Chapter 118
Spoiled by the President
Also, why was he saying that some people did not suit her?
Was he referring to Jason or Gideon?
Nell was amused. Unwilling to waste another breath with this man, she quickened her pace.
Dylan too made haste. As they advanced into the dining hall, he suddenly grabbed her by the wrist to help her up.
âMs. Jennings, watch your step.â
Out of instinct, Nell withdrew her arm and turned to glare at him.
Of course she was watching where her feet took her. Nell had walked the same path from the living room to the dining hall countless times before the age of eighteen after all. Sure, it had been several years since she last walked the path, but it was not as though it was so unfamiliar that she would stumble and fall.
It was obvious that the man did it on purpose.
He deliberately put up a provocative front in public, showing that they both were on intimate terms.
As expected, she heard Celineâs giggles coming from the dining hall.
âOh! I was wondering what took sister and Brother Cap so long when we are all already here? It seems you both intentionally lagged behind. Brother Cap, my sister is a gentle and modest person, donât you take advantage of her.â
Dylan burst out laughing. âNo, no. Ms. Jennings is such a beautiful woman, of course Iâll love her dearly. Why would I take advantage of her?â
Sylvia was pleased at the sight.
With a smile, she happily nodded. âItâs a great thing that you two hit it off. Come, take a seat here!â
Dylan turned to grin at Nell. âNelly, letâs go over.â
The frown on Nellâs face deepened.
She was feeling sick to the stomach.
Seeing that Nell remained still, Sally immediately got up.
âNelly, come sit here! Sit next to Celine.â
It looked as though Sally got Nell out of a fix when in fact, it was rather absurd to have her take a seat on Celineâs right side with Jason sitting on the left.
Why give her the front row seat to watch them be lovey-dovey?
Even if they were alright with it, she still found it disgusting!
Without a word, Nell took strides to the seat just beneath Sylvia and the right side of Shaun.
That was supposed to be Sallyâs seat but it was vacant because she got up.
Nell looked at her and flashed a faint smile. âAunt Sally, Iâll sit here. Iâm sure youâre okay with it!â
The smile on Sallyâs face froze.
Sylvia immediately became sulky.
âNell Jennings! That seat is reserved for elders! Who do you think you are sitting there?â
Nell indifferently replied, âThis used to be my motherâs seat. I miss her. Canât I sit over here in her memory?â
Sylvia turned blue in the face from rage.
Shaun was not too happy either.
Ever since her mother died, his daughter had become a whole other person. He was put off by Nellâs constant attempts of finding fault and taking a dig at him.
With her sitting beside him, there was no way Shaun could sit down and have a decent meal.
With that, Shaun threw a fierce look and solemnly answered, âNell Jennings, sit where youâre supposed to! This seat belongs to your Aunt Sally.â
Nell persisted. âThis is my motherâs seat.â
âYou!â
Sally stepped in on time.
âJust leave it. Itâs only a seat. Itâs fine. Let Nelly sit there if she wants to. Iâll just sit over here.â
She then took a seat at the foot of the table with grievance.
Although it appeared a compromise had been reached; in reality, it put Nell under a microscope of scrutiny. Even Dylan, who had a good opinion of her, could not help but frown.
He was no stranger to whispers of the Eldest Miss Jennings being arrogant and headstrong, and always thought it to be only a rumor. Now it seemed it was true.
Regardless, Sally was her elder and although a stepmother, she was nice to Nell.
Yet, Nell did not show appreciation. How ungrateful!
Despite having a bone to pick, Dylan was unable to suppress the arousing desire facing Nellâs unworldly face.
Ha! Arrogant, so be it!
He was most fond of little wild cats with their paws out as it was more of a thrill compared to the gentle and complacent type. Surely, Dylan would gain a better sense of achievement taming her.
At that thought, he smiled. âI canât believe Madam Jennings is put on a spot because of me. Itâs okay. Since Nelly is unwilling to sit with me, Iâll just sit at the foot. Madam Jennings, you can sit back there!â
Caught in a predicament, Sally smiled apologetically and awkwardly at Dylan.
âMr. Cap, Iâm really sorry you had to see this.â
âItâs okay. Ms. Jennings is straightforward, I can tell. Girls like this donât usually harbor ill intentions, itâs the type I really like.â
âItâs great that itâs the type you like.â
Sally let out a sigh before turning to Nell.
With a stiffened face, Nell listened in as they talked about her as though she was some commodity. They had complete disregard for her feelings.
She coldly smirked. Who would have thought Sylvia would be this shameless.
What was this?
Pimping?
Or selling a granddaughter?
She finally got to the bottom of the situation. Sylvia must have heard from somewhere and believed that her relationship with Gideon was unstable.
Hence, Sylvia came up with a way to find her the next patron.
With downcast eyes, Nell smiled at the sudden revelation.
By chance, Sylvia asked her, âNell, I heard that President Leith did not bring you along back to the capital?â
Nell faintly acknowledged.
Sylvia beamed smugly. âI told you! You arenât made for each other. Itâs not too late to mend your ways while you still have your youth.â
Sitting on the side, Dylan chimed in.
âYes, yes, yes. Ms. Jennings, youâre still young and beautiful. Iâm sure you have a lot of admirers. Why put all your eggs in one basket?â
Nell threw him a faint glance before turning to Sylvia.
âDid you catch wind of something?â
Sylvia was taken aback.
A brief moment later, she taunted. âWell, Iâll spare you the suspense and get straight to the point now that you know. President Leith already has a fiancée back in the capital. You know better than me why he did not bring you along. Nell, we, the Jennings, might not be some prominent family, but we have our dignity in Jincheng.
âI donât care who you want to be with but Iâll never allow you to destroy someone elseâs family and soil the family name! You should break it off with Gideon Leith and find someone decent to marry. Then, we can still recognize you as part of the family.â
Nell stared at the old woman, her eyes cynical.
âIsnât there someone in this room who destroyed someone elseâs family and soiled the family name? Why donât you straighten it out with her instead of coming at me?â
âYou!â

âDonât give me lip! Nell, how can you say such a thing?â
âIâm only pointing out the facts. You should engage in soul-searching before you go off on others, donât you think?â
âYou!â
With the situation almost getting out of hand, Celine jumped in to mediate.
âFather, sister, enough. We have a guest!â
Eventually recalling the presence of an outsider, everyone bit their tongue in a huff.
Celine turned to look at Nell and curled a friendly smile.
âSister, I know you have always held a grudge against me and my mother. We won't deny it nor do we expect your forgiveness, but grandmotherâs only trying to do good by you. You can hurt us but you canât abuse grandmotherâs kindness!â
