Chapter 327
Spoiled by the President
Just then, Mama Lindbloom approached with a box in hand.
âOld Madam, I found it.â
With a smile, she handed the box to the old madam. Nell took a glance and noticed the dark brown sandalwood box was carved in intricate patterns.
She could tell it was top quality at first glance.
The old madam opened the box which revealed amber silk. Sitting on top of the silk was a quaint sapphire necklace.
At the twitch of her eyelid, Nellâs face lost color.
This was because the design of this necklace was too familiar. It looked like...
The old madam took out the necklace and lamented. âThis was from long ago. I was in my youth when your grandfather happened to get this from an antique dealer. We hadnât known each other for very long then yet he gave this necklace to me as our engagement present.
âNelly, youâre a good child. I donât have anything to give you but this necklace. I hope that you and Deon can be like us, to have a harmonious, beautiful, and peaceful lifetime together.â
With a frown on her face, Nell showed no joy. In fact, she was lost in her thoughts.
Noticing she was out of it, the old madam was surprised and shouted, âNelly.â
Nell snapped back to reality.
She was in a trance before forcing a smile. âGrandma, what did you say?â
The old madam frowned.
She did not continue the earlier topic as she was concerned about her instead. âAre you all right? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?â
Nell shook her head.
She pursed her lips and hesitated for a moment before replying, âIâm okay. I just remembered something when I saw this necklace.
The old madam was taken by surprise.
âOh? Youâve seen it before?â
By right, this was impossible. After all, this necklace was given by the old master to her decades ago and she kept it under lock and key ever since.
There was no way outsiders had seen it.
Yet, Nell bobbed her head.
She reached out and unfastened the necklace worn around her neck.
âGrandma, take a look at this.â
The necklace in Nellâs hand was quaint and had a similar design to the one old madam had taken out. Only, the sapphire was replaced by a ruby.
The old madam was in shock.
It was not just her but Mama Lindbloom who was beside looking on was dumbstruck as well.
âWhat-whatâs going on...â
Mama Lindbloomâs speech almost turned incoherent. This necklace was a treasure handed down from the previous dynasty. It was one of its kind.
How could there be another exact match?
Nell was unaware of the necklaceâs origin but by the looks of their reaction, she knew the situation was not as simple.
Having returned to her senses after awhile, the old madam turned sullen and asked, âWhere did your necklace come from?â
Without hiding, Nell told her about her motherâs passing and leaving behind the possession.
The old madam was still perplexed at the end of the story.
She frowned for a moment before extending her arm. âCan you let me have a closer look at the necklace?â
Nell nodded.
The old madam carefully examined the necklace once it was in her hands. She looked relieved.
âThis necklace is a fake. Although the workmanship is exquisite and it seems primitive and extravagant, youâll find many aspects that are new at a closer inspection. Itâs definitely not from the previous dynasty. It does look to be forged in recent years.â
Nell was surprised.
By right, this item was left behind by her mother should not be a copy because she had seen her mother wear it before and the latter had specifically left this possession in Nellâs care prior to passing on.
However, with the old madam reaffirming over and over again, Nell let the matter rest since she did not have a better explanation.
After she had exited the old madamâs room, Nell took Lizzy and followed Gideon home.
Ever since she found out there was a little brother in the house, Lizzy had been excited, pestering to play with him.
Nell informed Aunt Joyce and Karen to keep an eye on them and not stay up too late before heading upstairs.
Back in the bedroom, she took a shower and placed the two necklaces in a row. She sat on the bed and fell deep into her thoughts.
It was not known when Gideon had come back. He saw her sitting there, a hand propped under her chin, looking rather puzzled with her brows raised.
âWhat are you looking at?â
He walked over and sat opposite her.
Nell pushed the two jewelry boxes toward him and said, âLook at the two necklaces.â
Astonished, Gideon lifted his brows.
It came as no surprise because he knew her mother left it behind for her.
Nevertheless, the other necklace beside belonged to the old madam. Old Madam Quinton treasured this necklace and rarely took it out. Gideon, as a man, rarely paid attention to jewelry so he had never really seen this necklace before.
He gazed at the two necklaces placed side by side and gave it a thought before asking, âThis is given to you by Grandma?â
Nell nodded.
âGrandma said that this was left behind by the royal family from the previous dynasty. Granddad happened to come across it and gave it to her as an engagement gift. She just gifted this necklace to me but didnât think I already had one, which was the one passed down to me by my mother. Yet, Grandma said this one is a copy.â
She then picked up the ruby necklace.
Gideon took it for a closer look.
Previously, he was rarely concerned with womenâs jewelry. Hence, he never paid close attention.
This time, the result of his examination observed that the condition of this necklace was fairly recent. It was not credible that Cathy had worn it for decades, let alone from the previous dynasty.
He frowned.
Vexed, Nell sighed.
âMy mom wouldnât lie to me. Thereâs one thing I canât wrap my head around. Whatâs the reason behind her leaving me this necklace? Do you think that this necklace has something to do with your grandmaâs necklace?â
Gideon threw a glance at her.
The gaze was obscure yet pensive at the same time.
Nell was in the daze by that look, unable to get his intention.
Moments later, Gideon put down the necklace and replied, âI remember that this thing was in the care of Old Madam Jennings. Perhaps sheâs in the know.â
Nell was gobsmacked but her complexion soon turned glum.
âForget it, even if she knows, she wonât tell me.â
Gideon made no response to her reply.
He remained quiet for a while before putting away the two necklaces for her. Gideon faintly answered, âDonât dwell on it if thatâs the case. Itâs only a necklace and doesnât change anything. Just think of it as a coincidence.â
Nell contemplated and felt the same way. Thus, she left him to tidy up.
After a moment of composure, she went downstairs to check on Lizzy and Sunny. Nell settled the two little ones down back in their rooms for sleep before retreating to her room to rest.
