Chapter 289
Spoiled by the President
He would raise the sign to bid as long as Lucy demonstrated an inkling of fondness.
Yard Corporation was into the property and building material trade, and as the nationâs leading enterprise in this respect, they had accumulated a financial abundance.
As the only son to Chairman Yard, Trent was, of course, not short of funds.
He spent money like water when it came to courting girls, throwing money about just to get a smile.
Yet, he came across Joel today.
On every piece of item that Trent had his eye on, Joel would go all out in bidding him up.
Trent kept his cool in the beginning but soon realized the price skyrocketed at an unbelievable rate.
It was as though those numbers did not represent money.
Sure, Trent had money but it was not to be spent this way.
A bangle, valued at a mere five hundred thousand, was raised by Joel to thirty million.
If he did not know that he was Joel Foster, a famously rich good-for-nothing of a hothead, Trent would probably suspect that Joel was trying to extort him.
Able to sense something amiss, Lucy turned back and glanced at Joel with a lofty look on his face. She glared at him before rotating her head back to urge Trent.
âYoung Master Yard, forget it. Just let Young Master Foster have it if he likes it that much! Letâs see what else the auction has.â
However, she was oblivious to the fact that men were prone to flaunting their superiority, especially in the face of their beloved women.
In this particular instance, Trent somehow felt that Joel was picking a fight with him because of Lucy who was sitting beside him.
After all, although they were not seated together, Trent and Lucy sat right in front of Joel and his group. The scorching gaze from behind could not be ignored.
With his patience tried, Trent did not listen to Lucyâs words and put in a bid.
To quit at a time like this was equivalent to admitting defeat.
Any man would not give up if there was still a competing chance.
In their eyes, Trent and Joel were not after a bangle but the pride of a man.
Yet to his surprise, Joel immediately threw in the towel after he raised the bid once more.
Trent was in a daze.
Were they not competing?
Young Master Foster stopped at thirty-five million. What was going on?
Shocked, he turned back to look but Joel was smirking back at him, mouthing a word rather exaggeratedly.
Idiot!
Trent was speechless.
The color drained from Lucyâs face as she also noticed Joel mouthing the word.
Even an idiot could tell that Joel was playing him a fool!
She whispered to Trent, âYoung Master Yard, this bangle is too expensive. Heâs bidding you up. Letâs just leave it.â
Trent forced a smile.
âItâs okay. Didnât you like it? Money canât buy love. Itâs just a small sum of money, donât take it to heart.â
He may have suffered a loss but he was not going to let it show.
These tens of millions were nothing compared to losing face.
Lucy bit her lip.
With her beautiful brows tied in a knot, she hesitated before saying, âIâm an old acquaintance of Young Master Foster. He must have misunderstood our relationship, thatâs why heâs taking an aim at you. Why donât I head over there and explain it to him?â
It was not her wish for conflict and animosity between Joel and Trent because of her.
Trent turned and took a glance at her.
His handsome face lit up with a faint smile.
âAll the more you shouldnât do that. Iâm happy to have the chance for others to take our relationship wrongly. Why should I let you explain it to him?â
Lucy was stunned.
Trent grinned. âItâs a joke. Please donât mind that.â
Lucy let out a forced smile, albeit still frustrated over Joelâs action.
Trent gently patted the back of her hand.
âDonât take it to heart. The point is to be happy since weâre out having fun. At the worst, I wonât bid if he bids me up again.â
Letting out a sigh, Lucy nodded.
Over at the other side, Nell watched the entire event unfold. She smiled. âIs that jealousy I smell coming from Young Master Foster? I can smell it from way over hereâ
Stiffening his face, Joel answered in ill humor, âNonsense. Iâm not jealous. Who is she anyway? I donât know her, why would I be jealous?â
âTsk, if you donât know her, then who was the one who eagerly rescued her and cleared the air for her? Who was the one bidding up when he saw another man being attentive to her? If this is not jealousy, where is the air of envy coming from?â
Joel was embarrassed by her words.
Gritting her teeth, he remained quiet for a while before rasping, âSister-in-law, you sure have quite the imagination. I was only adding profit for our auction. What does it have to do with jealousy?
âMoreover, I only helped out because sheâs an artist under you. Aside from the fact that youâre ungrateful to me, you have also ridiculed me. What kind of sister-in-law are you?â
The angry yet restraining look on Joelâs face had Nell splitting her sides.
âYes, now that youâve brought it up, Iâm really grateful to you. Iâll pry into her relationship with Young Master Yard after the auction ends later and Iâll let you know what I find.â
Spoiled by the President ï¤Chapter 288 Fighting For Her Favor Joel was speechless.
At the side, Owen was amused.
Nevertheless, compared to Joelâs unorthodox character, he was more mature.
âIf I remember correctly, there was an adjutant with the last name, Katz, who lived in the same compound where we grew up in? He has a daughter who hung out with Joel.â
Interested in the gossip, Nell leaned in to listen.
Joel saw red and turned to glare at Owen. He threatened him, âDonât you tell!â
Owen smiled. âItâs no secret. Brother knows it too. Even if you donât talk about it now, brother will tell her when theyâre back.â
After a pause, he added. âFurthermore, didnât you say you donât like her? Why do you look guilty?â
Owen was rendered speechless.
Gideon chimed in leisurely, âYes, I remember there was an adjutant. I think the daughterâs name is Lucy Katz? Nonetheless, our family was the first to move out of the compound so my memory could be blurry but if I remember correctly, the Fosters were the last to move out. Officer Katz worked under Grandpa Foster at that time so itâs not unusual for Joel to have had a great relationship with her.â
The Leiths, Grahams, Garretts, and Fosters were named the Four Great Clans not just because they were at the helm of wealth and power, but it was also due to their existence as four rivaling pillars in China.
Their ancestors were founding ministers and every single one of them did a distinguished service to the country.
In other words, the ancestors of the Four Great Clans were in the military. Subsequently influenced by their forefathers, the later generations saw many elites working in the army.
The families only began their venture into business in the last two generations.
