Chapter 322
Spoiled by the President
Harrisonâs sonorous and clear voice was heard moments of entering the room.
There were many people seated in the living room. Among them were not only the Garrett family but those who came to offer their best wishes for the return of Harrisonâs daughter.
It was a norm to muddy the waters in the capital. However, a slight rustle of the wind could easily blow any news up.
Nell and Gideon came later and by the time they arrived, the Grahams and Fosters were already there.
With a face of reluctance, Joel was pulled over to sit with his father, Xavier Foster.
His eyes lit up at the sight of Nell and Gideon walking in from outside.
âBrother, sister-in-law, youâre here.â
Gideon walked over hand-in-hand with Nell.
The housekeeper to the Garretts was an old man named Collins. He had been attending to guests in the living room and overlooked keeping an eye on the entrance.
With Gideon approaching, he immediately advanced forth and smiled apologetically. âIâm sorry. I didnât know Young Master Leith had graced us with your presence. Please accept my apologies for not welcoming you at the door.â
Gideon grinned and faintly replied, âMr. Collins, donât worry about it. The Leiths and Garretts are old friends. I used to come by a lot when I was younger, so Iâm not some outsider.â
At the side, someone immediately joked. âYes, come to think about it, a prenatal betrothal was set up between Young Master Leith and Miss Garrett.
They both wouldâve been a couple by now if it werenât for that incident, so really, thereâs no need...â
Before the person could finish, the living room fell into dead silence.
The person who spoke was a fair lady of one of the families.
Sensing the sudden quietness in the room, the woman first was in a daze but quickly realized what had happened. As color drained from her face, she covered her mouth.
Beside her, her husband darted a vicious glare at her.
Soon, he came up to offer apologies with a smile.
âIâm really sorry, Young Master Leith and Mrs. Leith. It was a slip of the tongue, an unintended mistake. She didnât mean it that way.â
Nell grinned.
âItâs fine, Chairman James. Mrs. James was only telling the truth and really, thereâs nothing to hide. Moreover, Gideon and I are married, so of course, we wonât fuss over this.â
With Chairman Jamesâ mind at rest, he offered a few words of flattering pleasantries.
Old Master Garrett was pushing eighty this year and had not been in the best of health due to a condition inflicted during the war when he was young.
At present, he was sitting on the sofa, gazing at the young couple who had come in. It took a while before he chimed in.
âDeon and wife are here. Come, let me take a look.â
Gideon pulled Nell to walk over.
Despite the similarity in age, Old Master Garrett looked rather hoary compared to Old Master Leith and Old Madam Quinton.
He lifted his head to look at the young pair. His weather-beaten face revealed a gratifying smile.
âGood, great. Itâs been a while since Deon was here. How are you?â
Gideon answered, âAll is good, thanks to you.â
âThatâs great.
The old man patted his hand and sighed with emotion. âYour grandfather and grandmother came the last time but I got into a row with your grandfather. Heâs given me the cold shoulder the past two days. You should help me reason with him and tell him to stop being so stubborn!â
Gideon smiled.
âOkay.â
Old Master Leith and Old Master Garrett were great friends who once went through thick and thin together.
The pair were a bit childish in terms of temperament. Although they were in their late seventies and early eighties, the duo often was caught in squabbles.
Sitting on the other corner, Joseph curled his lips at Gideon and said, âOh Deon, since youâre here, why donât you and your wife stay for a meal? Itâll be lively with everyone around today.â
Without refusing, Gideon nodded. âYou spoke my mind.â
As everyone engaged in conversation, a burst of joyous laughter was heard from the staircase.
âOh, everyoneâs here already? Young Master Leith and his wife are here too!â
Gideon bobbed his head in reply. âSecond Aunt.â
It was Josephâs wife, Harriet Brockman, coming down the stairs.
Born into a scholarly family, Harrietâs parents were well-known virtuosos who gained national recognition. A child with such a background should be of a mild and refined disposition but Harriet was a foolhardy hothead.
Although Nell was unfamiliar with Harriet, her extended stay in the capital did make her aware of the latter.
Harriet may be a hothead but she had a good heart.
She was close with Old Madam Quinton too. Harriet grinned. âWhy are you all standing there for? Come, take a seat. Dinner will begin soon. We must have a festive reunion dinner tonight.â
Jim Garrett was the oldest among the Garrettsâ younger generation. He asked, âWhereâs Celine? Why isnât she down here yet?â
Harriet retorted cheerfully, âThe girlâs a little tired from entertaining guests all afternoon. Sheâs taking a rest in her room. Iâll call her down when itâs time for dinner.â
Jim nodded.
Soon, it was dinner.
Harriet sent someone to call Celine down. It was Nellâs first time seeing her again after so many months.
Celine wore a white cashmere fitted sweater paired with a cashmere skirt at the bottom, revealing a pair of slender and straight legs under. Her chestnut-colored hair was perfectly done up and permed into wavy ringlets. She looked rather innocent and adorable. Compared to several months Spoiled by the President ï¤Chapter 321 Lost Pearl ago, Celine was no longer the same person during the downfall of the Jennings family.
Celine took step by step down the marble stair with the support of a maid and came before everyone. Lowering her head, she greeted all smiles.
âIâm so sorry, I was too tired in the afternoon and slept until now. Itâs very remiss of me.â
Everyone immediately exchanged words of pleasantries while Celine returned with a smile. In the end, her gaze fell on Nell.
Nell quietly stared back at her.
Celine paused and rather than acting evasive as expected, she came on forthright with a smile instead. âSister, youâre here as well.â
Nell raised a brow in surprise.
It was different than she had imagined.
She thought that Celine would feel guilty at her presence but this was not the fact of the matter.
Nevertheless, since Celine was showing no fear, all the more Nell had nothing to be afraid of.
Nell replied with a graceful smile. âSo, we meet again after so long. I see that youâve been well.â
Celine looked delighted. There was not an ounce of resentment or hatred toward Nell on her face, only sincerity.
âThanks to you, I may not live a luxurious life like before but itâs been a quiet and easy life. Iâve done you wrong in the past but itâs water under the bridge. I hope that you donât take past grudges to heart.â
Nell let out a smile.
âOh, sister, you sure love to joke. The past is in the past and the present is what matters now. You were my fatherâs illegitimate daughter and now youâre the lost precious of the Garrett family. Following the change of identity, all past grudges should disappear altogether.â
The hustle and bustle in the living room came to an abrupt halt.
