Chapter 135

Spoiled by the President

Gideon threw a nonchalant glance at Stephanie.

“Oh? What did she say?”

“She said that...” She hesitated for a couple of seconds. “Aunt Jean is worse than a kindergartener. That her eyes and fingers were only there for show, and that she’s arrogant...”

Jean began sobbing in grievance.

“Gideon, is that how a senior should be treated? Even if she doesn’t care about the Leith’s prestige, at least take into consideration the fact that I’ve suffered untold hardship raising you all these years. But do you see how she treated me?”

She felt sorrier for herself the more she spoke about it. Tears rolled down her eyes uncontrollably like a dam floodgate that had been opened.

Stephanie quickly handed over some tissue, not forgetting to console the woman simultaneously. “Aunt Jean, try not to be too upset. Elder Brother Gideon might feel sorry to see you in this state.”

Jean received the tissue and dabbed it on the corners of her eyes. “Will he? The vixen has already captivated his heart. Will he still think about anyone else?”

Gideon froze for a couple of seconds before rubbing his thumb between his brows.

“Aunt, why don’t you tell me what you said to Nelly?”

“I...”

Words stuck in her throat. She stuttered for several seconds before forcing these words out of her mouth. “What could I have said? You’ve been hiding the woman and not bringing her home. I just paid her a casual visit out of curiosity. Do you think I was going to bully her or something?”

Gideon smiled sarcastically. “Oh? Just a casual visit?”

“Of, of course!”

A guilty expression was written all over her face. Gideon thought it was funny.

“Well, Aunt, I’m sure you know what you’ve done. I’m letting this go since Nell has already fought for herself. I’m going to resume work if there’s nothing else. Make yourself at home!”

He went back to his seat after that without tending to the two women.

Jean was infuriated. She intended to say something else but Stephanie tugged at the corner of her sleeve to prevent her from doing so.

Stephanie smiled faintly while shaking her head. At this, Jean reluctantly swallowed her anger and stomped out of the room.

Jean left but Stephanie did not pick up her pace.

She remained rooted to the ground. The light khaki cashmere skirt and black sheepskin boots made her look young and fashionable.

Stephanie could feel her heart pounding erratically beneath the skin as she shifted her attention toward the indifferent yet handsome man sitting behind the office desk.

Eventually, the piercing stare made Gideon raise his head impatiently.

The pair of black eyes glared back coldly. “Anything else?”

Stephanie hesitated.

Her skin was so pale it made her appear sick all the time. She forced a faint smile under his cold stare.

“Nothing much. We’ve not seen each other for a while and I was surprised to learn about your marriage. Are you two... close?”

Gideon’s fingers clasped around the pen as he bored his eyes into hers.

Instead of ignoring the question, the corners of his lips twitched slightly into a cold smile.

“Miss Garrett, do you think that my wife and I are doing poorly?”

“...”

Stephanie was at a loss for words.

An awkward tension filled the air.

The corners of her lips twitched. “It’s not that. I figure Miss Jennings is a woman of strong character, and Lizzy is only so young thus I’m afraid they can’t get along well. When that happens...”

“It’s none of your business.”

The man’s voice laced with indifference stunned Stephanie. She looked at him in disbelief.

None of your business.

Were these four simple words all it took to brush off all the memories of their past?

Tears welled up in her eyes. She finally squeezed these words out of her mouth several moments later. “Elder Brother Gideon, I apologize if this attitude is your way of lashing out at me for leaving your side five years ago. But Lizzy is still a child, an innocent child. She shouldn’t be involved in the mess created by us adults...”

“What are you talking about?”

Gideon furrowed his eyebrows, evidently annoyed. His gaze toward her was now filled with more impatience.

“What I mean is even if we’ve broken up, I have looked after Lizzy since young and if she’s not happy...”

“Miss Garrett, I had no idea that you’ve fostered so many misunderstandings about our relationship!”

Gideon interrupted her without hesitation as if he was tired of her pitiful speech.

“We haven’t been together before so how could we have broken up? Besides, Lizzy is my daughter. An outsider has no place to judge her happiness!”

“...”

Stephanie was speechless.

She stood there motionless as the man’s unperturbed expression and heartless words wounded her heart like sharp knives.

She did not expect to be called an outsider after being there for this man all these years.

Tears rolled down her cheeks involuntarily as she shook her head. Her lips parted as if to say something but the irritated man dismissed her.

“Well, you should leave now!”

......

In the end, Stephanie dashed out of the room in tears.

Matthew brushed past her when he was walking in with some documents. His heart was lingering with fear upon seeing the woman leaving with one hand covering her face.

“President, Aunt and Miss Garrett left just like that?”

Gideon looked suspiciously at the man.

“How is it going at home?”

Matthew appeared shocked but quickly came to his senses. “Not bad. I called Aunt Joyce earlier and she told me that Missus had a good lunch and good rest. Apparently she had three bowls of rice for lunch!”

Gideon frowned.

Matthew thought the man was going to say something unusually serious. “Why eat so much when she’s ill? Doesn’t she know that a patient shouldn’t eat or drink excessively?”

“...”

Matthew did not know what else to say.

“President, that’s not the main point?’

It was dark when Gideon returned to Leith Garden.

Nell had spent the afternoon lying in bed. Her cold had gotten much better after taking the medicine. She was getting bored at night thus she decided to help out in the kitchen.

This was the sight that entered Gideon’s eyes when he returned home.

The kitchen helpers had all been dismissed. The little woman dressed in casual home clothes had an apron over her neck. She was stirring the soup in the pot with a ladle.

She scooped up a bit of the content and extended her neck to perform a taste test. The warm yellow light illuminated on her exposed snowy white neck. Few strands of hair fell over the side of her cheeks playfully. They swayed slightly as the woman moved.

Gideon had butterflies looking at the sight. He waved his hand in the air dismissively at Aunt Joyce before tiptoeing into the kitchen.

Nell made minestrone soup tonight. She firmly believed that nothing should affect the mood for a good meal.

Thinking it was just one of the kitchen helpers, she said casually without looking back, “What’s the time? Please serve the dishes if it’s about time.

This soup still needs to boil a little longer”
