Chapter 268

Spoiled by the President

Nell was shocked. She never gave it much thought, but merely presumed that having the opportunity to reunite with one’s biological family was a good thing.

After listening to Gideon’s opinion, she now felt that the Garrett family was a dangerous place to be and one should not simply set foot in it.

Moreover, successfully locating the child might not be a good thing.

Suddenly, she thought of Stephanie again.

She heard that Stephanie was treated as a replacement when that child went missing. The former was later adopted by Madam Garrett.

Over the years, the Garretts treated her like their own and nurtured her. If not for the Old Master’s illness, the family would not have thought of finding that child.

If the child was indeed discovered and brought back, what position would Stephanie be put in?

A person like Stephanie would surely have something to say about it.

As she contemplated, Nell heaved a sigh.

Gideon observed her constant contemplation and sighing.

He chuckled, patted her head and assured her, “Relax, if I have any clues, I’ll be sure to inform them. I just want to remind you not to have high hopes about this matter.

Anyway, the child has been missing for more than 20 years. Apart from the first two years where the Garrett family searched for her relentlessly, they hardly did anything during these ten years or so.

It wasn’t until the Old Master’s physical condition deteriorated that they resumed the search. I won’t go into the details as I’m positive that you are aware of them.

When the child returns to the Garrett family, it’ll be hard to say whether it’ll be a blessing or a curse to her.”

Nell nodded.

Naturally, she understood that the family had given up on locating the child years ago after the search yielded no results.

Now, the Old Master was seriously ill. When he reminisced about the past, he felt that he owed something to the child.

The family did not want him to die with an unfulfilled wish, so they decided to look for the child.

In other words, to them, the child was just a tool to appease the Old Master.

After all, the Old Master’s death would lead to numerous conflicts within the family over his inheritance.

Once the Old Master passed away, the tool would lose its purpose and one could only wonder how it would be taken care of by the family.

Nell felt melancholic as these thoughts flashed across her mind.

Gideon noticed how moody she was and realized this was not a good topic to discuss. Thus, he stopped and changed the subject.

The two of them chatted on the way home.

Aunt Joyce prepared a scrumptious lunch for them when she learned of their return.

After lunch, Gideon accompanied Nell at home instead of heading back to the company.

Lizzy was fine after going through her physical examination. In fact, she was better than before.

Overall, she was on the road to recovery.

Nell was at ease now.

At night, they received news from the police. They had found out what had occurred five years ago.

Although Sylvia had not pleaded guilty, Sally had already testified to what she did in the past after being grilled by the police.

The photos of the brake pads that Nell submitted earlier and the testimony of the mechanic helped a lot, too.

The truth was similar to Nell’s guess. Back then, Cathy discovered Shaun’s affair with Sally and found out they had an eighteen-year-old daughter as well.

Out of anger, she wanted to get the Morrisons’ shares back and demanded a divorce from Shaun.

However, Shaun Jennings, who came from humble beginnings and whose family depended upon the Morrisons, would not agree to this.

That same day, he soothed her fury by advising her patiently. Nell’s mother calmed down momentarily and Shaun promised that he would offer her a solution that would satisfy her. Nevertheless, he got someone to sabotage her car without her knowledge.

In order to secure her position as Mrs. Jennings, Sally drove a car late at night and used it to crash into Cathy’s car on the bridge.

The car crashed into the railing and tumbled into the river along with Cathy inside, killing her.

Nell listened to the police’s explanation quietly. She thought she would be mad, but she felt unexpectedly calm.

After all, it had been six years since that incident happened.

Prior to this, she had already learned about the truth, but she lacked the evidence to prove it.

Today, she understood that time would numb whatever pain and anguish she felt as a result of this matter. What was left were solemnity and melancholy.

As for the Jennings’ punishment, Nell did not give any comments on this. She let the police take care of them.

Gideon remained silent as well.

The sentencing was soon announced.

Shaun Jennings was guilty of murder and was sentenced to death and the same applied for Sally Youngs. Sylvia Walker was the mastermind but she did not carry out the murder. Plus, she was old, so she was given a life sentence. However, for someone her age, life imprisonment was no different from a death sentence.

Once this announcement was made public, Celine Jennings’ future was over.

Back then, she was relatively young and was not involved in the crime. At most, she kept mum about the plan, so she was not sentenced to jail.

Still, public opinion was powerful. She had murderers for parents and an evil grandmother.

Furthermore, what she did towards Nell earlier was enough to destroy her reputation forever!

Besides, she had to cooperate with the police to investigate the case of Nell’s abduction.

However, during the investigation, Celine insisted that she was also abducted.

Later, it was proven that what she said was true.

Actually, Nell was aware that Celine had been kidnapped, but she had no idea who did it.

For a while, the police did not have any leads on the case. In the end, it became an unsolved mystery.

Fortunately, no one was harmed, so the case had a positive outcome, at least.

After the imprisonment of Sylvia, Shaun and Sally, the Board of Directors made a decision regarding the inheritance of the Jennings Corporation.

They agreed that Nell should be the heiress.

Firstly, the Jennings started off as the Morrisons. Cathy Morrison was Nell’s biological mother, and logically speaking, Nell should be the successor.

With the incident surrounding Celine, she was no longer qualified to take over the company. Therefore, the only person qualified to do so was Nell.

Yet, Nell was not really interested in it. Although the Jennings Corporation used to be the Morrison Corporation, she was not really bothered with her late mother’s company and never managed it before.

Moreover, after undergoing multiple changes under Shaun’s leadership, the Jennings Corporation was a totally different entity from the Morrison Corporation.

Taking over the company would only add to her list of problems.

The Jennings’ stocks had plummeted as a result of all this hoo-ha. The company was no longer valuable and whoever inherited it would face a lot of trouble.

On a brighter note, the Mortons had invested a significant sum of money into the Jennings. Currently, Thomas is interested in buying the Jennings and Nell had no objections towards it.

After a formal discussion, they signed a contract with a reasonable price tag and managed to settle this issue once and for all.
