Chapter 219
Spoiled by the President
Janet was about to lose her mind upon hearing Nellâs nonchalant reaction.
âNelly! I donât want to keep nagging but youâre not an amateur in this industry. Both of us know how terrifying public opinion can be. You canât take these things lightly if youâve decided to become a female actress.
These things could get out of control with just one slip of the mouth. When that happens, even your Mr. Leith might not be able to turn the tables around.
Thatâs it, even money canât stop those dirty mouths from babbling away! What would be of your future then? We canât possibly let that little b*tch ruin it for you, can we?â
Nell smiled as those words warmed the cockles of her heart.
âThanks, Jan. I know you care a lot about me but donât get ahead of yourself.â
âYou know nothing! Celineâs fans are enjoying their celebration but thereâs still no news coming from your side. How can I not be anxious?â
After a moment of consideration, Nell said, âActually, I donât have to become an actress. I prefer security to the unstable life of celebrities. You know that.â
âYou!â
Janet was too upset to say anything.
âWhy join acting if you donât like being an actress?â
Nell smiled.
âWell, I did it simply because someone else wants to do that! Havenât you heard? Walk ahead to destroy the path for others.â
â...â
Janet was speechless.
She suddenly realized that this friend of hers was not the same person that she used to know.
When did her friend become so evil?
She liked it!
Janet felt slightly relieved after hearing that.
However, she could not help to enquire with concern. âSo what are you planning to do? Do you need my help? Those people might not believe your explanation. Youâll be in deep trouble if Jason sides Celine too.
Iâm more experienced in this industry and I donât normally care for things like this so my words might be more reliable. I could be of help.â
Those words warmed Nellâs heart even more.
Her lips curled upward into a smile. âDonât worry. I can take care of this myself.â
âReally?â
âYup, really.â
The determination was audible in her voice. Janet finally felt reassured since she knew her friend would not lie.
After the conversation ended, Nell received a call from Thomas.
She smiled sarcastically.
âHello, Uncle Morton.â
âNelly? Sorry to disturb you at this hour. Were you about to go to sleep?â
She walked toward the window and gazed into the distant night sky with an indifferent expression on her face. âNot yet. Whatâs the matter?â
There was a hint of hesitance and embarrassment in his voice. âWell, Iâm sure youâve seen the rumors that went viral online?â
âYup.â
âThe Mortons are really sorry about that. I didnât expect Celine to say those things to the media. Jasonâs to be blamed for the things that went wrong between you two. I would like to apologize to you on his behalf.â
Nell laughed softly. âUncle Morton, youâve already done that one year ago and Iâve accepted your apology hence thereâs no need for that today.â
Thomas laughed drily with embarrassment.
âYes, yes! I know this rumor affects you greatly but donât worry, Iâll punish that insensible rascal and make him apologize to you personally...â
Nell interrupted the man. âUncle Morton, you donât have to beat around the bush you know.â
There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone.
The quiet was filled with an awkwardness of being exposed.
Anyway, being in the business industry for the past several years made him tougher in facing these situations.
âIâll be straightforward with you then.
I offered you three companies last time in exchange for your forgiveness. Youâre a person of your words and youâve done great in the past year even though both Jason and Celine have behaved poorly and offended you more than once. However, I hope youâll let them off this time. Iâll try my best to fulfill all of your demands.â
Nell smiled coldly. âSo Uncle Morton sees me as such a realistic gold-digger!â
Words caught in his throat.
He sighed.
âNot at all. I figure youâre a smart person who knows which decision would yield the best outcome for you.
When it comes to business, it would be better for both sides to make peace than to wear each other out. Nelly, itâs a shame that the Mortons have lost you as a daughter-in-law but please, Iâm asking you personally to reconsider this.â
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
Just when Thomas thought she was going to reject his plea, the woman whispered her reply, âDeal.â
He was taken aback.
Nell smirked. âI can do as you say but I want all 10% of Celineâs stock from Jennings Corporation.â
Thomas widened his eyes.
âUm... I canât take responsibility for Jennings Corporation.â
âThe Jennings would be overjoyed to be related to Mortons by marriage! They could only be too eager to please you. Besides, 10% of stock ownership for Celineâs reputation sounds like a good deal to me.
Donât you worry. As long as the stock has been transferred to under my name, I give you my word that Iâll never mention anything about our relationship nor ruin their marriage.â
Another long silence.
Nell stood there quietly as she patiently waited for a response.
Thomas finally broke the silence about half a minute later.
âOkay! Itâs a deal. Iâll bring this up with them but I canât guarantee success.â
The corners of Nellâs lips curled upward. âThen I shall thank you in advance.â
Nell turned around after ending the phone call, only to realize that Nancy was staring at her angrily from the couch.
She twitched her brows into a frown. âItâs getting late. Whyâre you still here instead of sleeping in your room?â
Nancy replied, her voice laced with unconcealed annoyance, âNelly, how can you demand that from him? Is there anything you want that Sir cannot get for you? Forget about 10% stock of Jennings Corporation, he could acquire the entire corporation for you in an instant if thatâs what you wanted!
Why inconvenient yourself to cover up for that coupleâs mistakes?â
A chuckle escaped Nellâs mouth.
She stepped forward to pinch Nancyâs cheeks playfully. âSilly, do you think Elder Sister Nelly is such an idiot? Celine cares a great deal about her reputation. Will I be that dumb to sacrifice myself for their happiness?â
Nancyâs eyes widened.
âThen why did you...â
Nell flashed a sarcastic smile.
âBecause some people have never experienced failure before. I want them to see what it feels like to have the things they care about the most being taken away from them little by little!â
