Chapter 144
Spoiled by the President
Snapping out of her head, Jean echoed, âYes, yes, yes. Itâs that. Iâm here for the scenery.â
Old Madam took a glance at her in doubt. âOh, really? Why do I get the feeling that youâre lying?â
Jean, â...â
Jean was her biological daughter, after all. The old lady was no stranger to her character. By the look of her reaction, the old lady knew Jean was withholding the truth.
Hence, she scoffed. âJean, did you go after Gideonâs wife?â
Holding her breath, Jean wanted to deny without second thought.
Old Madam interrupted her. âFine, itâs fine if you donât tell me the truth. Iâve seen Gideonâs wife anyway, sheâs a nice girl. I really like her so donât you meddle in their business or stir up trouble for them, do you hear me?â
Jean blew her top.
âMom, how can you say such a thing? What do you mean stir up trouble? Do you know what kind of woman she is?â
âOf course I do!â
Nelly was such a kind-hearted young lady!
Not only did she have a heart of gold, she had great respect for the elderly. She had witnessed it with her own eyes over the past two days!
âMom, why do you let her be with Gideon if you know? Donât you know what people have been saying about her? To allow such a woman to marry into the Leith family, it is a disgrace to our family!â
âEnough!â
The old lady flew into rage. âEmpty vessels make the most sound. What do I care about what people have to say? I believe what I see with my own two eyes, and you! Make haste to the capital with me. Youâre not to remain here to create problems. Donât bother thinking about coming back if you wonât leave with me!â
âMom...â
âThatâs the end of it. Letâs go!â
The old lady left with Lizzy in a huff.
Jean was hopping mad.
âStephanie, do you think my mom is charmed by that woman? Why is mom so trusting of her?â
With downcast eyes, Stephanie clenched her fists by her sides in secret. Shortly, she smiled.
âThe old madam has always believed in good so, naturally, she sees the good in people. This is normal. Aunt Leith, thereâs no need to be angry over this.â
Jean rubbed her temples, soothing the headache caused by anger.
âAlright, alright. You donât need to mollify me with your words. I know Iâm nothing in Old Madamâs eyes. Sheâd rather be fooled by a little girl who isnât even officially married into our family yet. What a joke!â
Stephanie softly asked, âWhat do we do now?â
Jean threw a glance at her.
âWhat is there to do? The old madam has spoken, so itâs back to the capital for me! Otherwise, I wonât be able to get past the gates to the Leiths!â
Jean took Stephanie along to the capital.
On the other end, the Jennings were in trouble yet again!
This time, it happened at midnight.
Celine had just rested her head when suddenly, she heard a womanâs cries outside the window.
The cries were whimpers, like a little animal wailing in sorrow in the dark.
Startled, she widened her eyes and turned to the window in darkness. She was a bag of nerves.
As the curtain fluttered, something lifted a corner of it. The drapes flapped in the air and outlined a womanâs features.
Moreover, those features hovered towards her, similar to a sharp black claw reaching to strangle her by the throat.
âAhhh!â
As horrified screams broke into the night, Celine lifted the covers and made a run outside.
âWhatâs wrong? What happened?â
Celine was staying in a room on the second floor, right next to Shaun and Sallyâs bedroom. Hearing the screams, they put on some clothes and ran out to investigate.
Wearing only a thin layer of pajamas, Celine glared towards a corner of her room with her hair in disarray and face red with terror. She was quivering from the fright.
âSheâs here! Sheâs here!â
âWho?â
Everyone was confused. Maids who came rushing over at the sound of the noise were also baffled.
âWhatâs wrong with the second miss?â
âWhoâs here?â
Pale in the face, Celine grabbed onto Sallyâs wrist. With pupils dilated, she spoke in a trembling voice, âMom, sheâs back! Sheâs back for my life!â
Sallyâs complexion was washed of color.
Shaun sternly reproved, âWhat are you babbling about? Whoâs back in the middle of the night?â
Sally shot him a sharp stare. The blank yet nosy look on the maidsâ faces hit Shaun with a realization, painting his face in a lighter shade.
It was then that a stern and hoary voice was heard from behind.
âWhy are you people making such a commotion at night?â
Someone held Sylvia by the arm as they came forth. Shaun answered, âItâs Celine. Thereâs something spooky in her room. She was so scared that she ran out.â
The moment Celine laid eyes on Sylvia, she dashed over as though she finally saw a glimpse of hope.
âGrandma, save me! Sheâs here! She has come for my life!â
Sullen, Sylvia darted a sharp gaze around before coldly blurting, âWhat do you mean for your life? A clear conscience makes a soft pillow and a guilty conscience is a bed of thorns. I want to see whoâs playing god and ghost here!â
With that, she brought a crowd into the room.
All was normal inside the exquisitely and lavishly decorated bedroom. At the flick of the light, nothing was out of the ordinary apart from a slightly messy bed of which was a sign that someone had slept on it.
âCeline, where is the person you mentioned?â
âOver at the window!â
Holding onto Sylviaâs arm, Celine was trembling all over as she pointed towards the direction of the window.
âItâs there. I heard it. She was crying and tried to strangle me. I saw it.â
Sylvia frowned.
Standing at a side, Sally instructed two of the maids, âYou two, go take a look.â
âYes.â
The maids walked over and pulled the curtains open. They carefully inspected both inside and outside, including the balcony.
âOld Madam, Sir, Madam, Second Miss, we have gone through the area. Thereâs no one.â
Sylvia turned to gaze at Celine.
Celine stood there in a daze, her face in disbelief.
âImpossible. I did hear noises. I saw her extend her arm towards me...â
âCould it be that youâve been so weary lately that youâre hallucinating?â
Sylvia felt sorry for this granddaughter of hers, especially in recent times. Because of Nell, she lost her baby and had to take cover at home for scandals to die down. She must be under a lot of pressure.
Thus, she was not annoyed to be awoken in the late of the night.

Sally glanced towards the windows and frowned. A brief moment later, she ordered the maid to turn off the light.
âMom, why did you ask them to turn off the light?â
âCeline, the hand that youâre talking about, is it this?â
Sally gestured to her to look towards the window. The next second, Celine screamed her lungs out.
