Chapter 104

Spoiled by the President

A surge of frustration rocked through Nell as she scratched her head absentmindedly.

Eventually, she broke the long silence in a voice suggesting impatience. “Say what you need to say right now or I’ll take my leave!”

“Hang on!”

A low voice filled the air. Then, Gideon was seen rising to his feet and began walking toward her.

For reasons unknown to herself, her breathing turned shallower.

The man stopped in front of her. Keeping both hands in the pockets, he held her gaze with quiet intensity.

Despite the tensed facial features, his dark, deep-set eyes twinkled with a hint of brilliance upon discovering the slight annoyance that flashed across the woman’s face.

“Were you mad at me last night because of this?”

This caught Nell by surprise.

She raised her head to look at him, dumbfounded.

Gideon threw out another remark casually.

“Did you learn this from the Jones family?”

Nell widened her eyes in disbelief.

How could this man know everything?

Did he have preternaturally good eyesight or hearing?

Gideon resolved her doubts in a matter of seconds.

“The engagement between the Garretts and I is a well-kept secret. In the entire Jincheng, only Mrs. Jones, who is closely connected to the Garretts, knows about it, but you didn’t meet her last night. Besides, she did not bring this up to you in the previous phone call. Well, I reckon she didn’t intend to disclose the matter to you.

“But even if she remains quiet, someone else will carry out that responsibility on her behalf. Mrs. Jones’ favorite grandchild, Blaine, might have learned about it by chance. Not forgetting that he’s your childhood friend, it’s only natural that he would try to rescue you from this dangerous situation. Am I right?”

Nell blinked, her mouth agape.

No words could describe the astonishment that filled her at this moment.

Was this man... A psychic in his past life?

She regained her composure eventually.

She retreated a step backward to inspect him with nonchalant eyes.

“So what? Can you argue what he told me was wrong?”

“He was right.”

The affirmative answer that escaped his mouth without hesitation stunned Nell once more.

What followed immediately after was a storm that raged within her.

“And then? What is it that you’re trying to tell me?”

She was close to losing it!

She had never seen a person speaking with such reassurance despite obviously being in the wrong!

He was definitely pushing too hard!

Although she never expected the two of them to have a happily-ever-after, at the very least, she was still legally Mrs. Leith. Should he not have been honest to her regarding these matters even if their relationship was only based on a partnership?

She had the right to know!

For reasons unknown to Gideon, a feeling of satisfaction materialized in his heart as he regarded the enraged young lady in front of him.

“Are you... Jealous?”

“Hell no!”

Exasperated, Nell pushed the man in front of her forcefully as she shouted, “Get out of my way! I’m not in the mood to waste my time here. You having a fiancée or a daughter is none of my business! Move!”

She appeared infuriated, even her eyes were red in fury.

Gideon held her gaze with quiet intensity.

He saw his own reflection in the woman’s slightly red eyes. There was a flurry of emotions that stormed beneath the seemingly calm surface.

In the next few seconds, she pushed him away with all her might and dashed toward the second floor.

Nell ran for her bedroom straightaway.

Gideon trailed behind immediately after.

His eyelids twitched upon witnessing the woman furiously stuffing her clothes into a bag.

“What are you doing?”

He grabbed her arm.

She returned his question with a hateful glare.

A lump caught in Gideon’s throat.

“Let go of me!”

“No!”

“Gideon Leith, don’t challenge me!”

Nell was indeed going ballistic!

She had never felt like this in her life. Ever!

Why did this man think he could deceive her like this?

Gideon regarded her intently in the eyes before saying in a deep voice, “Give me a chance to explain myself.”

“Not interested!”

“Nell Jennings!”

“Let go of me --- mmm!”

Without warning, he locked his lips on hers forcefully, preventing her from finishing the sentence.

The man’s aggressive kiss was able to destroy the world. He pressed one hand on the back of her head and the other one tightly wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer toward himself. It was as if he was eager to merge their bodies into one.

Nell tried to break free of his embrace initially but it was to no avail. Besides, this man was so skilled that he launched his attacks without giving the other party time to react.

Soon, her thoughts tangled into a massive mess and she lost the ability to think rationally.

After a long time, Gideon finally released her.

Looking down at the red- eyed young lady whose cheeks were flushed, out of both embarrassment and fury, the corners of his lips twitched upward into a faint smile.

“I didn’t know you care so much about me. I’m delighted to learn this.”

His deep voice was laced with a hint of seductiveness.

Nell glared back at him.

“Who cares about you?”

“Why would you be mad if you don’t care about me?”

“Anyone would be angry when lied to.”

“I didn’t lie to you.”

“You...”

“Indeed, an engagement has been made between the Garretts and I, but it happened when I was five. Besides, the child that I supposedly had an engagement with is no longer in this world. Obviously, the arrangement is canceled. Stephanie Garrett is only the foster daughter of the Garretts.

She’s not qualified to marry into the Leith family.”

This news stunned Nell greatly.

Her glistening eyes remained fixed on him.

Gideon continued on with the explanation, “It wasn’t my deliberate intention to keep the truth about my child from you. I told you I was on the phone with someone truly important in my life when you questioned me last time. I was planning to bring you over to the capital to meet her but you’ve been putting it off each time. You can’t blame me on that one, can you?”

Nell opened her mouth but no words came out.

She was too overwhelmed to respond.

Several moments later, she finally retrieved her gaze and declared, “But you could’ve told me beforehand.”

“I thought you knew.”

Indeed, although the fact about his child was not well-known news, the people close to him had probably learned about it.

Nell had been staying in Leith Gardens for quite some time now, spending most of her days with Aunt Joyce and the other experienced maids that had been working for the Leith for over a decade. He thought she would have heard a thing or two from them by now.

She did not know what else to comment.

An awkward silence fell between the two.

Somehow, she could not shake off the feeling that something seemed off about this situation, although the explanation he just provided seemed to fit logically.

Despite that, she failed to pinpoint it down to one particular reason.

A faint smile formed on the corners of Gideon’s mouth as he regarded her.

“Since I’ve already come clean to you, are you going to tell me the reason you went looking for Old K?”

Nell lifted her head to meet his gaze.

The dark pupils of the man’s deep-set eyes resembled two bottomless, fathomless lakes.

Gideon’s brows twitched ever so slightly.

“You suspect there’s another reason for our mother's death?”

Nell glared back.

“My mother!”

“Your mother is my mother too. Am I wrong?”

“...”

Nell was speechless.

She decided to brush it off.

With a slight nod of the head, she replied, “Yes, but I don’t have any evidence, which is why I need assistance to probe into this issue. I was told recently that he’s pretty skilled in this realm thus I asked for his help. He invited me out today because there’s been some progress on the matter. He was only trying to discuss that with me.”
