListen to the story first.ââPlease go on.â Chetana crossed her hands on her chest as she prepared to listen.Â
