Chapter 379
Spoiled by the President
He then got up to walk out.
Taken aback, Lucy quickly snapped out of it and became upset. She stopped him. âWhat are you trying to do?â
Old Fourth Cecil smirked at her. âI said it, Iâm going to look for my son-in-law to ask for betrothal gifts to spend. This isnât asking for too much!â
Lucy could feel her chest bursting with rage.
âHave you no shame? I have nothing to do with him! We went out for a few meals together as an investor and main lead. Even if he likes me, weâre not together. What gives you the right to ask money from him?â
Old Fourth Cecil sneered. âI donât care about that. Thatâs your problem.â
âYou!â
Lucyâs heart was pounding from anger. She knew that her adoptive father was shameless but had never thought that he would go as far as this.
Over the years, she may appear free and easy but only she knew the troubles brewing within.
Ever since her father passed away ten years ago, her life became a living hell and had not gotten better since.
After awhile, she took a deep breath. With reddened eyes, she said, âI really donât have the money now. If you really have the need, you can wait until Iâm done with this drama. This is the only way, otherwise, we go down together. You can do whatever you want, thereâs nothing more I can do about it...â
Although Old Fourth Cecil was not happy about it, he was aware that there was no better choice.
Thus, he unwillingly replied, âFine. When will your drama be over?â
âEnd of the month!â
âFine, Iâll wait until the end of the month. Donât go back on your word or else... Humph, you know.â
With a lump in her throat, Lucy was at a loss of words for a moment.
Weary, she kneaded her furrow and answered, âGo now. Iâll let you know when the moneyâs in.â
Old Fourth Cecil finally left in contentment.
...
After Old Fourth Cecil was gone, Lucy sat in the room, immersed in an air of silence.
About a quarter of an hour later, she sighed and picked up her phone to dial a number.
The line was swiftly connected after a couple of rings.
Lucy cautiously enquired, âSister Susan, about that... Can I ask you for a favor?â
On the other end, Susanâs voice was the usual aloof. âWhatâs up?â
âI... I want an advance for my pay, is it possible?â
Susan frowned.
She paused and replied, âI donât have a say in this. Is there a pressing need?â
Biting her lip, Lucy hummed in acknowledgment.
âHow about this? Iâll help you ask around. The pay is only given after the shoot is completed. If it can be paid upfront, Iâll have them deposit the advance payment.â
Susan had adopted the entire âbusiness is businessâ tone but even so, Lucy was extremely grateful.
She immediately answered, âOkay, thank you, Sister Susan.â
âSure.â
After hanging up, Lucy held her hand to her beating heart and finally found a sense of relief. She then headed to her dorm.
Meanwhile, on the other side.
Following the call with Lucy, Susan informed the matter to Hannah.
Hannah was surprised by the news.
However, she did not think too much in detail as perhaps Lucy might have an urgent need.
Nevertheless, the main sponsor of this drama was Anning International. Xinghui was only a subsidiary unit so it was out of her hands.
Nell was presently not managing Anning International and with this matter involving the business, Hannah did not go through Nell and submitted a request directly to Anning.
The result of the request was out the next day.
The answer given from them was that it could not be done. The company never had a precedent so she was out of luck.
Lucy was disappointed.
However, she knew that Susan had spared her feelings by helping her to ask alone. Although Lucy was disheartened, she still expressed her gratitude.
She returned to the set, heavy-hearted the entire afternoon.
Lucy rarely had bloopers but because she was not herself today, the director repeatedly called for cuts.
With the number of cuts growing abundant, the people around began to murmur in a discussion.
The director watched her and felt rather helpless too.
He came out from behind the monitor and asked, âWhatâs wrong with you today? Is there something on your mind? You canât seem to get into the mood.â
With her head hung low, Lucy bit her lip.
A brief moment later, she gnashed her teeth and replied, âDirector, letâs try one more time. I want to give it another go.â
The director frowned at her.
He might be obtuse but he too, could tell that Lucyâs mind was elsewhere. In the condition she was in, despite her best efforts, the shoot would not go on well.
In the end, he waved his arm and solemnly answered, âItâs fine. I can tell youâre tired. You should take some rest. Take care of whatever matters you need first. Your scenes today will be shot tomorrow.â
He then turned to the log keeper beside and instructed, âCall Suzy over. Letâs do her scenes today.â
âAlright, Iâll call her now.â
The director returned to take a seat behind the monitor while the log keeper went to summon Suzy. Soon, the set was redone to accommodate Suzyâs scenes.
Lucy stood there, biting her bottom lip. Her heart was ridden by guilt.
She knew that she had messed up today. Tried as she may get into character, she just could not do it.
As Suzy proudly strutted over in her costume, Lucy helplessly retreated to one side.
Seeing that Lucy was absent-minded, the director gave a piece of advice with a frown. âYou canât ride two horses at the same time. If somethingâs bothering you, you should take care of that first. The shoot canât be rushed in a day or two. You can continue your scenes after youâve taken care of your business.â
Lucy nodded. âGot it. Thank you, director.â
She left the set and returned to the hotel booked by the film crew. Lucy took a shower and lay in bed to stare blankly at her phone.
Her mind was a daze. She did not know who to look for at a time like this.
It was not as though she had not thought about asking Nell for help. She knew that this amount of money was nothing to Nell.
Nevertheless, Lucy had her pride. Moreover, she had a great understanding of the situation she was in. Old Fourth Cecil was a bottomless pit that could not be fulfilled. It was bad enough for her alone, why should she drag a friend down together?
She would not ask that from a friend unless out of absolute necessity.
While she was deep in contemplation, her phone suddenly rang.
Dumbstruck, she picked up the phone and noticed it was from Joel.
It was a bit of a surprise.
Why would this person, who had never remained in contact in a million years, call her at a time like this?
Not in the mood to accept the call, she terminated the line. For sure, he was calling her for some flippant matter.
On the other end, Joel sat on an executive chair with his legs crossed, waiting for the woman to pick up the call. To his dismay, the call was rejected!

This d*mn woman! How dare she hang up on him!
He, Joel Foster, was the recipient of flattery and bootlicking everywhere he went yet she gave him the attitude every time.
What show of temper was this! Stinking and stubborn!
He gnashed his teeth. A while later, he sent her a text message.
âHow dare you refuse my call? Are you that sick of living?â
Lucy coldly smirked when she saw the text message.
She replied one word, âHa!â
Joel could envision the woman on the other end looking wilful and contemptuous.
He gritted his teeth in anger.
Staring at his phone, Joel scoffed.
âFine, get on your high horse! Youâll fall into my hands sooner or later!â
