Chapter 242
Spoiled by the President
Sylvia sat there with her face clouded in gloominess. Her heart had been recovered from the shock that came with the news.
Concerned, Sally glanced around the room and wanted to say something but despite the urge, she could not muster up the courage to speak.
Due to her household status stemming from improper grounds, Sally had no say in the Jenningsâ household even if Sylvia accepted her, much less having a voice in a critical time like this.
Hence, she stared imploringly at Shaun, in hopes he would stand up and plead to say a few words on behalf of Celine.
However, Shaun had always feared Sylvia. Not to mention, Celine had the nerve to kidnap someone. This was against the law.
Fortunately, with Celine married out of the family, they were able to clear themselves from many of the matters. Who knew what mess the Jennings would end up with if they were to get themselves involved?
With that, he threw a reproaching glance at Celine.
Caught off guard by his attitude, Celine felt a lump in her throat. The pent-up fury within her threatened to burst out.
It was awhile before Sylvia opened her mouth.
âApart from the driver, is there any other clue linking to you?â
Celine shook her head.
âNo, Iâm certain. Iâve secretly taken care of the remaining four in the basement.
âIn fact, I gave a large sum to the driver after it was done so that heâll flee to a faraway place. I even personally took care of the vehicle. I didnât think that his car plate number was snapped.â
Sylvia nodded.
âItâs great that thereâs no other evidence. At the end of the day, only the driver is uncovered. Thereâs no proof pointing directly at you.
âIâll get your father to withdraw money for you later. Donât get yourself involved and just let Skylar handle it from here. Sheâll know what to do.â
Celine nodded in acknowledgment.
Sylviaâs words put Sally at ease.
Turning toward Celine, Sally asked with worry, âWhat about the voice recording shared online as well as the video of Kylieâs testimony? Iâm sure it has a huge effect on your career. Have you thought about what to do with them?â
Celine was boiling at that mention.
To think that she had it in the bag for Kylie to frame Nell, look at what happened now.
It was like a huge slap in the face.
Clenching her teeth, she cried out furiously, âHow dare that little b*tch betray me! I wonât let this slide!â
Shaun coldly scoffed. âHow do you intend to get back at her? For her to testify for Nell, surely Nell will offer her protection.
âNell isnât the one to be afraid of. Itâs Gideon who is behind her you should worry about. Do you want the Jennings to go up against Gideon?â
Celine choked at Shaunâs words. For a moment, she was at a loss.
Despite how influential Nell was in Jincheng, she could not fare with the Jennings.
However, this was the capitalâs most powerful in question.
Even the Mortons and Hancocks, let alone them, had to think twice before going head to head with the Leiths.
With Celine going mute, Sylvia impatiently waved her arm.
âAlright now. As a father, you sure are given to sarcasm.â
She then turned to Celine.
âYou should head back now. Iâll get your father to transfer the money to you. Remember to come clean with Young Master Morton. You two should have a talk if thereâs anything, donât bottle it up.â
Celine bobbed her head.
After she was gone, Sally let out a sigh of relief and got up to the kitchen to make preparations for dinner.
To her surprise, Sally had just straightened her back when she was called by Sylvia.
Sallyâs eyes were without the earlier softness and benevolence. Sylvia coldly uttered, âCome with me. I have something to tell you.â
Sally paused before finally nodding.
âYes.â
In Sylviaâs bedroom on the second floor.
Sylvia let loose of her body and sat on an amber rattan rocking chair as she gazed at Sally who was standing in the opposite.
âCeline got herself in a pretty huge mess. Others may not know Nell, but I know her very well.
âShe basically set Celine in for a trap and a slight mishap by Celineâs part could plunge her to eternal damnation.â
Hearing this, a worrisome furrow formed between Sallyâs brows.
âMom, have you come up with an idea?â
Sylvia nodded.
âDo you still remember the necklace Nell retrieved from me?â
Sally was taken aback. âI do, what about it?â
âItâs an important token left by her mother. Itâs a shame though, thatâs a fake.â
Sally widened her pupils in surprise.
Sylvia then took out a mahogany brocade box from a drawer beside her.
She opened the brocade box, revealing a quaint red jewel necklace wrapped in a burgundy silk.
âThis is...â
âIsnât it similar?â
Sally immediately nodded.
âCathy thought we didnât know that she had made a switch on the child. Itâs a pity though. How would I not know what a child of the Jennings family looks like?
âAlthough she was still an infant in a cradle at the time, that nose and those eyes werenât the least bit like our Shaun. Did she think I was blind?
âSince the child was kind of a big deal, it wonât go wrong if we bring her up. Sheâs just a little girl after all. Even if she really were to return to that family, the work of bringing her up isnât nothing in exchange for a lifetime of wealth.
âWho would have thought that Nell, that wr*tched kid was this ungrateful! Itâs a waste for all those years Iâve been kind to her. Thereâs really no need for me to dote on her when sheâs this insensible.â
While Sylvia mumbled to herself, Sally was rendered speechless from the shock.
She had an inkling about Nellâs birth, but it was only a broad outline, not definite details as such.
Here, Sally thought that the old lady was unaware of the matter, it never occurred to her that she had already known.
Not only was Sylvia aware but it was also all in her plan!
Sally turned pale in the face. Beads of sweat trickled down her forehead, sending chills to her spine.
Turning a blind eye to Sallyâs complexion, Sylvia continued. âWith Celine involved in this, if Gideon were to pursue this matter, we, the Jennings, wouldn't be able to save her.
âSo, her only choice is to replace Nell and become that personâs daughter. That way, she can clear her name and help our family get to the top, donât you say?â
Not knowing how to react, Sally paused before forcing a nod.
âYouâre right.â
âDo you understand what you should do now?â
âI...â
Hit with a realization, Sally widened her eyes in disbelief.
Stone cold in the face, Sylvia stared at her with shrewd eyes beaming of coercion.
Sally opened her mouth but no words escaped her lips.
In the end, she hung her head low.
âI do.â
