Chapter 287
Spoiled by the President
With that, Joel trod softly and ran over quietly with the lights dimmed, and the people paid no attention.
âBrother, sister-in-law, why are you guys here?â
âSo you can be here but we canât?â
Amused, Nell teased him.
Without taking the words to heart, Joel initiatively said, âTruth be told, our family is organizing the auction tonight. You can let me know which items you fancy later and Iâll notify them so no one will get in your way.â
Amid Nellâs surprise, Gideon glanced at him and said in a gruff voice, âWhy donât you just gift it to us since you have the power?â
Joel was stunned.
âThat... Brother, donât put me in a spot. Itâs not as though you donât know that our familyâs finances are in the hands of my father. Heâll kill me if I really do gift it.â
Nell chuckled at his antics. It was then a young man walked over from a corner of the hall.
âBrother, sister-in-law.â
The person, wearing a dark gray suit, had rather handsome facial features. With his smile, he brought a rather refined and warm presence to the room.
Having met him once, Nell knew that he was Gideonâs best friend. He seemed to be an outstandingly talented doctor and Owen Jackman was his name. She immediately got up to greet him.
Bewildered to run into them here, Owen asked out of curiosity, âSister-in-law, are you interested in jewelry?â
He was aware that Gideon had no interest in these.
Nell grinned. âNo, I just came to take a look.â
Owen nodded without pursuing the matter further.
Since they were here, Joel did not go to the front and, might as well, arranged for a change of seats. He also pulled Owen over to sit at the back with Gideon and Nell.
âBrother, let me tell you. There are a few great items tonight and would really suit you, sister-in-law. Iâll let you know when theyâre out later. You should take a good look.â
Nell quickly stopped him.
âWait, donât instigate your brother. Weâre only here for a look and donât have any thoughts about buying anything.â
Joel gave a sneaky smile.
âSister-in-law, donât be shy. Women shouldnât scrimp and save on themselves. Even if you donât spend the money, someone will spend it for you.
Furthermore, brother has a lot of money, you wonât...â
Before he could finish, Joel received a noogie in the head.
Joel grunted in pain as he held his head before turning to Gideon with an aggrieved look on his face.
âBrother, why did you hit me out of the blue?â
With a sullen face, Gideon coldly blurted, âAre you going to shut your mouth? Will you believe that Iâll toss you out of here if you donât keep quiet?â
Joel immediately gestured a mouth-zipping motion to indicate that he would not speak anymore.
Then, Gideon held Nell's hand and muttered, âDonât listen to his nonsense. My money is your money. It has nothing to do with other women.â
Nell could not help but smile.
Joel murmured in his head, calling Gideon uxorious. Still, he held his tongue and waited obediently for the auction to begin.
Soon, the event started with everyone present.
Nell could still recall the set of red coral jewelry that Gideon had gifted her. In fact, she felt that the set was perfect for the old madam. She was young and rarely came across an event for this sort of jewelry.
It was different for the old madam. Those long in the tooth tended to like things in red and green for their festivity and auspiciousness.
However, the set was given to her by Gideon. It was not right to regift it to someone else. Nell could only hope that she would be able to find a similar jewelry piece that would make the trip tonight worthwhile.
Knowing Nellâs thoughts like the back of his hand, Gideon whispered in her ear, âThe jewelry actually comes with a matching set. Itâs in emerald but the set is with my aunt. I guess sheâs going to give it to grandma for her big seventieth.â
Dumbfounded, Nell frowned.
âShould we switch to something else? I donât know if itâs good if we all gave her jewelry.â
Gideon shook his head.
âYou know old folks, they just want to be happy. Itâs a token of our regard, so thereâs really no need to fuss over it.â
Nell nodded.
Since Owen sat right beside them, he heard their conversation.
He leaned in and muttered, âI drew a painting of the Southern Mountain that signifies longevity for the old madamâs birthday. Itâs at my house. Itâs nothing valuable but a gift from the heart. Brother, please come take a look if you have the time and point out if thereâs anything improper. I can make changes.â
Not only was Owen medically skilled, but he was also a great painter, especially proficient in landscapes. It was said that he had inherited part of Old Master Jackmanâs bearing.
Gideon bobbed his head.
âGrandma has always taken a liking to you. Sheâd love anything you draw. You donât have to go through too much trouble.â
Owen smiled faintly.
Yet Joel was not having it.
âIf I have a say, Grandma Leith is biased. Why is she happy as if sheâs welcoming her grandson when Owen goes over and calls me a Cheeky Monkey instead?
âAlso, also, the old madam was beside her with joy when Owen gave her a can of tea leaves last year. I managed to get my hands on a jade pillow from abroad but she merely took a glimpse at it. It really hurt me.â
Owen answered softly, âIt came from my heart. Your jade pillow does nothing other than it is nice to look at.â
âBut itâs expensive! I spent a lot on it.â
âMy tea leaves arenât cheap either.â
âIs your can of tea leaves more expensive than my jade pillow?â
âEven if it isnât as expensive as your jade pillow, the sincerity is more present than your jade pillow.â
âSigh, no, Old Owen, youâre just out to get me today!â
â...â
With the duo at each otherâs throats, Nell cut them off.
âWait, the jade pillow that youâre talking about, is it the phoenix-patterned jade pillow of the Han Dynasty that was uncovered a few years ago?â
Joel was delighted that she recognized the jade pillow. Thus, he replied, âYes, yes, yes, thatâs the one. Sister-in-law, youâre really knowledgeable to know what it is.â
Nell grinned awkwardly.
âNo, I was just curious for a moment. How senseless can a person be to gift something a dead person had slept with as a birthday gift? Isnât that like putting a hex on someone?â
Joel was speechless Owen and Gideon burst out laughing.
Hitting the roof, Joel argued through clenched teeth, âHow could it be something a dead person slept with? The way youâre putting it, those antiques canât be used then?â
Nell curled her lips to a feigned smile.
âCalm down, I didnât say that. Itâs because itâs a burial article so it might be a little inauspicious if you think about it. It was buried and then dug out to give as a present, donât you think itâs...â
âEnough!â
Joel was on the verge of tears. âI finally realized. You three are ganging up on me today. Hmph! Iâm not going to reason with you. You wonât understand even if I try!â
