Chapter 250
Spoiled by the President
Shaun was annoyed by the bitterness in her tone. âSo what? Are we going to tell her the truth about five years ago?â
Sylvia answered, âThatâs what Nell said but Iâve pondered over it. Since sheâs fine, she canât go into hiding forever. Sheâs only bluffing us and probably doesnât know the entire truth.
âItâs not like she can do anything to us if we keep it together. As for Celine, Iâll have someone make some arrangements.
âSheâll have to bear with the inconvenience in the meantime but sheâs not a nobody, so it wonât be too much of an unpleasant stay. It shouldnât be a problem as long as sheâs able to withstand the pressure and refuse to confess at any cost.â
In total disbelief, Sally could not believe her ears.
âMom, youâre making an assumption! Thereâs still a possibility that she might crumble and confess. Celine has never faced any hardships. How could she possibly tolerate remaining in that place?â
Sylvia darted her an impatient stare.
âI said Iâll have someone make some arrangements. Sheâs the one who created this mess. Itâs great that she faces a little hardship now, maybe sheâll know better then. God knows if sheâll stir more trouble when she returns!â
She unhappily scoffed.
Sally was rendered speechless, unable to find the words to refute.
A while later, she probed. âDidnât you say, the capital side...â
Sylvia frowned.
âIâve already tried to make contact so I should hear back in a few days. Donât let Celine know about this yet. She might not be able to keep her mouth shut and mess it up.
âDonât worry. Celine will turn out all right once it goes to proper channels. We wonât entertain even if the Mortons come licking our boots to be our relatives.â
With her mind at rest to hear this, Sally nodded.
âOkay, I leave everything to you.â
...
On the other side, Nell had never thought that she would bump into the person, who, by right, should not be in Tranquil Dwelling.
She ran into Stephanie the moment the latter arrived at the hotel.
Stephanie wore a plain white shirt and straight pencil pants underneath. She looked rather refreshing and clean with her hair tied into a ponytail.
The sight of Nell caught her by surprise.
âMiss Jennings, what a coincidence. I didnât think I'd see you here.â
Nell smiled. âMiss Garrett, what a pleasant surprise as well.â
Struck by a thought, Stephanie blinked her eyes.
âIt has become quite the talk of the town outside about you going missing and abducted. I thought it was real but it seems...â
She did not finish the sentence but the intention could not have been more obvious.
Nell felt a migraine coming.
Such was life, offering a blow out of the blue.
She composed herself before letting out a poised grin.
âAre you here for Grandma?â
There was no point in hiding certain things now that it had been discovered.
However, she was not in the mood to explain herself to Stephanie.
Fortunately, Stephanie was a smart cookie. Without enquiring further, she smiled. âYes. I heard that Grandma Leith was here. I thought of looking for her but bumped into you instead.â
âGrandma is in the room. Shall I take you there?â
âItâs okay, Miss Jennings. Iâll ask at the reception. You seem to be heading out, I shouldnât take up too much of your time now.â
Saving the formalities, Nell nodded and turned to leave.
Gazing at her receding figure, Stephanie curled her lips with a glint in her eyes that was worth pondering.
It had never occurred to the old madam that Stephanie would come to the island at a time like this.
It had been a while since she bought the island and almost everyone in the family knew about it. Nevertheless, they were all too occupied to come over and if they did, they would surely inform her beforehand. Thus, she never paid too much attention.
Who would have thought a slight overlook proved fatal to Nellâs plans?
The old madam took the blame while Stephanie pretended it never happened.
Stephanie joyfully said upon their encounter, âGrandma Leith, I have a shoot nearby. I know youâre here so I came to see you while on the way. I hope you donât blame me for not telling you in advance.â
Old Madam Quinton tugged the edge of her mouth for a forced smile.
âOf course not. Iâm happy that youâre here. Why would I blame you?â
She may say so but her face said otherwise.
Feigning ignorance, Stephanie noticed Lizzy and affectionately took out a gift she had prepared to have fun with her.
Having woken up from a nap she took together with Great Nana, Lizzy recalled she made plans with Nell to teach her swimming.
She was caught in a moment of anxiousness when Nell was not in sight when she awoke. Hence, she did not have the same patience she usually had with Stephanie.
Lizzy accepted the gift and threw a casual thank you before putting on her shoes and running out.
Uneasy to let her go alone, the old madam chased after her.
âLizzy, where are you going?â
âIâm going to look for Mommy. Mommy promised to bring me swimming.â
The old madam pulled her back.
âBe good now. Your mommy went out to take care of business. Why donât you wait for her to return to teach you swimming?â
Lizzyâs eyes reddened in grievance.
âNo, Mommy promised me before my nap. She said Iâll be able to see her once I wake up. I can then go swimming with her in the sea. Mommy wonât lie to me!â
The old madam was dumbfounded in the face of the aggrieved child.
Nell did indeed give her word that she would bring Lizzy swimming once she awakened.
However, Lizzy had a light nap today and an abrupt visit by Stephanie had her up half an hour earlier.
Normally, she would get up after 2:30 p.m. Nell would be done with her business and be back by then.
For a moment, the old lady could not find the words to explain to Lizzy.
Stephanie kneeled over and looked at her gently.
âLizzy, Miss Jennings is busy now. How about I teach you to swim?â
Over the years, Gideon was without a female companion. Firstly, it was because he had no interest in women and secondly, the little kid was an eccentric character. She seemed to hate any woman who appeared beside him.
Nevertheless, Stephanie was the exception.
Although Lizzy was not the least bit enthusiastic, Stephanie was not treated or rejected like an enemy as she would to everyone else.
Hence, she always believed that in the kidâs mind, she should be different from the common run.
Besides, the old madam had once tried to pair Stephanie and Gideon up, allowing her and Lizzy plenty of time to foster a relationship.
All the more Stephanie was certain that she was Lizzyâs favorite.
To her surprise, Lizzy looked at her as though she resented her existence this time.
âI donât want to. You donât have a better figure than Mommy. You donât look like you have Mommyâs patience. Most importantly, youâre not as beautiful as Mommy! I donât want you to teach me. I want my Mommy!â
Stephanie, â...â
