Chapter 147
Spoiled by the President
âItâs like this. Your recommendations of Lucy and Janet were great. Itâs hard to find such young and talented actors that are willing to put in the work.
Janet, in particular, has the kind of expression you donât see in young actors.â
Without butting in, Nell quietly listened and waited for his next line, although she could already guess what he was trying to say.
As she expected, Gareth said, âThereâs another two months before the filming of âHidden River: Ashleyâ is finished. I have a friend who just so happens to be producing a new film. Heâs a young director who hasnât made much of a name for himself. The production may not be a major one but he has his eye on Janet. He wants Janet to play the lead. I was wondering if you could say a few words to her, since you guys have a great relationship and all?â
Nell smiled.
âDirector Leith, this is a great thing. Why donât you speak to Jan personally? Arenât you guys together all the time on the set? You have all the opportunity in the world!â
Gareth threw a look as though he was in an awkward position.
âThis... Iâll be honest, I asked her but she refused.â
Nell was taken aback as it came like a bolt out of the blue.
She knew Janet inside out. Although she was an A-list celebrity in the entertainment world, she was never the type to treat people favorably, nor was she a snob who looked down upon fresh directors.
With Hancock Enterprise at her back, Janet did not lack the resources. Her crew also took scripts as they came, picking parts that were to Janetâs liking without any regard to whether it was a major or minor production.
For Gareth to recommend her the part, it could only mean that the script was pretty good.
It was rather strange for Janet to refuse.
Nell nodded. âIf thatâs the case, she must have her own reasons for doing so! Iâm only a friend of hers. I canât make decisions for her. Iâm afraid I canât be of help to you on this.â
Gareth replied, âI know. Iâm not demanding that you get a yes from her. I just want to give it another go while thereâs still a chance.â
In a fix, he rubbed his arms. âTo be honest, my friend fancies her for the role of the female lead. Iâm not counting on you to persuade her but if you could help me ask about the reason behind her refusal, weâll be able to adopt the appropriate measures!â
Nell gave it a thought and finally agreed to it, seeing that the act was without prejudice and Gareth did present himself sincerely.
Nevertheless, she gave a warning. âLet me make this clear. Iâm only enquiring about the reason and wonât help you to persuade her. Donât blame me if it doesnât work out in the end.â
Gareth gave his word. After the duo came to an agreement, he left feeling grateful.
Just before he departed, Gareth placed the gift on a table.
Helpless, Nell phoned Gideon to tell him about the matter.
It never occurred to her that Gideon would simply smile and reply, âI told him to bring a gift. You should just keep it.â
Nell was rendered speechless.
However, it was better if she left it at that since he already said so.
After hanging up, she gave Janet a call, inviting her to go shopping and have dinner together.
Janet agreed.
It was six in the evening when Nell got off work. She drove straight to the mall where Janet agreed to meet.
Due to being involved in the shooting of a film, Janet had been with the filming crew and barely had a chance to come out. Today was a day she could let loose.
The moment they met, Nell quickly picked up on Janet looking a little off-color. Her face was pale and she seemed rather run-down.
She asked with concern, âIs everything okay with you? Has the shooting been hard on you or are you feeling out of sorts?â
Nell reached out to feel her forehead.
To her surprise, Janet leaned back to dodge. Averting her gaze in guilt, she shook her head. âNothing. Iâm just feeling a little under the weather. It might be from the night shoots lately!â
Without putting much thought into it, Nell nodded in comprehension.
Nonetheless, she expressed great concern. âDespite how tired you are, you need to look after your body. Donât you have a few assistants? Get them to cook you some nutritious stew for nourishment!â
Janet forced a smile. âI laid off the assistants. I donât have anyone with me other than Nikki.â
Nell was surprised by the unexpected news.
Like a proud princess, Janet usually had a huge entourage with her anywhere she had a shoot.
After all, she had the skills and capital, and outsiders had no say in this.
It was inconceivable that Janet had only Nikki on set with her!
The surprised look on Nellâs face saw Janet helplessly mocking herself.
âYou must find it hard to believe. Itâs really nothing. At the end of the day, we have only ourselves to depend on.â
Stunned, Nell enquired, âWhat do you mean? Did you have a falling out with the elders of your family?â
Without holding back the truth, Janet nodded.
âWhy?â
Unwilling to dwell further on the matter, Janet shook her head. âItâs nothing. Everything is just at sixes and sevens. Letâs not talk about it now that I can finally let my hair down today. Letâs go shopping.â
Nell then nodded.
The duo strolled along the shops and soon settled for a nicely furnished high-end restaurant to have a meal.
Seeing that she was not in good spirits, Nell specially ordered a few of her favorite dishes.
To her dismay, Janet frowned when the dish was served.
âWhatâs wrong? You donât look well. Why donât I go to the hospital with you?â
Janet waved her hand and forced a smile. âIâm okay.â
Although Nell was worried, she was not in the position to push the envelope with Janet taking a firm stance.
It did not take long before all dishes were served.

ï¤Chapter 487 The End Pt. 5 Janet may have a slim build and adopt an elegant yet cold outlook but underneath it all was an adorable meat-lover. Because she had to maintain her figure to be behind a camera, she took great pains to portion her food.
As a childhood friend of Janet, Nell knew better than anyone else.
Hence, Nell picked up a piece of beef and placed it in her bowl once the food had arrived. While helping Janet to the food, Nell remarked, âYou really have to take care of yourself. Sure, you need to maintain your figure in a shoot, but that doesnât mean you should stop eating. Think of today as a vacation. Have some more food. Your waistline wonât grow that much after a meal. Donât worry!â
As Janet gazed at the meat in her bowl, a frown almost went undetected between her brows.
Without a word, she still picked it up with her chopsticks and forced it into her mouth.
Before the meat made it to her mouth, the fragrance of it sent her stomach churning.
Putting down her chopsticks, Janet swiftly blurted, âExcuse me.â
She rushed to the ladiesâ room in a hurry.
Before Nell could react, the person before her disappeared.
In a daze, Nell sat there with her mind drawing a blank. It took several seconds before she came to realize what was going on.
This-This... This reaction...
No way?!
