Chapter 148

Spoiled by the President

Back in the loo, Janet was clinging on the toilet bowl as she tossed her cookies.

Nell scurried in and the sight of Janet in turmoil basically confirmed her suspicion. Her heart felt for her in that moment.

She shuffled out to pour her a glass of water and came back with some paper towels as well.

While patting her back, Nell expressed concern. “How are you? Are you alright?”

Waving her arm in the air, Janet shook her head.

It took a while before Janet found her voice. “I’m alright, it’s okay.”

Janet took a sip from the glass of water Nell handed her, gargled and wiped her mouth with the paper towel. After she was done, she said, “I’m sorry to ruin your evening.”

Nell shook her head. “What are you saying? You’re the one in pain, why apologize?”

She paused before furiously enquiring, “Why didn’t you tell me such an important thing? What’s going on?”

Janet stared at her. Knowing that Nell had her suspicions, Janet bit her lip.

After a while, she answered, “As you can already tell, I’m pregnant.”

Nell nodded. “I guess anyone can tell by your strong reaction.”

The smile Janet had plastered on her face spoke of endless desolation.

“I fell out with my dad because of this.”

Nell frowned. “What happened? Why did you have a fallout with your father? Who’s the child’s father? Why isn’t he coming out?”

“The child’s father...”

Janet mumbled under her breath before flashing a bleak grin.

“Forget it. Let’s not talk about it. Nelly, can you help me keep this secret?”

Nell grimaced, annoyed towards Janet’s avoidance about the father in question.

However, she was also aware that Janet was an adult. If Janet had made up her mind about not telling anyone, she as a friend should respect her decision.

She sighed and nodded. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone about this but what do you plan to do with the child? You can’t hide your tummy forever.

You’re shooting a film everyday too!”

Janet stared into space, her eyes a blank.

After a while, she shook her head. “I don’t know but this shoot will be completed in another two months. I’ll try to keep it under wraps so that no one finds out. As for the future... I’ll play it by ear!”

The furrow between Nell’s brows deepened.

Nevertheless, Nell aided her out without a word.

They returned to their seats, albeit in a rather different frame of mind.

Nell heaved a sigh. “To be honest, I was asked by Gareth to persuade you to join the production he mentioned before but that’s not going to happen by the looks of it.”

Janet nodded. “He discussed the shoot with. It’s a good script and I’m really tempted. Obviously, my current state proves it isn’t the right time.”

Nell bobbed her head. Her fingers randomly dabbled with a spoon on the table as she fell deep into ponder.

The duo were of course, not in the mood to eat. In the end, Nell asked, “Where are you staying now? Nikki is only a teenager so she can be inexperienced in many areas. Is she able to take care of you alone?”

Janet turned her gaze outside the window. The sun had already dipped down the horizon with lights illuminating the highway that the window overlooked. Traffic was busy on the street, providing a thriving scenery. However, it was a contrast to the anguish in her heart.

Now, it seemed only the sister opposite her was capable of giving her warmth.

Janet shook her head. “I don’t know. My dad froze all the cards under my name as a call to my repentance. He cut me off from the house I was living in, and also the one on the East Coast of Hexi. I’m now staying in the hotel with the film crew.”

She paused before giving out a faint smile. “It’s alright. I’ll take it a step at a time! It’s not like he’ll drive me to death.”

Nell immediately held her hands and solemnly chided, “What rubbish are you saying! You still have me!”

With that, she reflected for a second before fishing out a bank card and a bunch of keys from her purse. Nell then placed the items in Janet’s hands.

“Keep the card. The password is my birthday. There isn’t much money in the account but you can use it for now. We’ll figure it out later. The keys are to an apartment I used to reside in. It’s not a huge space but you can make do for the time being. I’ll visit every now and then.”

She pursed her lips before continuing. “I may not agree with things getting sour between you and Uncle Hancock, as whatever happens, blood is thicker than water, but it has happened. He has been good to you. However, I guess you have your own reasons for it turning out the way it did. I won’t ask if you don’t want to speak of it. This is the support I can offer you. I can only hope all is well with you.”

Janet gazed at her, her eyes brimming in tears. In the end, she could not hold back the tears flowing down her cheeks.

Biting her lip, she lowered her head. After a while, she whispered in a trembling voice, “Thank you, Nelly.”

With eyes swelling up in tears, Nell forced a smile. Moments later, she wiped her tears and grinned. “Alright now, it’s not like the sky is falling down.

This is not the Jan I know. Don’t think too much of it and give birth if you want the child. You have this godmother ready at your back! Nothing is a problem. As for the child’s father, to hell with him whether he shows up or not. It’s not like we’re begging for him to father the child!”

Janet knew Nell was trying to offer comfort. Although misery still dwelled within her, at least she was more at ease.

Accepting Nell’s kindness, Janet chuckled. The atmosphere finally lost its former intensity.

Once they were done with dinner, Nell did not want Janet to stroll down the street with her due to her current condition. Hence, Nell drove her straight back to the shoot.

Shortly after dropping off Janet, Nell drove back home and while on the way, she gave Gareth a call.

Without mentioning that Janet was pregnant, she only revealed that it was not a convenient time for her to partake in the shoot.

In the call, although Gareth had prepared for it, he still felt disappointed upon hearing the answer.

Nell understood. Subjectivity tended to revolve around television dramas, after all.

If a creator fixated their mind on a certain actor for a part, they would have the inclination to use the actor as the basis of the character during the creative process.

It would be definitely devastating to find out that this person would not be able to join in production at the end.

She offered words of comfort. “There’s nothing much I can do. You can have your friend broaden his search. A character such as Jan might not be a lot but through careful vetting, I’m sure he’ll be able to find the replacement.”

We had already decided that Janet would play the role but didn’t have the courage to speak up because we were unsure where she stands. We were certain that we wanted her in on the production after our cooperation in ’Hidden River: Ashley’. It’s not going to be easy to find a new actor now.”
