Chapter 362

Spoiled by the President

Nell returned to the shoot the next day.

She had recently accepted a role in a historical drama, revolving around martial arts chivalry. It was not all the rage at present but Nell took a liking after reading the script. She said yes even though it was only a minor role.

Today just happened to be a fighting scene between her and a supporting actor.

For the sake of realism on the set, the director did not choose to shoot indoors and photoshop the background later on. Instead, he opted to shoot on an actual site.

The site selected by the crew was on a famous mountain in the suburbs.

This mountain was well known for a national famous Taoist temple. It had a beautiful scenery on the mountain with its lush greens. It was a great feeling, in body and mind, standing on top of the mountain on a bright sunny day.

Prior to the shoot, the crew had cleared the site in advance and set up the cameras. Nell had a change of wardrobe and walked over to get into the harness.

This scene was set on one of the cliffs.

The supporting role Nell played was a singsong girl who made a living as a performer in a pleasure house but in truth, she was an assassin from a neighboring country.

For the survival of her motherland, she had assassinated the crown prince.

Discovering her identity, the male supporting actor hunted her down to a cliff.

Here, the second supporting actress and supporting actor dueled to death. In the end, the heavily-wounded actress succumbed to the pursuit of the actor and his men, and fell off the cliff to her death.

This character’s role was set to be rather aloof and taciturn. It fitted Nell’s disposition just right.

With the harness put on and positions ready, the director cried, “Action!”

Nell’s eyes turned cold.

With a hand over the wound on her chest and lips tainted in a blood trail, she held her sword and retreated to the edge of the cliff.

The male role, played by Zachary Lewis, said in a gruff voice, “You have no way to run. Just give it up!”

Nell slowly curled her lips.

That smile was distant yet decisive.

“No, I still have one way out!”

With that, she let go of the hand from her chest and held the hilt, erecting the sword.

Color drained from the complexions of the pursuing men.

With a sullen face, Zachary rasped. “You work your fingers to the bone for your motherland in hopes of wealth and honor. You’ve reached the end of the road. I’ve begged the minister to spare your life so why do you still put up resistance?”

Nell scoffed.

The indifferent and exquisite face was unmoved.

“There’s no fear for death when it’s laying down my life for my motherland!”

Holding the sword, she pranced toward Zachary.

The swing of the harness signified the start of a battle.

Under the guidance of a martial arts guru, Nell had already gone through the moves with Zachary beforehand. Hence, the duo was able to interchange maneuvers in a rather fascinating and beautiful way.

At the end of the scene, Zachary would slam a fist on Nell’s left shoulder, prompting her to spew blood and fall off the cliff.

Of course, she was not going to fall off the cliff. The camera would see her disappear under the cliff when in fact, she would be hanging on the harness. She would be pulled back up after the shoot of this scene ended.

However, something went wrong!

Nell had made preparation to fall back from the cliff as a response to the force of the actor’s palm.

Nevertheless, her feet had just left the ground when she heard a snap.

Before she could react to it, Nell felt that her center of gravity had shifted. The left rope of the harness had snapped in half.

Nell turned pale out of fright.

Nonetheless, this was not the most terrifying bit. The scariest part was when she lifted her head, she saw the rope on the right strained to its last stretch and was about to snap.

She immediately grabbed a hold of the rope and that was when the right rope broke.

Nell depended on her two hands to catch hold of the rope. Like a kite, she was dangling mid-air.

At this time, the crew had realized something was amiss.

“What’s going on? Why isn’t she up yet?’

Pale in the face, those from the props team rushed over and exclaimed, “Director, it’s not looking good. There’s something wrong with the machine and the harness can’t be pulled back up.”

The director looked as though he had seen a ghost.

“What?”

He got up and bolted toward the harness pulley. “What happened? Why is there a problem?”

The coworker in charge of the harness replied, “I don’t know. It was alright this morning but somehow, it’s stuck.”

The director was Wendell Hughes. He sought Nell for the role because he saw the character in her and secondly, she was highly recommended by Gareth.

Hence, he was aware of Nell’s identity and background.

Presently, his heart sank as the props team tried to gain control of the pulley system but the machine just would not budge.

The crew had been shooting for long yet had never encountered such a problem. Why did it break out of the blue today?

There was no time for Wendell to dwell on this. Dashing to the edge of the cliff, Wendell looked down and shouted, “Nell, how are you feeling there?”

Meanwhile, Nell was already at her limit holding onto the rope with two arms.

Still, she clenched her teeth and spoke, “I’m okay but the rope over my waist is broken. I’m holding on with my hands. How’s the situation up there?”

Having found out that the rope had snapped, the director’s complexion saw a change of color. His heart sank deeper to the core.

“It’s all right. There’s something wrong with the machine. Hold on tight, I’ll send someone down to rescue you.”

With that, the director rushed to get someone to take out the reserved lifeline.

Nell was at the end of her tether at this point.

The rope of the harness was made of smooth steel wire and her hands sustained her entire weight. As she was holding tightly to the rope, the steel wire had cut into her flesh, sending excruciating pain to her palms. She wanted to give up.

However, she gnashed her teeth and held it together. Even if blood was dripping down from her hands and her arms were trembling from the pain, she clenched her teeth and refused to let go of the two steel wires.

Beneath her was a bottomless cliff.

If she let go and fell from here, she could guarantee that she would be smashed into pieces without a single body part intact.

After a long wait, a lifeline was finally let down.

Nevertheless, Nell no longer had the energy to grab it. Several seconds later, a staff member climbed down the lifeline.

“Nell, hang on. I’m coming to rescue you.”

He took another rope and tied it around Nell’s waist.

Just then, a rumble broke out on the horizon, inviting the sounds of thunder.

In less than a second, heavy raindrops came crashing down.

Nell was completely worn out. With trembling arms, she let the person hang a rope over her harness before letting go of the steel wires. She suspended in the air alongside the person.

The person yelled at her amid the rain, “Hold on, we’ll be right up.”

For some reason, she could not take a clear look at the person’s facial features.

The staff member was experienced in mountain climbing.

Two minutes later, she was brought back to the ground surface.
